True.

I have an ATi card in my laptop and desktop rig as well. All I can tell you is that they deliver nice performance for a low-mid budget card, but have unstable drivers lately.

I'm not totally familiar with GeForce cards above the 6xxx series, but as far as I know the 8500 GT isn't exactly a gaming beast. In high resolutions like 1400x900, you should turn AA off, or maybe even lower the resolution.

Btw, in 1024x768 - is that 5-10 fps gain with or without AA? Cards below x600 (8600, 9600) are pretty AA sensitive.

EDIT: Yeah, basically what Madcow said. :)

I'm very disappointed with Ubisoft. Assassins Creed sucked, and the graphics sucked too. Also knowing Ubisoft, Far Cry 2 graphics won't look as good as the trailers. Not as Crysis did, which actually the game looks a lot better ingame than in the trailers.
Although Assassin's Creed got quite boring after 2-3 hours - the gameplay was repetitive - and the story was just a random mess of historical events and fiction, the atmosphere, mood and music of the game was just awesome. And it wasn't ugly at all.

Crysis is pretty, but isn't that much an "open-world" game, as it was advertised to be. The gameplay got repetitive fast, and the story was incredibly shallow and boring. A game with great graphics, and highly interactive environment, but lacking a good story, something to draw the player into the whole experience. Just like a hollywood movie with awesome special effects and an assload of CG, but poor story. I also played through Crysis: Warhead, hoping, that Crytek learned from the flaws of Crysis - but I was disappointed to see, that it has only gotten shorter without making the plot more interesting. Just another unnecessary sequel milking a title.

On the other hand, I just started playing Far Cry 2, and with 1,5 hours in, it looks much like what Crysis should have been. You can choose, in which order you complete your missions, or if you don't feel like advancing, you can just simply go and cruise or run around, and explore the environment.

I agree, it isn't as good-looking as Crysis with everything up on max, but I don't have a rig to run it on the highest settings, and I can tell you, it looks and runs way better with medium/high settings, than Crysis did on my config.

Well, I didn't really map since I fixed this problem, so it may be, that it's slow when working on complex maps.

EDIT: I just recalled...when I was searching for a solution, I read that even if this works, it would make Hammer relatively slower. That's it I guess :\

But at least it works.

I have no idea, if it works with XP or not, my desktop machine also has the same problem with XP and a HD 2600 Pro, but I didn't bother to try and fix it, because I mainly use my laptop atm.

Maybe you could make a backup copy of the dll you have now (with the 7.11 drivers), and copy it into the Hammer folder.

No. That's because...
TWHL3 is a site developed (or actually still in development) for functionality and cleanliness, not messy, in-your-face unnecessaries.
...and I like it this way. I don't see what your point is in having a shitload of images. It's clean, loads fast, and is free from any unnecessary stuff, that would only slow it down.

Ok, it's my opinion, although if you have a good sense of humour and like games, that are purely fun, I can't understand how you can call it 'meh'. Whaterver, different people, different tastes.

And for the long loading times: There are plenty of 24/7 one-map servers, where there's no map change.

Well yeah, it needs lots of RAM - although I don't really understand what for - but that doesn't change the fact, that once you're in, it's a helluva lot fun. The gameplay and the characters are great, so you can't say that it sucks, just because it takes ages to load.

Back in the days, when I had a Celeron 433 with 64 MB RAM and played Max Payne, it took like 5-10 minutes to load a map, but I still played it, because it was awesome :glad:

in Desktop of August Post #253195
I've played through the entire game on my desktop, with XP running and DX9, of course - with medium details. My desktop has only 768 Megs of RAM, so I didn't experiment to move anything above medium details, only once, when I tried how the game would look like with everything up to the max. The result was...well, a horribly long load time and swap lock-ups. After a few minutes, when everything was in its place, I took a look at the environment - nice. Back to medium settings.

Yesterday I've installed Crysis on my notebook (Pentium Dual-Core 1.6 Ghz, 1,5 Gigs of RAM, AMD Radeon 2600 VGA, Failsta, as mentioned above), since it runs UT3 at playable framerates on high settings, figured I could give it a shot. It runs nice at medium-high settings, so I've again pumped everything up to the max...not playable, but I personally didn't notice any difference, as much as I remember the max settings on XP. It looked the same to me - nice shadows, crisp textures and HDR up the ass.

Maybe there is some slight difference, so I might notice it if I look closer again, but I don't see that big difference between DX9 and 10. I remember, when I bought my Radeon 9550 more than 3 years ago and started up HL2 - now that was visible difference compared to DX8 and my old Geforce 3. :glad:
