As for what I've heard you run around in the same city all the time, from A to B, and those points change depending on what mission you've taken.
That sounds great but from what I know and believe...It's like HL2 in that you progress through the story, level after level but have some choice in where you jump, climb etc...

Perhaps I'm wrong but I've watched vids and I swear I heard them say that somewhere.

Quite interesting to read and watch. I myself don't really have projects but like most people I started a few mini mods and failed.

Something I was proud of was my ghost which flew towards you and went through the wall. If you don't mind here's the vid:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FH4OJsUKYdA

I also started a HL2 SP mod to really show off my abilities however I was way over the top and had planned 15 + maps all with a nice plot and concept art.

It was too much for me and I ended up making the first two levels before stopping. Maybe I'll go back to it someday but the first map was that apartment map I pasted into the WIP forum and the second map was an area of East Mesa from HL2 that you didn't see. I had it so you walked up to a fence and saw Freeman and Mossman enter the lift...

In the end you would go to the top of the Citadel just below Breen when he was trying to escape and you would help Freeman resulting in your death and Gman walking away smiling.

Still it was fun to make and once I get this modelling down I think I'll go back to it and work on the details. It's my best work to be honest apart from my old school remake.

That's my project stuff anyway...Right now I'm just learning 3ds Max for my second year at uni.

in Metal-like texture Post #252703
Well lets see. Depending on the metal style you may want to use a normal map which adds bumps to the texture without actually deforming it and adding poly's.

You can easily google tutorials but there was a tool or a plug-in for Photoshop which made exporting real easy and it made you the normal maps etc.

You may also want to use what I think is called an Alpha Map to add a reflective shine to it.

Oh and in the VMT you need to write what material it is aka metal and it will sound, shoot like metal. Check a Valve VMT to get the correct wording.

Hope that helps.

in Episode 3 Concept Art Post #252563
Me thinks it's pretty obvious. Clearly the Borealis has been captured by the Combine and that's when Judith spotted it stuck in-between the ice glaciars...It looks like they have converted it into a base or power source...perhaps they'll use the portal technology to call for reinforcements after you closed the Citadel portal.
I'm kinda expecting to see that one boss thing they didn't include in Half Life 2 because it didn't fit with the game or something. You know, that weird thing that there's a picture of it stabbing a combine with a blue tentacle thing. That's about all we see.
As pointed out, Hydra and it'll most likely never return as it sucks. Owns too much. Try fighting one in the countless mods.

Oh dear. Well we all learn sometime.

First you need to know what graphics card you use. Typically Nvidia or ATI and go on their website. If your driver's are outdated then Steam warns you so did you see any messages like that when launching EP2?

in 6-D : A Half-Life Puzzle Mod [WIP] Post #250675
Very interesting.

While writing my games document for my first coursework I had to use a few books as references and one of the books I used is called:

Theoretical Topic II ? Nine Trade-Offs of Game Design by Francois Dominic Laram?e ? Game Design Perspectives: pg. 116

I'll paste in what I wrote at the top:

The theory about the ?Nine Trade-Offs of game Design? by Francois Dominic Laram?e discusses the nine sets of conflicting goals that a game designer has to decide due to tight deadlines or budget limits. He discusses the idea that ?each of us, deep inside, harbours a personal conception of the ?Ultimate Game,? a perfect product capable of satisfying the needs of every player until the end of time.?

These are the titles he discussed:

?Balance versus Enjoyment?
?Realism versus Understandability?
?Structure versus Freedom?
?Mood versus Playability?
?Completeness versus Manageability?
?Innovation versus Familiarity?
?Scope versus Concision?
?Violence versus Isolation?
?Breadth versus Depth versus Pace?

I found it interesting cause the points he makes do open your eyes as to the decisions that have to be made when designing a game...

A lot of work!

Muzz again has it right. They are used to seal off the map as displacements don't seal from leaks.

Although when I read your question I thought you meant literally blocks covered in nodraw in the middle of nowhere...

This is the third game and the guy talking in French looks kinda like Joey from Friends. I hope you can figure that out.

in MY NEW MOD: KLEINERS ADVENTURE!!@11 Post #249265
Pretty good. Well it needs a lot of work. I really think you did a good job on the hands and you seem to know your entities from watching the vid...

However. Your level design is seriously lacking. I mean a large room just for a keycard? You have to compare your levels to real life sometimes because when I saw that I woke up from your world and found it hard to go back.

It's good that you have that untouched way of mapping. But you need to change the way you map and it will probably change your ideas for the future. So maybe you should work on your mapping skills before making a real mod!
Was that James Bond music in the video?
