From what i understand, you run it to a .vmf or .map before a compile.
And I also think that Atom's Compilator has an option to use HLFIX

Any NPC has an 'on death' trigger and math_counters are way more flexible than multisources.
There's really nothing to figure out after that.

You can always tie a trigger to the birds that make them fly away if you get too close ;) Just to make it more difficult

Compile Tools: Zoners 3.4 64bit - LINK if you're interested.

Screenshots:
Here's a screenshot of an error relating to the player start - seemingly unrelated to the door not having a master.

Here's an error displayed in game after trying to activate the door by touch, and then backing off.

Link to Map: Please Click here (VMF) Right-Click, saveas, else it'll open as a text file.

Steps to re-create:
  • Create two rooms with connecting hallways
  • - I made a block, hollowed it, cloned it, created a connecting hallway.
  • Create a player start and a point light in each room
  • Create a brush sealing off both rooms
  • - Tied said brush to func_door, made it move vertical, lip of 2.
  • Compiled

Compiling through sledge.. func_doors.... master is null or not a master.
Doors don't work. wat?
Func_walls not showing up...
Lights placed within ~64 units of eachother not rendering..
Something's afoot.
more details....
Using the compilator instead of sledge to compile.
Using halflife.fgd located here: http://themightyatom.nl/downloads.html

I have a simple func_door, set to have a lip of 2 with no master set (field is blank).
When i compile and play, the door does not open and the game returns "master is null or not a master"
HOWEVER
If i tick the "use only" flag, the door opens when i play the game yet NO FUNC_WALLS RENDER!?

This is quite odd.
Tested map with hammer 3.4
Created new door, exported to .map, compiled with compilator - works fine.

Something to look into PB

didn't know we had to keep existing geometry but could cut into it
See that's where it's fuzzy.
The Brief doesn't say you can add geometry to the area.
It doesn't say you CAN'T add geometry either.
It just says you can't change what's there...

Funny how hard it is to do something this simple. >:[
That's my favorite part about working with goldsource - using the restrictive tools to do something simple. Definitely shaped my brain to be a good troubleshooter / engineer.
In Crowbar of Time, all I used a multisource triggering a multimanager.
I wanted to implement a coin counter, but I had no way of displaying it on on a HUD.
If one wants to display a count, you can have a central display showing how many enemies remain, and have the same number of multisources as there are enemies to be found....
Each multisource will have the same name, but a different trigger number (from 1-number of enemies) to toggle visibility of the "enemies remaining" counter. The final multisource triggers a multimanager to do the outro sequence.

Simple in theory, complicated and tedious in execution.

@ Ghost, don't be afraid to lose :) We're not going to make fun of you for not making something incredible. This is a chance to flex your brain muscle. All the limits imposed in these competitions are exercises for creativity. Give it your best shot and you might win. I can GUARANTEE that you'll lose if you don't submit an entry. Start with picking a theme for the walls, texture everything in a certain area, and make trims and details by clipping existing brushwork.

@ Urby
There is a lot of evidence that... shudder... carving was used.
I've been replacing the existing geometry to suit my needs. The wall size, location, etc hasn't been changed, but I've been reorganizing as i go. The first thing i noted that drove me crazy was the little guard booth on the bottom floor near one of the doors. The floor is split into 4 sections and the walls are just crazy nuts. So I replaced that whole floor with one 5-sided brush and it satisfied the OCD section of my brain.

I'd like to thank Archie for 2 things: 1) an awesome topic. 2) My 2 failing grades for my summer classes thanks to his top 5 :)

(In no particular order)

1) RoadKill
What you get when 2 master car mechanics have a free weekend and some spending money. It's every American muscle-car guy's wet-dream: Having the money and the skills to do whatever you want to cars.
For instance: throwing a dart at a map, flying to that location, buying a shitty car, and making it back home... for $1,500

2) 8 bit theater
I read these strips religiously in high-school and while I can't say I've kept up on them, they're good for crude humor and they're a breeze to read.
The strips follow the adventures of the 4 main characters from Final Fantasy 1 and each of them is about as useless as the next. Except for white mage - who the male characters lust over and fruitless try to court.

3) Misfile
A well written, intelligent manga of a boy who got turned into a girl because of an angel's mistake - misfiling the boy's papers in the female drawer in heaven. He wakes up one day as a girl, having lived his entire life as a boy. By the way, he has a wicked crush on his next door neighbor, his dad is a gynecologist, and he's an amateur race car driver/mechanic.
Once he get's over the fact he has boobs, some real-life, intelligent, plot developments come about. A fantastic read.

4) Mighty Car Mods
Two Aussies try to trick out their cars for as cheap as possible. These guys just did what any novice tinkers do - buy crappy parts to make their crappy cars less crappy. But they're hilarious - eventually got sponsored, became the most popular Aussie car mod show, and they've released a industry respected electronic soundtrack for one of their movies.
If you don't watch the series, at least check out their movie: Kei to the City where they fly to japan, buy a cheap car, and take it drifting with a band of rag-tag wrenchers.

5) Gone with the Blastwave
A lost-gem i recently stumbled upon. It covers the mindless banter and antics of a group of forgotten soldiers battling a war for who knows which reason. They're also lost and can't find their way out of the city. They try to entertain themselves by finding hilarious ways to kill their enemies - and seeing who's bullet can stay in the air longer. Extremely well drawn (for a web comic), entertaining, and hilarious at times. One of my favorite comics.

I second the Zebra Pencil! It's a very solid feel, but light enough to manipulate easily. Zebra also has a SUPER nice gel pen variant of the same body style. It was my favorite pen until I found the Uniball Jetstream.
I'd also recommend those sketchpad block erasers. My Eraser of choice has been a STAEDTLER rasoplast. It's great for notebook or printer paper, however I've never used it on a legit sketchpad so who knows.

Being in production meetings a lot really makes you appreciate nice pens.

I wouldn't consider OP4 to be an expansion so much as it's own game?
But it is a fantastic piece of work nonetheless.
I have to agree with Archie on the Conquerors add-on for AOEII. The Mayans in that game are my favorite race next to the Celts. But only because of the addition of race-specific buffs.
The Brood War release of the original Starcraft is awesome. Another epic campaign with the addition of well balanced units and another boom on battle.net. It was a great game.
I liked portal's version of Peggle too. It was a very nice addition to my steam library.

I'm mapping at work to map on my break/lunches. I'm making soccer arenas for a source mod. The rotate gizmo has saved me hours of fine tweaking already.
Once I have the basics laid out in Sledge, I plan to import the map into 3DSMax to make models of railings and some of the more detailed bits.
After that, send it to Source and re-texture it. It runs flawlessly on my work machine which is sub-par by my standards.
