This is actually one I would have loved to make a map or series of maps for myself. Likely would have gone for a mini-mod starring a uniquely skinned and fully voiced Barney, but there is no way I have time for that. Maybe I will revisit the idea once The Core is out of my life.

Pineapple pizza is the shit.
You've got one extra word you don't need there.
Yeah, honestly that sentence is absolutely fine if you remove either pineapple, pizza, or the. Otherwise it's just wrong.

Regardless of the glory kill mechanic (which is a perfectly reasonable means of getting a small health boost in terms of gameplay) DOOM 2016 feels a lot closer to the frantic fun my friends and I had with Doom 1 and 2 back in the early 90s. They were never scary, but they were always hilarious. I enjoyed Brutal Doom for a while, but I much prefer the vanilla Doom experience.

DOOM 3 was such a massive disappointment in terms of the overall feel and sluggish pace. At the time it was visually stunning, but I never finished it because it was boring and it got uninstalled as soon as Half-Life 2 came out.

Looking forward to grabbing Eternal on pay day. :D

Yeah, the first thing you're going to need is an image that can actually work as a skybox. The image you're using is only really wide enough to make up a single side. You need a panoramic, 360 degree shot to work with.

Try Alt+P to check for errors. It might find these problematic brushes and allow you to fix them from there. Otherwise, you can use the Go To Brush button and then hit delete. It might not look as though you have anything selected, but hit delete anyways.

I've had to do that in the past. :P

Not quite sure what you mean. You shouldn't need to change the compile tools and you certainly don't want to be using Half-Life's original tools. :D

If it's not compiling with that wad in place, post a new compile log so we can see where it's tripping up.

Huh, that's odd. It should be included with the ZHLT compile tools because of their usage.

Best bet would be to just grab a fresh copy of the wad from the ZHLT files here.

Yeah
valve/zhlt.wad
Count: 0

Get that out of there and add it again using the correct location. Or, place a copy of the zhlt.wad in your valve directory. That's what's breaking your compile.

That's issue number one then because the compile tools are looking for it there. Let's take a look at your textures tab in JACK. Alternatively, you could place a copy of the zhlt.wad file (this might be in the same directory as your compile tools: Compile Tools/zhtl/) in your valve folder and try the compile again.

I think it works in Alyx because she's an established character who we're familiar with from previous titles. I don't think a talking protagonist by any way removes from an experience, but then I was brought up on Build engine games, famous for mouthy protagonists.

I still prefer it to control and camera being wrenched away from the player entirely so we can see a cutscene that we ultimately have no involvement with.

Spirit of Half-Life has a lot of issues depending on the version that you use. I've not tried it recently, but if I recall it is not possible to play through the whole of the HL1 campaign using the Spirit engine. A lot of features can glitch out and certain entities don't behave the way they should.

Spirit is best used for full mods where you have control over the entities/entity setups and can adapt to the quirks that go with it.

So, this is a thing I used to do from time to time and I know that it's been a long time since the last one. TWHL has gained a lot of new members over the years, some of the veterans have moved on but a handful are still knocking about.

The question is this: Who are you? What are you into? What do you like and dislike? Share as much as you are comfortable with and no more. This isn't mandatory. It's just a little way of getting to know a few of your fellow members a little bit better

About You

Name: Andy Morris
Age: 33
Hometown: Market Drayton, Shropshire, England
Relationships: 2 previous. Currently married with 2 kids. Intend to maintain that for a while :P
Occupation: Systems Administrator (Junior). Previously web design integration and first line support. SysAdmin is a whole new thing for me and I've got a lot to learn. Keeps things interesting.
Current goal(s): Finish The Core and start working on some of the other projects I've got floating around in my head. I want to write a book but have neither the skill or the motivation to sit down and do it. Professionally, I'd like to advance beyond a junior SysAdmin and take on some more challenging tasks. I've also put some serious thought into winning the lottery.
Politics: I'm not a politically charged person. The whole thing bores me.
Religion: None. I believe you should live your life as you see fit, not based on what some ancient storybook says (or is interpreted as saying).

Favourite Things

Food: I've recently just taken to throwing diced chicken, bell peppers and onions into a pan and stirring in some hot sauce. If I have tortillas in I wrap that shit with salsa and sour cream, otherwise it goes in a bowl. Lush.
Hot drink: Milky coffee with two sugars. Coffee snobs would see me hang for it.
Cold drink: Coke Zero or Pepsi Max. No preference
Snacks: I much prefer savoury snacks. Can't go wrong with a big bag of Doritos and hot salsa dip.
Movies: I'm not big into movies. I like action flicks and comedy if pushed. I'll often rewatch something I enjoy than seeking out new stuff.
Videogames: Deep RPGs and classic FPS games. Loving the current surge of retro FPS titles that are coming out and I will play Doom or Duke3D any day of the week. I'm also really into anything with a branching narrative that offer choice and consequence and as such, can be replayed.
Music: I''ll listen to most genres from classical to dubstep. At the moment I'm mainly listening to indie stuff and synthwave. Artists such as The Midnight, Mystery Skulls and SIAMES.
Other: I spend most of my time during the day with my family and the evenings and night at my desk, gaming or mapping. I'm kind of one-note in that regard, but I'm happy.

Disliked/Hated Things

Food: Fish. I really hate fish. The texture and the taste makes me sick. Tuna is OK though, for some reason.
Hot drink: Tea. Despite being English, I really do not enjoy tea at all.
Cold drink: Supermarket brand cola. Why is it so cheap? What corners are they cutting? Why does it exist?
Snacks: Liquorice or aniseed sweets. Liquorice tastes foul, aniseed is an actual assault of your taste buds.
Movies: Like I said, I'm generally not into movies at all, but I generally dislike the horror and romance genres. Predictable trash in both cases.
Videogames: Sports games. I don't see the point of sports in general. I'm also not a huge fan of strategy games, but I can happily play online, mainly for a laugh. And of course, horror again. Game with horror elements are fine, but all out horror schlock is just boring.
Music: Rap, R&B and most pop music. Just no.
Other: I'm not one for sitting and watching things, hence my aversion to movies, TV and sports. But I also don't enjoy taking part in sports. I just hate sports.

For the button text for WON/Xash3D, you'd need to replace their images in the gfx directory with completely black alternatives. They would still be clickable though. As for removing them completely, I don't have a clue. I guess there's some code somewhere. Same for the Steam menu.

Well trigger_once and trigger_multiple can be triggered by func_pushables. They have a flag for pushables. There is also a flag for No Clients, so they cannot be triggered by the player. :)

After that, it's just a case of doing the usual things, using multisources if you want multiple boxes to be in place and so on. Just check out the tutorials for that kind of thing.

in Shameful mapping confessions Post #343800
As a standard, I made every wall 6 units thick, rather than 8 or 16, meaning every level I made during my goldsource days was severely off-grid.
The Colony 42 RMFs made me so very sad...

Another from me which hinges on the way I played games for the longest time. I got into a habit of playing games with cheats from the start even on the easiest difficulty. This includes Half-Life, the expansions and even mods. I don't think I actually legitimately finished Half-Life 1 until after 2010 and I'm STILL working my way through Quake 1, the original Doom games and expansions.

So until 10 years ago, I played a lot of games on the easiest difficulty with cheats. I've no idea why I didn't want to feel challenged when gaming. Naturally, this led to me:
A) Getting my ass absolutely handed to me in every online game I've ever played
and
B) Doing the same thing when testing my maps/mods

So looking back on the way a lot of my maps have been received, they are simultaneously too easy while also not having enough ammo or health pickups... Feedback from The Core's pre-alpha seems the consistently describe a lot of my chapters are "fine" in terms of combat, but there aren't enough changes to heal up.

So yeah, if you're cheating/playing on low skill settings to get through games, maybe don't do that...

in Shameful mapping confessions Post #343775
Let's get one of those fun discussions going again. So during my commute, the radio station I listen to has a segment called The Fact Controller where people phone in with confessions of things they took as fact for years but were actually completely wrong.

I figured, why not do the same thing for level design. I've looked through a few of my older maps in the last couple of days, including some backups from The Core's early days and was ashamed to find some hilarious solutions to non-existent problems. Here are two of mine.

1. I was totally unaware that the locked door sound would play if a func_door was named but not triggered. My solution was for the locked door to be a normal world brush, with a 1 unit thick trigger in front of it that played the locked door sound when the player touched it... I only learned the truth in 2012 after Archie joined me in developing The Core and I was looking at one of his RMFs... I quickly updated all of my maps with the correct setup.

2. For the longest time I thought that info_landmark entities had to be in the EXACT same spot between maps. Again, I never realised the proper use of info_landmarks until Archie looked at some of my maps for The Core and asked me why some of them were WAAAY off in the corner of the grid. He laughed.

I beg to differ with the tilde marking light emitting textures. It appears on a number of textures that would never emit light, including the off variants of lights, as well as generic textures like computer side panels and such. Certainly not a bad idea to mark light emitting textures with a tilde though, assuming you don't just call them "light" :P
