in Map ideas for twhl dm server Post #274739
Alright, while I put my room map on hold I began mapping my lost_tech_2. Usually when I make a map I do it one area/room at a time and it takes me forever as I don't know what will come next. With this map I drew out the entire floor plan and now im mapping out a basic version of it to get all of my scaleage right. I've never mapped so fast before, the entire map is pretty much already mapped out and I only started a few hours ago!

As for my room, this is where I left off.

That would be weird but no it doesn't.

@psilous, its kinda hard to make a map look over grown and left behind without grass or tree models.

It crashes my hammer too.

I've found that a monster_generic works the best for me for now... And when set to not solid it doesnt even bleed!

Well this worked but when I put a monster_fruniture on an irregular ground the little yellow dots come floating around it as if I put a monster half way in the ground.

You put an env_sprite into your map and in the sprite name field you put a model's name. I used to do this and the reason for using it instead of a cycler is that it makes the model illusionary and you can't shoot it to have black junk shoot out of the model. For example I have a grass model but when I use it with a cycler in my map I cant walk through the grass but if it was used as a sprite the player could walk straight through it. And I wan't the player to be able to walk through my bush models as well. Really though this used to work but it crashes my hammer now. Does it work for anyone else? Isn't there like an fgd. that allows it to work or something?

Alright now for some reason when I take an env_sprite and enter a model name into the sprite name field my hammer crashes. I used to be able to do this so how come I can't any more? Do I need a different version of hammer? I have 3.4 but im pretty sure I used to do it with the same version. And I don't want to have to enter something into the compile because I don't do custom compile I just want it to work in hammer.

So that I can use the tree models. The blue/black part wouldn't dissapear when compiled without the correct dlls.

Awesome thanks guys. Sorry for reposting but this was an old forum and I didn't like the title. It seems I already had the dlls in my halflife folder but for some reason they didn't work and by replacing them with the new ones it did. Well now I can get back to work on my map!

I need the halflife dlls that allow models to be maskable. Can someone host theres somewhere for me? I really want to see tree models the way there supposed to be. You could even upload them as a map and I will download them and than you can delete it.

Yea well im learning its not even worth it anyways. The half life team maps in such a weird way and there maps are all fulllll of bugs and invalid_solid_structures. And when they make a map they drag every outer surface shape of the maps outward to form a giant cube. Its really strange but I guess it saves space. Ive learned a lot of cool things so far. I should have done this a long long time ago.

I've tryed before but it didn't look the same. And im trying right now but maybe someone else can tell exactly what they used. Right now im messing with some x and z beams and x smoke with high texture scroll rate and around 15 noise. All I need is the jet part, the rest is simple. It may also have something to do with the plasma sprite.

Thanks luke, yea im extremely proud of it! Just wate until I make cups for it and glaze it!

Back when my twin and I were younger and took ceramics in high school we wanted to make a teapot that was strange enough that someone would use it for shroom tea. My brother made one that wasn't very functional and ever since I wanted to make one in the back of my mind. I'd never actually do shrooms it just was the inspiration.

When making teapots if the person making it will put the extra work into it to make the lid not fall off when tilted I believe it adds value to it. Always worrying that my lids will fall off I was inspired to design one that couldn't even if tilted upside down or shaken. This bad boy will hold your tea!

Thanks, Its the lid. Notice that its off and on the floor in the second pic. The whole thing allows the lid to be slid into the top of the teapot and the clip holds it on. Also notice how im pushing it back to pull the clip up in the second pic. This releases the lid and makes it slide out into your hand. The rubberband won't be there as soon as I replace it with wire.

Alright I finally finished and fired my soft slab teapot "on the top". The lid slides in and clicks into place and is held by a little clip. The rubber band is only supposed to go to the hook on the front of it but it doesn't work like that so I am going to have to make it wire instead.

The second teapot is one I finished today. I just have to wate for it to dry and sand it so that the lid will fit into it snuggly. Im going to glaze it orange with some green speckle like a pumpkin. Its for my mom for christmas.

in Halloween Decorations Post #274758
Well our partys tommorow and I finally found my camera charger so ill take some pictures of our decorations when im out there and post them. We built an entire graveyard "we cut the tombstones out of wood, painted them, got gothic letter stencils and sprayed darker grey through them for the lettering, attached pipe holders to the backs of them, put them all in a field and shined a green spot light at them." Last year we built the paper mache devil that will be under the bridge when you first pull up. We learned to tie a 13 knot noose and built a dummy with a head we bought and are gonna hang it under the bridge. Were building a goblin dummy with a mask we have and are gonna put it off in the woods with a fake fire by it. Halloween lights and christmas lights are everywhere. And tons more. Its really neet out there. My cousin's band is gonna play out there at the cabin btw and were bbqing hotdogs and hamburgers. Very unfortunately a few days ago I got a major soar throat but luckily after gargling non stop and 11 hours of sleep last night I feel better even though I don't sound better. And im dressing up as freddy krueger :pirate:

Edit: Well our party was freaking awesome, wish yall coulda been there. There must have been fifty people there at one point. Everyone was gone, we had five coolers full of beer and punch. I'll post some pics from the party when I get around to it. When I was jamming to the band for some reason I repeatedly punched a tree trunk that supported my cabin so my hands all jacked up and some how I have a huge slit on my thumb. I laughed, I cried, I fought my older brother, yea it was awesome!

Thats a good little idea, I might use it in the woods. Also I just learned how to tie a noose knot and were going to hang a bunch of them in the trees. And well use one for the hanging dummy under the bridge. And for 25 bucks we bought a torn off girl's head with scary buldging out eyes that well use for the head of it. Its gonna be very scary! Ill take lots of picks!

I meant decorated like one. We are building a little cemetary with tombstones we made out of wood. And we decorated all inside and outside it with cool lighting and stuff. Were gonna have green trashcan punch and craploads of beer. Right when you first go under the bridge to get to our land were making a dummy hang from it by a noose and the evil will be under the bridge in the dark staring at you.

Rimrook, whats it take to qualify?

Mapping skills and understanding is all, I really believe.

Not just "an appoint of authority"

Do not you and I qualify to judge maps being that we both map a lot and have a great understanding of what makes a good or bad map?

Why not message say Kasperg and Captain p to judge them? They both have an understanding of gold and source mapping and have proven it.

Seriously why haven't they been judged yet?

If the judges are too busy why don't they just appoint someone else to judge? Usually when someone can't do their job someone else does...

Anything and everything is progress. So did anyone check out chicco's bedroom by zemeck in the vault? Its very cool and inspirational. He used a very large scale. I've put countless hours into my map so far making my guitar and everything. I have a lot more to go though like the closets, custom textures, lighting, and more. I am going to do something really cool with my tv as well but it will be a surprise.

Just something to think about. Think about the gameplay of the map. Make it flowable where the player can pretty much get around the entire map without having to climb ladders. Stack books, lean things against tall things that the player can run up. Make things reachable in jumping distance. Add "water". Put a glass of water, a beer bottle, anything the player can swim in. Think about what would be cool to go into if you were small. Maybe the paintball gun you have in your closet. Put it on the floor and map it so that you can walk through the barrel and into the hopper. Map your hamster cage so that you can go into it. Map your fish tank! "I did :D " and make the fish swim around. Use neat ways of movement. In one of the counterstrike rats maps a sponge acts as a bounce. A toy gun can become a turret. Make your lights and fan controllable. Let the player be able to change the channel on the tv.

Most of all add ambience. This really brings life to the map. Make the closet sound like a cave with blue and green lighting. Make the attick floor boards squeek. Make your clocks tick, your computer hum. Just make an awesome map for the server so it will bring in more players!
