When you make an env_cubemap do you go to properties and click 'choose sides' and then you select what walls you want the env_cubemap to work on and click apply so that it shows little yellow lines on the hammer editor screen?
I have no idea why it crashes when you buildcubemaps as it works fine for me.

It works on both sides even if you do not put a glass texture on the other side and you can see it in my ladder example which contains a working func_breakable_surf

I have had experience with HL2 for a while now and i can just about grasp the setup of entities!
Whatever you do, do not use freewebs as a host for your site!
Take a look at my profile for pictures of a city map me and this guy are working on if you want to see my work!
All i can say is good luck and some ideas:
There is a HL2 mod called HL2 Substance which is HL2 with some guns reskinned and the civies follow you everywhere!
The mod contained reskinned combine in camo (green) and looked good and the guns were edited so you could see more of the hand!

No i can see what you mean but they were defitnately birds because of the way they moved and they were not chunky!

I noticed when playing HL2 Substance i saw hundreds of birds in the distance flying in flocks but on closer inspection i saw that they were black dots that moved around in the air.

Use citizen models on combine!
You use an entity called env_global and choose in properties Gordon is pre criminal.
Did you save it as .map or you could use .vmx file to open on hammer!
Lol you really don't know much Avison but it's what hammer needs or basically there is no point in mapping without it!
