The compasses are a feature that was going to be added, but was never finished. It was for easy adjustment of Pitch Yaw Roll.

I assume you've got the WON version of Half-Life then. You will need a program like PakExplorer (Google is your friend) to extract the models, much like a ZIP file.

Ok, here's the lowdown on version 3.5.

Yes, this is the final version of Hammer and no, it will never be a final release. Secondly, all these "horror stories" are completely false: I've been using 3.5 since it came out and I've not encountered anything that would indicate that the release is buggy.

3.5 fixes bugs from 3.4 and also adds model support, which is extremly useful when mapping. I suggest you try it out (you'll need the updated FGD for whatever game you're mapping for. You'll also need to extract the models from the PAK/GCF file).

Hahaha WCD. :D You got pwned on that discussion.

Ah, memories. It will be my third year here come October, and boy, what a 3 years it has been. I cam as a noob, and now I'm a moderator here, and an operator on #twhl.

I still recall the week that contained the biggest controversy TWHL ever fac ed: the hack. Boy, there were some heated IRC arguements against jaardsi and m0p (helped by me): I remember Andy going totally berserk at them, as well as the rumour that went around that Atom was going to shutdown the site. Good times... :D

I also remember the time when TWHL was still relatively small, and all the members that have since moved on. T'was a very different TWHL to the one most of you know today, but I'm sure Alex, ZombieLoffe and the others will know what I'm talking about. ;)

Rabid: For the second question, he's asking how to reduce the effect of the push that props give when standing on them. You know how physics props prevent you from standing on them? I think, judging from what he's saying is that he's somehow set that effect in-game to be extreme and its throwing him off.

Yeah. HDR simulates the iris effect when walking into areas of varying brightness. In a dark area, your eye's iris will open to let in more light. This also works vice versa (i.e. the iris will close in areas of light).

In-game, this combines with bloom to produce areas of extreme brightness which gets adjusted according to what you see. Its a pretty cool effect that actually influences gameplay - sometimes you can't see if there's an enemy ahead because its too bright, so you have to wait a few seconds for the iris to adjust.

Depending on what you do, obviously.

DDR2 will be superseded by DDR3 anyway. GFX cards have supported it for a while.

1 gig is the mimimum for any computer if you want something SUSTAINABLE. You seem to be missing the key word here. Why buy some piece of crap PC with shitty specs because its cheap if it'll last you a month before slowing down?

I'd also like to find out just how smooth BF2 is on medium. 15fps isn't exactly smooth.

Besides, the 6600GT is cheap. Around $200-$300 here, which is a good price for a decent card.

I have 512mb of RAM and a P4 1.5ghz on a 6600GT and HL2 runs like a disabled donkey. Keep in mind that Elon wants it for ANIMATION PROGRAMS, which tend to suck juice REALLY quickly.

Yeah, don't listen to Crystalman for a start. :x

Go for the slowly become low range cards - something like the 6600GT which is a good, dependable card. Or you can go the ATi equivalent, which is, as I recall, the x800.

The 6600GT supports shader model 3, but some people have noticed that its implementation in nVidia based cards is overly fake - personal preference in my opinion. I suggest the 6600GT because it has shader model 3 - it may be a little more sustainable than the x800 (which doesn't have it, only the high end ATi cards have it).

As for the RAM: 1 gig is the minimum, no questions asked. 256 is simply ludicrous, and 512 is laughable. m0p is right. And yes, you are gonna have to spend some cash, unless you're really hanging out for a piece of shit computer. Your choice.

Thanks for the feedback everyone, it keeps me going!

As for the HDR: its extremly hard to capture in a screenshot. At some times it looks too bright, at some times it looks perfect. You really have to play it with it on to gauge for yourself. During last nights beta test, I don't think anyone had any concerns with the HDR (I felt that it made it look better actually).

Thanks to ZombieLoffe for hosting last nights match and providing feedback (as well as some slick screenies). I'd also like to thank Jax, Ansith and some other dude who joined the server to test.

Anyone for HDR? Keep in mind this shot was taking during an iris adjustment, so it obviously doesn't look this bright always.

Besides, if you ever wanted to do an OS upgrade in the near future to Vista, then you're gonna need at least a gig, if not two or more.

The graphics cards on Computer 2 really suck. Heck, I'm running a 6600GT on my piece of crap rig right now!

You'll want Dual Core for a start - more power on the CPU. 512mb is definately not enough RAM either - 1 gig is the MIMINUM these days. Make sure the motherboard supports PCI-E 16x, which is the connection you'll need for a decent graphics card.
