Hopefully, I'll get a couple 2-3 updates before the end :P.

This HEV/headless Gordon is life size--as you can see by the cycler and suit model--, but I'd like to the final about 1 1/2 times bigger, to allow for some better small detail.

:) It's what makes it challenging/fun.

I've seen your work srry, and I don't think this compo would be too hard for you... at least give a try before giving up ;)
Anyone have any friendly tips to get started?
Dude, you're one of the better bruswork guys here, you should be giving US tips :) The "Twisted Column" project was much more difficult imo.

I'm starting mine right now, hopefully post screens later today :)

The Detail-A-Hallway results should be up soon. Who'all enterend besides Srry anyhow?--which was a superb entry for those who have not seen it.

THANKS, YOU BITCH! :P

2 days, 3 hours... left in compo 3, so feel free to discuss and choose the next one.

Like Rotor said, if any of you won't be mapping for this compo, volunteer to judge for it! The only stipulation is that the results must be posted within a day of the end of the compo, and should be sooner if possible.

Good Luck to all the Statue makers!

Rowleybob give us some more time okay?
I see no reason to extend the time limit on mini#2. These are mini compos, and I even think 5 days is too much, let alone 10 days!!! Besides, you still have 2 days left which is more than enough ;)
Post your ideas after compo 2 is over.
These compos are designed to last 3-5 days, with one starting immediately after another finishes. It's ludicrous to say that we can't talk about new ideas until the current one is finished.
put the statue IN the detailed room
Um, no.

Captain P: I'm requesting that you not reset the timer, and we'll prepare to start the next one in about two days, which will be the statue competition, unless somebody thinks of something better.

Judges: In the future, I ask that you judge your entries within the same day that the compo ends. Even if there were 10 entries, I don't see how it could take longer than an hour to rate them all--and I don't see these little compos getting that popular anyway.

RotatorSplint: A couple possiblities:

1.Maybe you could choose a judge by proxy--one of the mods would probably do it free of charge :)

2. Buy HL1! :)

3. If you can't find a judge, I'll judge them.

If Rimrook's willing to take time out of his busy schedule to compete, you can bet it's being accepted ;)

Would you be willing to judge the compo if it's chosen?

Captain P: Night or twilight would probably be the best way, since n00b#2's and mine are both night maps anyway. Or lol, make it sunset, with WCD's "in the light", and the other two sections overshadowed by his big buildings :)

If there is a way I could modify my map to make it easier for you to combine, let me know.

Also, I forgot to thank you for hosting a good/fun compo, and doing the work for the brief page and the countdown timer. This was a lot of fun, and maybe we can do a modified version of it again, as BrushoPolis 2! :)

I found a way to cut the polies in half.
lol, tell now! :)

Random impressions fromp playing the new demo:

(Please excuse some of thes questins/comments If they've already beend addressed, since I haven't been consistently keeping up with this thread)

I love the new animations and new weapons...really great. However, I notice the lighting on them looks superb in light areas, and completely black in many others. Is there anyway to make certain parts of the weapon glow, even when your in dark areas? (more probably, the only way to fix this would to make the lighting more even/brighter)

Tracer bullets work great in some rooms, like the Gargy room, but totally don't in others. Is this because of the lighting or something?

I don't like how you have to jump to go through the small, white secret cooridors. If fact, playing the demo last time, I never knew you could walk through them! [/iamtard]

I like the dreary, dark--emo lol :)--theme of the map, but it wears after a while, though I have no idea what areas you could brighten, and have them still fit.

Maybe instead, Start the game off in a very brigtly lit space ship, and then you beam down, or crash, or get sucked in somehow to the turnstile world ala metroid :)

Add more user controled doodads like that retractable bridge at the end...that pwnned all :) Maybe some metroid-like "chargers" that when you step on them, they move somehow, like from Zero Mission. Of course, you could add the ol' rimrook creativity to the process, so people wouldn't think you were copying.

Great work, keep it up!

Yay! ^_^

I was truly impressed by the level of detail in WCD and n00b#2's entries...It seems we're all on the same page about what we like to do--fancy/detailed brushwork :)

I'm glad I didn't have to judge, because I truly felt all the entries were of very high quality.

2 days, 20 hours left in mini compo #2. Unfortunately, I will not have time to enter, but hopefully I will for #3. Speaking of which, feel free to brainstorm for the next compo, and we'll select the next idea/judge by popular opinion.

Random Mini Compo Idea #73:
Build a residential pool/pool area.
-The only custom content aloud is custom sky.
-Map wil be judged on general impression and realism
-Extra points for brushwork acrobatics
-Time limit: 3 days

Concerning Mini Compo ideas, I ask everyone at least consider some very unofficial guidelines:

1. Whatever idea you have, hopefully it will focus on fancy/difficult brushwork to some extent. That is, let's challege ourselves building things with world solids, that in true practices would be better off being models :)

2. Structure: Restrictions for this kind of compo are key. They give you a framework to more quickly prototype/implement an idea. I mean, these are "mini" compos after all. If you can't think of a good restriction for you compo, limiting the maximum size of whatever it is, is always a good start.

3. Term. A short term also forces us to limit what we're able to do, and acts as a great restriction. 5 days seems a nice maximum limit, but I encourage everyone to consider even shorter terms.

I think Agent Smith said it best:
I'd like to share a revelation that I've had during my time here. It came to me when I tried to classify your species. I've realized that you are not actually mammals.

Every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with the surrounding environment. But you humans do not. You move to an area and you multiply and multiply until every natural resource is consumed and the only way you can survive is to spread to another area.

There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus.

I still think it would be much more interesting with a simple base map... but I'll go with the grain :)

This is pretty much the same as The-Site-That-Must-Not-Be-Named compo, started by You-Know-Who :P
Err... you mean like the compotition they had on [strike]snarkpit?[/strike] I want something new. Hence I don't like the detailed room/corridor. Unless if the corridor/room's outlay is already made. I can make the base map, this time it will be a really basic one, and I mean it. This way you'll have lots of freedom with it.
I also really hate to say it, but I agree 100%

in Reverse Cordon: A Good Idea? Post #190402
You could use a little hack: place large brushes over the parts of your map you don't want compiled.
A simple solution to a complex problem...I like it! Thanks CP :) I might just use it.
(also, if you have more information about the VIS paramaters, please let me know)
mapname.rad works fine anyway
It works for you if you cordon compile in expert? Are you sure it's not reading the original lights.rad in the tools folder?

Anyway, I just cut out the part of the map I'll be working on for the next week or so, and when it's finished, I'll paste it into the map and "cut" another part out. Cordon would be much more convenient though, So I'm gonna try the stuff Seventh suggested tonight to try to get it working.

prepare the combi-map.
SWEET! I didn't think you were still going to do that! :)
And I'll happily prepare a next compo page, with timer, image and rules 'n stuff.
PWN! :)

Mini Compo #2!...WEWT! The rules seem sort of vague, but I'll take a look at the basemap, and see if it clears it up for me.

edit: I have to agree with srry, and VOX. I think it would be much better just detailing a hallway and perhaps additionaly a very small room.

Still, I'll play with the basemap more, and see if my point of view changes on this.
