Aliens heading towards us

Near Pluto

Is this a hoax?

I don't know what to believe. Since I am almost certain that extraterrestrial life exists, I am a bit afraid. Though they may have peaceful thoughts...
On the other side, I think this is will be some kind of an international hoax, or just an internet one. SETI has been working to discover these things for years, and yet only now they discover this in OUR SOLAR SYSTEM. Seriously, we find about these ships only now?
A possible explanation is that those are just meteorites. A human's brain likes to be fooled.

Anyway, I looked at them with 3D glasses and the tree one doesn't seem to have a good 3D effect indeed.

I can't put all of my reading effort into following every Dimbark's post, but.. did he just say he wants to implement multiplayer on half-life 1 mod?

There is no need for wasting words here Dimbark. Look at this random screenshot taken from a modern multiplayer game:
User posted image
Remember, people get bored( sometimes really fast) of these kind of games too.

Now look at your mod:
User posted image
Dimbark, no one aside from mappers like us will want to play a shitty mod(don't get me wrong at this point). Even us don't have time for multiplayer. You will be lucky to get 100 persons to play your mod, in singleplayer. Yes, that is interesting for us- it's just our curiosity to see what you have done. We may be spending about 5 minutes on your mod. That's why I suggest you stop working on any other multiplayer maps.

In fact, I discourage you from continuing this mod. Instead of making quantity, try focusing on quality. Try learning new techniques, apply them in an experimental map, design a singleplayer map or something and then show it to us. Try to advance to the source engine. Making a mod isn't at all simple, you need dedication. You have it. But dedication without quality means nothing, so you better invest your effort into learning rather than wasting it on maps that follow the same damn story that I had enough of.

And btw, is that you in your avatar?

P.S. One more thing, when I am talking of these modern games I am not absolutely reffering to the graphics. It's just that half-life has been smoked.. a lot.

Happy new year guys. After some loud music and dancing on stuff like "When you're smiling, I went to play some lol with my friend for 2 hours :).
You know, I was listening a UK podcast before 2 am(that's before 00:00 in UK). The guy made a countdown and I was expecting some special effects.
Instead "3...2...1.. aaand, you don't feel really much difference, do you ?". Well, I thought for a second, that's true. But it's half-true. You feel really great if you can start that party atmosphere.

So guys, I wish you a very nice year, with as many quality maps as possible, and everything that you want to come true. You know, if you really wish it can come true. Last year's new year I filmed the fireworks with my phone and promised myself to film with a camera the next year. And that came true.

Have a happy new year guys! Love for all! :heart:

Ok, I was really hoping nothing bad will happen right before New Year. But it happened.

My pc is in safe mode with networking. Windows freezes at startup. It appears to be loading things from the HDD, then suddenly it stops and it remains at that screen.
It is odd, but it happened after I tried opening Saurbraten. When I did that, it gave me a black screen( not the kind provoked by a GPU error, instead it just refused to answer CTRL+ALT+DELETE or SHIFT+TAB).
I don't know what the fuck to do. I am so damn nervous that I almost fist-knocked my pc from the desk.
Happy New year, indeed.

Does anyone have any idea what is happening?
[EDIT] Holy fuck. I have checked with every damn possible tools for possible system damages and everything is fine. Yet it still freezes in a normal boot. I think I'm going to try one hour of hardcore way- manually disabling services and see when it stops freezing to detect the bad one.

[EDIT] I reinstalled Windows. -_-

The effect shown ingame is just what's being caused by your spec map. The white bricks are really white which means they're going to be very shiny.
But the most shiny part are the unseen bricks!

Ok, I somehow managed to get bumpmapping and an alphaenvmask working. But with funny results again:
User posted image
Ok thank you for the cartoon effect dear Source engine, but it's not what I want right now.
I think I am doing something wrong. Here's what I did for the bump map.

I grayscaled the texture, and made some adjustments so that the brighter bricks are emphasized. I copy pasted that into the alpha layer and increased a bit the contrast for the specular map.
User posted image
Then I saved it as a 32bit .TGA
After that I loaded it into VTFedit, chose BGRA8888 for both "Normal" and "Alpha", and saved it:
User posted image
Also, the .vmt is this:
"LightmappedGeneric"
{
"$basetexture" "test_textures\brickorange"
"$surfaceprop" "brick"
"$bumpmap" "test_textures\brickorange_envbump_map"
$envmap env_cubemap
"$envmaptint" "[ 0.7 0.7 0.7 ]"
"$normalmapalphaenvmapmask" "1"

//"$parallaxmap" "brickorange_heightmap"
//"$parallaxmapscale" "0.08"
}
What am I doing wrong?

I think I'm going to stick with VTFedit, it's the simplest solution to me. Also, I have discovered that the above posted texture(the in-game screenshot), is actually using parallax mapping.
Rabid, CrazyBump costs money. VTFedit is an all-in-one, and it's free :).

The $envmap parameter seems to be adding a reflection to the texture as a whole, it doesn't consider bump maps or anything. I believe, from what you are talking guys, that there is a "specularity" map or something like that, a defined are of the texture which will shine? If that is so, can you link me to a tutorial on the valve wiki? I can't find it.
Argh, there's much to learn. I only fully understand how to create a basic texture right now.

I'm not entirely sure I see what the problem is. It's rendering correctly, isn't it?
I mean, look at this:
User posted image
That bump mapping is obvious. Mine is practically inexistent.
Gray scale the image and mess with the contrast to get a more defined bump map. That's how I do it but I use Photoshop's normal map plugin.
Photoshop normal map plugin? Hmm... I used the VTFedit tool to do this. Btw, Archie, if you're not using this what are you using? I read something about scripting this on the valve wiki. Don't tell me you are really that hard-core lol.
If you want more depth, you can change the height map scale from the default value of 2 after picking an image to import.
How can I do that?

And Urby, I think I understand what you're saying. But I still need more info about that normal map plugin :). (btw is there one available for GIMP ?)

I am trying to learn how to manipulate source materials, but it seems something is going wrong and I don't really know where I'm doing the mistake.

I am trying to create a texture( the texture is shitty, but that isn't important, it's for testing) that has bump mapping(normal mapping) and can reflect env_maps.

This is the texture:
User posted image
This is the normal texture:
User posted image
And this is not what I am expecting!
User posted image
This is the VMT:
LightmappedGeneric
{
$basetexture test_textures\ground_test_texture
$surfaceprop gravel
$bumpmap test_textures\ground_test_texture_normal
$ssbump
$envmap env_cubemap
}

It seems that you'll get no human-like answers until your ticket is escalated. This is exactly what I'm experiencing, but what this guy did here would be to tiring for me to do. Basically I posted about my source connecting problems, but what they do is give a stock answer with links from the steam troubleshooting( even though I told them I already read those links and nothing got fixed) and then close my question.
