don't care much about CoD4, since it doesn't really have any story
you can't have actually played it then.

It's got one of the best single player stories i've seen recently.
It really gets you caring about the characters, something which bioshock really failed to do for me.

edit:

Madcow, Bioshock's SP lasts too long.
I got to Andrew Ryan's office, saw the plot twist and stopped playing. It just got boring after that.

Nope, there is still a lights.rad, but very annoyingly to those of us who know the benefits of textlights, creating and using a custom lights.rad in a hammer4 compile is a bloody pain in the arse.

in mapping/texture differences Post #245562
Source removes the need for very many entities, storing surprising ammounts of information in the textures. To do this, textures come in 2 files.
One of these is a .vtf file. This is the texture's image itself.
The other is a .vmt file. This is a file which can be opened in notepad and contains all the information about the texture.
Any default HL2 textures(more commonly called "materials" in source, by the way) you do not need to ship with your map. This goes for CSS as well.

Because of this, it is no longer a requirement to tie brushes to entities to achieve effects like water, making faces invisible and many more.

func_wall is no longer used. You want func_brush.

You shouldn't have the aaatrigger texture. If you have any .wads loaded into hammer, unload them.
The trigger texture is tools/toolstrigger and is orange with the word "Trigger" printed on it in big, friendly letters. It will be transparent in hammer, and will be visible in-game unless tied to an entity.

Finally, brush based glows are a thing of the past.
Read up on point_spotlights, env_sprites, model glows and HDR.

I duplicated the layer and added a radial zoom filter to it before taking the opacity down to ~15% for the blur and used a colour channel adjustment layer for the blue.

I PM'd him to see if i could get him not to just blatantly ignore my valid questions.
? The engine can't support physics, which is a requirement for pretty much every single puzzle in HL2.
hey, look, i'm allready getting a real time physics engine for half life from aaron.
i lol'd.

Also:
look at the barrel
HAHAHAHA!!!! dude, he barrels like, what? 200 polys? i'm sure it will run perfectly in half life 1.
I was pointing out that it looked like shit compared to HL2 because it had to be simplified to be used in the HL engine.

I also note that you still ignored the rest of my questions, and clearly this is because you don't have answers for them.
give up and preferably become an hero too.

Agent-x, that really does look good, but it's besides the point.

It still looks bad compared to actual HL2, it still lacks complex physics, It still can't support high-poly models (look at the barrel ffs), it still can't support vehicles, and while you can make hl2-esque maps, you can't make locations nearly as vast as the HL2 versions.

Face facts. HL2 can not be remade in Goldsource.

ok. Listen. This is your final chance for redemption, thehalflifedude.

All i want you to do is calmly, coherently and honestly answer ALL of the following questions. It's not difficult, and it could potentially make a huge difference.

1. Why do you think people will want "HL2" in an outdated engine rather than the actual game? Keeping in mind that "they don't have a powerful enough PC" isn't an answer. See why earlier in this thread.

2. Why don't you just make maps/mods for Source if it inspires you so much?

3. Why do you completely ignore requests for screenshots of this map of yours?

4. Why do you completely ignore simple facts like:

? The engine can't support physics, which is a requirement for pretty much every single puzzle in HL2.

? The engine can't support vehicles like in HL2, which pretty much removes any chance of including 2 of the largest sections of HL2.

? The engine can't support the vast locations, both interior and exterior.

? The engine can't support all the high-poly models of HL2.

5. Why are you being so hostile to everyone? You say we're all mean here, but that's only because you completely disregard our good advice.

6. Half-Life 2 took 6 years to develop. Are you going to take that long?

7. What can you actually do? Aside from stealing other people's content?
ok? I'm not being mean. I'm not being unreasonable.
Just answer these questions and maybe people will take you seriously.
At the moment they won't because you are completely and utterly ignoring everything they're saying.

the city 17 map i made lagged down to 1 fps
that'd be because the 1997 Goldsource engine is not designed for the large environments of HL2.

This mod failed before it even began, because it's simply not possible to make anything remotely similar to HL2 in the HL1 engine.

You can't get the physics required for half the puzzles,
You can't map the huge expanses,
You can't have proper drivable vehicles,
You can't use nearly as detailed brushwork or models or textures.

The old engine has limits. You can't break them to the extremes you're planning.

because in 2005/2006, Hunter knew fuck all about making a mod.

That, and the fact that M_gargantua and myself are the only ones remaining of the original team.
It never helps to have so many staff changes.

Half-Life: Hostage Situation is not dead.
It is, however, on temporary hold for the foreseeable future.

I expect DPGames will pick up the pieces once OiFH is complete.

To all the people currently on the team:

If you will map again once this gets revived, great!
If not, please at least don't set us back any further. Send me what you have done so far, and what can be done with it will be done.

This is the final post in this thread.
Any questions regarding the mod should be addressed to
comment@hunter.weebitmagic.com
or sent to me via the PM system.

Goodbye for now.
