Mapping has improved the gaming experience for me, because whenever I play a game, I'm more inclined to know what's happening underneath (i.e. How a particulary effect was done, the level design in general, scripted_sequeces). As such, playing other games gives me inspiration to map.
I do tend to get a little bit picky sometimes ("Why doesn't Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb have rag-dolling?!") but oh well.

For the second problem, click the word "Camera" in the 3D view and a list will come down. Select "3D Rendered".
For the first problem, what tutorials are you following exactly? Our tutorials are for Half-Life 1, not Source. Are you using the Hammer that's included with the Source SDK? If so, don't change the options because they're automatically set. If you're not, switch to the Source SDK which you can find in your Steam menu. You cannot use older versions of Hammer to map for CS:S.

Ever seen a warehouse with rounded walls?Just because a warehouse is square in real-life doesn't mean that it has to be in a game world. de_train for CS:S is a prime example.

It's definately a great start: the body doesn't look out of proportion or grossly deformed, so I think you can easily up the poly count to create a more detailed model. Good work.

The engine itself can handle pretty much anything you throw at itAh, don't be so sure of that. It really doesn't like 32 sided cylinders, I can tell you that.
The Source engine does have limits (most of which have been reached by RabidMonkey, and some recently by myself). You can go crazy, but be careful.

@Madcow: Steam probably just needed a clean up. Make sure you backup the GCF's every now and then, saves you strive if you lose it all. If it happens, you can copy the backup version and update it. It'd be quicker than re-downloading EVERYTHING again.

There's a possibility that the card is borked, you know. It's not uncommon. If you can, put the new card in a different (preferably non-Dell) machine and see if it works. If the errors are common, then the card is borked. If not, then your Dell is crap (sorry to say).
