Curious as to why you would include "env_" in your texture name... I'm not saying that's the cause, but why not just sidewalk02? :P

I have always used lights.rad for the sake of consistency. I use info_textlights to get the values right and then when I'm happy I add the value to lights.rad :P

That's only when making custom light textures of course.

I'm really trying to keep the game play varied and interesting, rather than running from hallways to rooms and killing bads.

I'm also getting increasingly frustrated with glass and water rendering in darkened rooms... Limitation of then engine I know, but it's quite distracting in places. Gonna have to figure out a way to make it look natural.

@torekk: That's looking good. The only thing I would say is that the lighting is a little monotone. One thing I've done in my areas is to put different coloured lights up in the ceilings. Even just a teeny tiny red light occasionally up near the vents would add a lot to those hallways. :D

@Carrot: I do as a matter of fact. If I could, I would also force people to PLAY with filtering disabled!

@SSB: Thank you, I'm quite aware of VHLT and I use texture lighting (lights.rad) exclusively, except in specific areas where I want more control.

I would love to get into Monster Hunter World, but there are two things that are putting me off getting it. First is the price of the game on Steam, and the other is justifying said price with the amount of time I will be able to invest it, especially with Fallout 76 on the horizon.

@Unq: Hear, hear!

I'm just doing this to try and get the creative juices flowing. I'm trying to get out of my habit of creating really corridors that lead to more corridors. Something I openly criticise mods like Azure Sheep for, when all I do is the same thing with more detail... (FYI, The Core is going to suck, and this is why :P )

I'm going to use this challenge to try and break old habits. Interesting combat sections and more variation in game play.

I've really been digging into Half-Life's maps recently, the way Valve added detail (when they bothered) and the truly bizarre choices they made in some places.

I'm gonna work on something that I would have made back in 1999 when I first opened WorldCraft2.1, when all I had to work with was what came with Half-Life.

Shame about the HD models being default now but... I can turn a blind eye to that... or just have a whopping great message at the start that says to use the LD models.

As a fan of sniping in video games, the crossbow in HLDM is one of the worst weapons of all time. The single player variant has a much slower velocity, meaning that you have to anticipate enemy movement and lead your target.

In multiplayer, it's just a silent, bullshit death laser. This is why I always aim to put it in places where it doesn't work well. If my map has a tower, the crossbow goes at the point farthest from it, usually in a basement. If the player wants to snipe from the tower, they have to earn it.

You are definitely not alone. Just take a look through my comment history on this very site and you will see that I have a terrible track record when it comes to starting a project, getting bored or running out of ideas and then giving up. Even my most promising project, The Core, has been in and out of development Hell more times than I can count and that's been going for nearly ten years! I even started two community projects in the middle, one of which released, the other did not...

Then there's all the stuff I have started that don't relate to gaming/modding. I've started hundreds of books, I've spend money on crafting supplies and such to make props for videos which have then been left in the bag they arrived in before getting thrown out.

It means that you're human. Some people can commit to a project and see it through from start to finish, some cannot. I certainly cannot, but that hasn't stopped me having a career I mostly enjoy and making a family and all that shit.

Chin up. :D
monster_urby monster_urbyGoldsourcerer
Yeah, I would say that it's the opposite way around. I actually enjoy making textures with goldsource far more than when I attempted with Source. Admittedly Source offers all the effects like normal mapping, refraction and reflections, but that's just more faff that I cannot be bothered with.

In Goldsource I make texture in photoshop with dimensions divisible by 16 (squared images to avoid Steam Half-Life's blurring bug) and then copy and paste right into wally. Simplicity itself, but then I've been doing it for two decades...

Yes. It's using the Fallout 4 engine and assets and will likely be maintained by the former Battlecry team while BGS moves on to their next singleplayer games.

A sequel would have been called "Fallout 5."

Doom 3 was god awful. One of the worst games I've ever played. Doom 2016 was a blast if you ignore the multiplayer. No mention of MP in DOOM: Eternal, but hopefully they don't fuck it up again.
NineTnine said:How I felt after hearing Fallout 76 was announced and continue to witness a franchise I cherished from Fallout 1 and 2 become more and more warped with each installment, a changed animal from the love I first remembered, slipping through my fingers
I admit I've not had a lot of experience with the original games, but I really don't see the big deal with developers trying something new. Fallout 4 was a bad entry into the series. Fallout 76 is at least a spin-off so I don't mind the online aspect.

Personally, I much prefer Bethesda Game Studios current approach to game development compared to say... hmmm, of the top of my head, Valve Software.

A lot of stuff in the Bethesda Showcase. I'm only interested in a few things personally

Things what tickled me genitals (Good)
  • RAGE2 looks like a good time. A little more crazy than the original, which was definitely what it needed
  • DOOM: Eternal is definitely on my radar. DOOM 2016 is one of the better single player FPS games in recent memory
  • Fallout76 looks like a hell of a lot of fun. It's something new and definitely different. I've got no issue with it being online. A lot of my favourite games already are and this seems to have a few interesting and amusing features.
  • The Elder Scrolls: Blades is a mobile game, sure. However, it does look like it could be an interesting adventure. I'll likely play in on PC, and it's totally free so why not? :P
  • Starfield. I know nothing, but it's a singleplayer BGS sci-fi game, so I'm intrigued.
  • The Elder Scrolls 6. Again, no info, but I know I'm going to want it.
Things what left me genitals be (Meh)
  • Elder Scrolls Online... I just... I don't care
  • Elder Scrolls Legends is something I have downloaded and played and... I mean it's a card game. I'm kinda over it.
  • Quake Champions was a very generic online FPS when I last played it. I don't suspect that has changed.
  • PREY DLC is basically prop hunt.
  • Wolfenstein: Youngblood could be fun. I really enjoyed The New Order but I've yet to try any of the others. There's just other games I'd rather play

OK, so Microsoft just totally bombarded us with information. Here are the main things I personally took away from it.

Fallout 76 is four times the size of Fallout 4 and is definitely set in West Virginia. The gameplay trailer showed off some really beautiful wasteland areas to explore but made no reference to any of the leaks regarding multiplayer.

PUBG has definitely fallen from grace. Their trailer regarding upcoming features for the console version got a very withdrawn golf clap.

Dying Light 2 is not only coming, but it features consequences to your actions in quests and the narrative designer is Chris Fucking Avellone, one of my all time favourite writers in the industry. Seems to be leaning more towards an RPG, which I am in favour of one hundred percent.

After five years of speculation based on a teaser trailer that showed NOTHING, Cyberpunk 2077 is confirmed to be a thing. Might even see some gameplay soon... maybe in another five years?
