Um. What. I just built my brand new HTPC tonight, using XBMCbuntu :P
I used an Antec ISK case and a Core i3 CPU (which has the Sandy Bridge GPU). All up, cost me $450 including an SSD boot drive. I'm running mine on external hard drives, though, not a NAS. I was thinking about posting a journal about it tomorrow, now you've stolen my thunder :o

Couldn't recommend XBMCbuntu more, it's a fantastic piece of software.

@kdunivan: Workstation graphics cards are for serious 3DSMax and AutoCAD stuff, I can bet there's no way you need one. They're actually pretty rubbish for games and I would suggest you buy a mid-to-high end gaming card instead. For editing video, the best thing you can get is a nice multi-core CPU. The more cores, the better. Again, don't bother looking at the server CPUs like Xeons because they are specialised to certain purposes and are pretty rubbish at other tasks.

Seriously though esmajor, if you don't want to build the PC yourself, I suggest you check a website like newegg which sells full PCs as well as the individual parts. You'll probably find a better deal there. (I'm not in the US so I can't guarantee that though.)

I think it does ban by IP as well, but most people have dynamic IPs that change fairly often so that's probably why.

Anyway, I'm glad that he'll be back to normal once the tempban wears off. We never like banning anybody who is a genuine contributor to the community.

But there's two excellent reasons that you DO have a dire need for a new mouse, right there!

And please, before anyone starts quoting Notch: the guy made ONE game with very primitive graphics in Java, he is by no means qualified to comment on the matter. Look up Carmack's comments if you want an opinion that actually matters.

One way you could battle the no-gifters next year, by having everyone just make generic gifts and then assign them to others at the very end?
This is probably a good idea. You lose the ability to personalise the gift, but at the same time, it means that everybody who participates will not be disappointed.

Yes. Choose whatever game type you want as long as it works properly on an unmodified copy of the game.

EDIT: Also, the answer was already in the competition rules, I suggest you read them!
You have complete freedom as far as the layout, gameplay, etc. goes, including changing the map type: as_, cs_, de_, es_, fy_, etc. are all allowed.

You're free to test your map however and with whoever you want. I even think Daubster was trying to organise with potatis to get an official competition entry testing server up for CS1.6, not sure how that's working out. Unfortunately (correct me if I'm wrong) we have no way of hosting CZ or CS:S games.

We want to focus on gameplay for this compo - using an existing layout offers no new gameplay opportunities at all. Imagine if de_dust2 was never made, but instead it was simply remakes of dust1 using the same layout. That would be pretty boring.

So: Choose a map from CS with a distinct theme (not dust please), but create a new map from that theme, just like how dust2 is a whole different layout to dust1. Your layout design skills are just as important (if not more!) as your detailing skills - we want to see you use both in this competition!

Hotdog: I'm not sure about that. Technically it's not legal to distribute content from any retail game without permission from the publisher of the game - Valve included. I think I'll let Daubster have the final say on this one (again).

You've got it backwards, ninja. The rules are to take a theme from an existing CS map and create a completely new map with a completely new layout based on that same theme.

You should NOT be taking an existing layout from a CS map and giving it a new theme.

@Zeeba: Dust should definitely not be used because it's been milked to DEATH. We're looking for some of the less common themes to be used, so you can probably discount Aztec, as well - but I'll let Daubster make the call on whether the Aztec theme is okay or not.

Sorry kiddo, but I've never seen somebody on the internet that would kill sombody for not liking some game or even anybody where a game the most important thing in their lives (discounting addiction and other mental instabilities, I guess). Stop thinking of the most extreme situation possible and then pretending it's common place.

Maybe you don't get excited about anything because you're an emo or something, but regular people get excited about things they like and are looking forward to. It doesn't mean that they're stupid, irrational, or elitist.

Basically, shut up.

That said, the conspiracy theories linked in this thread ARE pretty ridiculous :P

Decompiling is fine if you want to see entity setups, but be careful because technically it's not considered legal or acceptable in the community to steal brushwork from official maps. Just be careful what you use from decompiled sources.

Yeah but the carbon tax in Australia is a terrible example because it's just another load of politics bullshit that they can use in their childish games. They aren't actually thinking about the environment when they introduce a carbon tax. Both Aussie parties are full of complete morons, dinosaurs that have no idea how to work in the modern world. Until they all die and sensible people get into the top positions, you'll never have a sensible decision come out of the government.

http://store.steampowered.com/news/6562/
Updates to Source SDK have been released. The updates will be applied automatically when your Steam client is restarted. The major changes include:
 • This update addresses all know issues introduced over the past week including:
 • Crash when opening the VGUI model browser in Hammer
 • Hammer lockups
 • Black textures in Hammer, HLMV, and Faceposer
 • Added a new Engine Version called ‘Source Engine MP’ which is the proper one to select if working with Team Fortress 2, Counter-Strike:Source, or Day of Defeat: Source. Users should select ‘Reset Game Configurations’ in the SDK Launcher so that these games become properly associated with the new engine version.
 • Tools binaries for Portal, Half-Life 2 and its episodes are now located in a directory called ‘sourcesdk/bin/source2009/bin’. Users may need to update shortcuts they’ve created for vtex.exe, studiomdl.exe, etc. in order to ensure they are using the proper versions of these tools. The binaries used for modifying Team Fortress 2, Counter-Strike:Source, or Day of Defeat: Source remain in the ‘sourcesdk/bin/orangebox/bin’.
