Can it really be that complicated to record voice acting and lipsyncing? (I don't see how it could be) Maybe try contacting dudes from other mods and see how they did it?

You could totally make them that way but could you possibly transplant cannon from the BG (battlegrounds) mod? I remember some of the cannons from that mod were pimp, but i don't know if they were tanks or coded in. If nothing else you could steal some of their pimp cannon models (but i know how you and i share the desire to make these things out of brushes!)

It won't be a problem, as long as it's compilable... it'll just get it's own map. Even if the ship doesn't fit in one map(LOL)we can still get the map in. That is, if you still want it part of the project? = )

Cool Zeeba, can't wait to see your entry! = )

I'm fairly excited because besides the good turnout we've had so far, we still expect to get a bunch more, high-quality maps. A couple that I'm aware of:

Muzza
Tetsu0 (pirate ship!)
Urbanebula(due summer 2009 when his gfx issue is resolved)
Daub and his ultra-detailed mega-masterpiece
ATDestroy
Hlife_hotdog (2nd map)
potatis
CStriker?
(Am i leavin anyone out?)

Anyway still more good to come = ). I'm going through to fix up lighting and add detail here and there throughout the project, and I plan on adding some surprises for the final release, so, stay tuned!

yeah you're right JeffMOD, but in the end, i think it's better that way--if not a bit more work to set up the duplicate hallways and changelevels. I don't mind doing it.

the only trouble i have is syncing the lighting from one level to another(it always seems to be noticably darker or lighter after you change, mostly due to differing light_environment values(i think). I've been trying to compensate by adding subtle textlighting throughout the rooms but still, most of the transitions don't match perfectly...

Jeez. way to add unnessisary details, Daubster. Now I feel like my mod project is plain, and I think I've added more detail than a lot of valve maps
I'd hardly call them unnecessary. The way i see it you can make your map interesting by making it have really great gameplay OR really good puzzles--like many of the maps in the previous compo--, OR, really good detail.

If you think your map isn't up to snuff you should by all means edit it. ;)

I'll keep my data at home, personally, on my personal computer.
While you can, anyway... Everything is moving towards(and has been for quite some time)being 100% online. When the time comes, you won't have a choice nor would you want to be unplugged(which will eventually be your only alternative to keeping private data).

Imagine having a sweet rig and no internet connection... It would be pointless, right? Well that time is coming soon when you will have to decide how important keeping your private data private really is...

just use info_texlights as described earlier in the thread. here's a quick recap:

1. Take any point-based entity and rename it "info_texlights"
2. use smart edit to add the name of the texture in the first field and the color/brightness in the second
3. you can add as many texlights in that same point entiy as you want. Check rooms4.rmf or rooms5.rmf, and search info_texlights if you want to see mine as example.

NOTE: if you want to add effects like blinking or strobing, you must turn the brush that has the texture light on it and make it a func_wall (works on func_doors too). 2nd from the bottom of the list of attributes should be "texture light style". Pick the type of effect you want like "flouresent flicker" from the dropdown, and you should be good to go.

FINALLY: to make a texture light switchable, again you must turn the brush with the texture light to be switchable to a func_wall, and you must give it a name. Under "texture light properties" pick "grouped". Now create a pointlight with the same name as the func_wall with a brightness value of "1 1 1 0.1" Now, when that light is activated by a button or a trigger calling it's name, the light will turn on or off.

If i've left something out pleez someone lemme know. = )

pretty boring project btw ..
I want to add a puzzle to mine, or at least a simple sequence you must perform to move on, but yeah, simple rooms with no objective is a bit boring, but at leasst it's something everyone can be a part of and actually complete. (unlike mods that go on for years with and are never completed)

I was thinking of adding a trigger_camera to the beginning to each room that would show a picture/avatar of the author and maybe show a description or what not, maybe audio? I dunno it would add a little more dimension to it?

If you have any ideas how to "spruce" it up, lemme know! = )
One more map to go until we have ten. If we win, do us goldsource peoples get cake?
no cake that i'm aware of = )

@Zeeba: Sweet! = )

@all: i'm having trouble preserving the same lighting level from one trigger_changelevel to another on some maps. I've tried using the zhlt light flag "opaque" and adjusting RAD values, but there are still major differences in the brightness levels going from one map to another. Any hints or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

What urby is your new computer, is it vista or an ATI video card that is your problem. Are you saying you can't goldsource mod anymore?

TJB: Sweet! downloading now... = )

Tetsu0: I don't think it has anything to do with the grid, as i do tons of sub unit verticies all the time, which would be impossible to shift to a 1-unit grid... The best way i can describe hlfix is by it's results in-game. like if you use a railing on a stairway, and if where for example a post meets the railing are not a 45 degree angle, you will see a gap in the game--even if it shows flush in hammer. HLFix makes the the stuff you make in hammer look more or exactly the same in-game, and is useful for anything with weirdly vm'd joints that the hammer compile would normally fuck up and show those ugly gaps. This makes it a lot easier to create complex shapes without ugly visual errors. [/wall of text]

Whoa. You just redefined detailed complex brushwork for me. :zomg: The bevel on the cylinder is cool enough, but you extended the bevel to the teeth as well... just wow. = )

I only care about off-grid if you can see visible errors. It can be amazingly time consuming to labor to keep complex stuff like that perfectly on-grid, but it sure is a great way to sharpen/expand your brushing technique!

Can't wait to see it finished! =>

Right I'm aware of that flag but it only works with the gravity gun afaik. Without it, anything bigger than a hatbox you can't pick up, regardless of any settings i've tried, specifically the "mass" setting.

btw i found making the "MinimumLightLevel" to a high number, i get the effect i wanted similar to goldsource textlights:

I personally stopped using it when i stopped finding infections of any sort. (I could be wrong but i think newer sps for xp and vista make AA obselete. Plus, i just looked at the current adaware website--which now seems to support 64-bit vista--, and am i correct in seeing they are only offering limited trials now through trialpay?

More newb q's:

func_physbox:
For func_physbox does it have any bearing to how this brush-based entity reacts with the gravity gun in relation to it's origin? (i notice wherever you create or clone the item it puts the origin there and leaves it there, and if you move it later, the origin stays put?)

Also is there a way to adjust the mass of a big func_physbox to make it pickupable without the grav gun? (i've tried but not luck with this, i can push big objects but not pick them up)

I've searched around for an all-things-func_physbox tutorial, but haven't found anything too great yet, so if someone knows of a good one pleez let me no = 0

Minimum light level:
I've looked for info on this flag but haven't found anything except the standard definition at VDC. I found a promising thread on HLFallout forums that seemed to describe it in more detail, but that forum is not responding right now (is it dead?).

I try bumping up the values to brighten brushes but it doesn't seem to do anything. Am i missing a step? = (

wise advice, because i never read any articles besides on this site for a while, twhl seems to lack an abundance of tutorials on many of the aspects of source mapping. (i've recently been using VDC, but i find it very general, and frankly unhelpful sometimes)

And about the sky comment, it was just that. Saying there would be "no point" to implementing sky in hammer though is just stupid... it would be really cool! (as well scrolling textures, simple water effects, etc.) Someday they will have a real-time-editor... = 0
