in (REQUEST) PS2 grunts Post #339857
Do you want PS2 models specifically, or just higher quality models for the grunts? The grunts in the HD pack for Half Life on PC are actually already higher quality in terms of texture sizes and poly count, though missing fingers for some reason...

Alternatively, you can use Ambient.Impact's models here: http://old.ambientimpact.com/downloads_npc.htm

Or for even higher quality there's Romka's models here: http://old.ambientimpact.com/downloads_Romka.htm

Otherwise, I'm not sure if the PS2 models specifically have been uploaded anywhere.

Urby's EA Press Conference Breakdown

Battlefield V - Two weeks ago we got a one minute "in game" teaser. Tonight we got a one minute "in game" multiplayer reveal... Very little in the way of actual gameplay. Apparently, also two weeks ago, the press got a three hour gameplay presentation talking about what is new in Battlefield V. The actual players are still in the dark as far as I'm concerned. Instead, they announce the Battle Royale mode that nobody wanted and briefly touch on customisation and a couple of gameplay features. Very very weak presentation

FIFA 19 - Something about football. Pass

Origin Access Premium - Likely a higher subscription fee for the same features as Origin Access. More money grubbing from the fat cats. Pass.

Battlefront 2 - Dice developer admits that they fucked up and claims that they are making changes, but in no great detail. Then talks about upcoming DLC for the fifty or so people still willing to spend money on this train wreck.

Unravel Two - A sequel to a game I've never heard of. Probably something that I would play with the kids. Cutesy co-op puzzle platformer. Apparently available right now. That's a pretty short reveal to release window, I'll give them that.

Sea of Solitude - Third person platformer which focuses on ones inner demons. The story focuses on feelings of loneliness, helplessness and hopelessness. Sounds like a good time...

Madden 19 - Time to make a brew.

Command and Conquer: Rivals - EA exceeds all expectations, deciding that there aren't quite enough nails in this particular coffin. Looks bollocks.

ANTHEM - Following the abysmal Battlefield showcase, this was the other one I was vaguely interested in from EA. Happy to say that interest has been flattened and is unlikely to come back. Looks very much like a Destiny clone, and that demo got old fast.

Summary
EA continues to push the same bullshit that players allow them to get away with, releasing sports games with a higher number in the title. They also continue their trend of butchering previously beloved franchises and finally fail to present their upcoming titles in any positive light. First show of E3 2018 and it's a complete bust. Golf clap for you EA. Golf clap and a bullet to the back of the head.

I am actually eagerly awaiting a few presentations this year. There are a number of titles that I am interested in but have very little information about:
  • Fallout76 is a curveball Bethesda Game Studios threw out not two weeks ago. Will be interesting to see where all these rumours of an online game lead.
  • Cyberpunk 2077 could be relevant to my interests, despite the only CDPR game I've played being The Witcher 3 which I thought was seriously over-hyped.
  • Battlefield V has split the community with it's reveal trailer, but the changes to gameplay and the news regarding no paid DLC definitely has piqued my curiosity.
  • RAGE2 could also be interesting. I would have preferred DEUM2 but that's not exactly out of the question if Bethesda isn't lying about having a lot more to reveal.
As for everything else, I'm sure Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft will have stuff to show off for their console markets, but none of it is relevant to me as an exclusively PC gamer.

@Dr.Orange: As I said with your Access Point map, it looks really authentic and blends well with the surface areas seen in Half-Life. Very nice. One thing I will say is that in the second and third shot, it does kind of just look like a big room with a rocky wall texture. I think it's a little too square, the corners are very obvious.

Unforeseen Tension

(They both sound like the kind of projects you'd see on MODDB)

Anyway yeah, [m]Surface Tension[/m] wins because it does. See previous posts for more details. Interesting to see Unforseen Consequences taking second place though. Well played Chapter 2.

On the mod front, I'm going to have to mention Fallout 4: New Vegas and Fallout: Cascadia.

The former quite obviously being a complete remake of Fallout: New Vegas (the best game of all time) and the latter being a new experience made by a bunch of experienced mod developers. Both projects are reinstating a lot of the RPG stuff that Bethesda stripped out of Fallout 4, hence my excitement.

Furthermore there are the Skywind and Skyblivion mods for Skyrim. I never played Morrowind and I barely scratched the surface of Oblivion, but both games look a little too dated for me. Hopefully these mods will be a suitable way to experience them both when they eventually release. :D

Update

While I'm not particularly hyped for it, RAGE2 seems like it could be interesting. The first game was a play it once and uninstall kinda deal for me, but hopefully Avalanche can approach the open world shooter with a little more finesse than Id did. :P

And now I guess I have to add Fallout 76, despite knowing absolutely nothing about it at the moment. That and Battlefield V could be interesting. I guess I'll wait for E3 now so that I can see what I think about it all.

I would absolutely love to make a standalone RPG, but the issue is having the time to learn a bunch of new tools and necessary, the coding required as well.

Like I said, this will be after The Core is out... so it's probably not gonna happen.

But thanks for the info and suggestions. I shall have to take a look. :D
Urby, are you adept with node-based coding?
What-based who now?
Urby, have a look at this "vault 88" or "vault 77" thing someone on YouTube was doing. It's incredibly similar to what you are asking in the goldsrc engine
Sadly, both those search terms now return a bunch of Fallout 3 and Fallout 4 stuff. :(

in Half-Life RPG (one for the coders) Post #339520
So I know this is a little far fetched, but one day I intend to finish and release The Core. After that, I will likely continue modding but something a little more interesting. One of my favourite genres is RPGs and I would really like to create one, but my only real ability is Goldsource mapping, so that's out. I could probably get by with Source if need be.

The idea would be to have the maps be fairly linear, but allow the player to bypass obstacles in different ways.

What I want to know is how easy/difficult it would be to add the following functionality to the Goldsource engine, maybe even say if it would be easier with Source.

1. Inventory System
The player would have a limited number of slots, say 16. Every single item from keys to health kits would take up a slot. Health and Armour would be applied from the Inventory screen. The player would have the ability to drop things if they needed to pick up a specific item and their inventory was full. Quest items (keys, repair tools) would need to be removable using triggers.

2. Weapon slots
The player would have 5 weapon slots, similar to standard HL. Melee, pistol, rifle, heavy and explosives. The player could only carry one item in each category and have the ability to swap out weapons they find in the level.

3. Dialogue Boxes (Essential and probably hardest :P)
Whether it's to respond to an NPC speech, or prompted by a certain action in the game (attempt to repair the machine), it would feature multiple choice dialog boxes. This would be a popup in the game with options the player can click.

In the editor, it would be a textbox up to 4 text fields. These text fields will also have trigger targets. Example of the fields in the editor.

Name: repairDialog
Message: The generator is not working. You can see the problem and could easily fix it with the right tools.
Option1: Attempt to fix the generator by hand
Option1target: repairFail
Option2: Attempt to fix with Tools.
Option2target: repairSuccess
Option3: Leave it alone
Option3target:
Option4:
Option4target:

Then repairFail would simply trigger another dialog box such as

Name: repairFail
Message: You attempt to correct the problem by hand, but it is not possible without the right tools.
Option1: Leave it alone
Option1target:
Option2:
Option2target:
Option3:
Option3target:
Option4:
Option4target:

I've not gotten too far into it. Walter went straight to Vault 111 and the main quest has you find a hollowtape recording of Shaun's kidnapping. You're then tasked with reporting it.

I've only spoken to Codsworth regarding the main quest so far. The conversation largely plays out the same, though your character's responses are all different. Codsworth has you confused for his previous owner, which your character puts down to a malfunction from 200 years with no servicing and so on.

Tomahawk is going to avoid Sanctuary and Vault 111 completely. Will be interesting to see if they've covered all possibilities when she get's to Diamond City. I highly doubt it, but for now it's the best option and it's working a treat. :P
  • - - - - - - - - -
Aaand HOLY CRAP, it gets a pass! I got to Diamond City with Tomahawk having completely missed Vault 111 and any mention of Shaun. When asked by a number of people what brought me to Diamond city, I could either keep it to myself, say I was just passing through or say that I was looking to do some trading. Well played, mod.

Speaking of Diamond City, it's a good way to get a new look if you're considering say... terrorising the Commonwealth.

She's proving to be a real fun character to play as. I didn't realise stealth would be so amusing. I heard two raiders talking about a settler who did a Micheal Winslow routine to trick them into thinking he had grenades and a machine gun, before pretending to ride away on a motorcycle.

Shortly after, she thwarted a would be ambush by entering through a locked door and quietly dispatched the whole crew of raiders with just a combat knife. Really quite satisfying!

Fallout 4 really did have the issue of "go here and shoot the things" compared to the number of times combat could be avoided in New Vegas.

I really hope they revert their RPG changes and keep the combat improvements. At least Todd Howard admitted to BGS screwing the pooch with the dialogue system. Hopefully we won't see that particular issue again.

Also, they're going to need to do a lot more work on their RNG elements if I'm ever going to enjoy legendary enemies/loot and radiant quests.

I thought this thread already existed, but I guess not.

What games are you most looking forward to? Are there any titles on the way that you're grabbing on release day? Any hints of something possibly showing at E3? Grabbed an early access game that's really going places?

This is the place to talk about it.
Stuff that's definitely coming

Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire
This Obsidian Entertainment title drops in just under three weeks. I didn't back the campaign, but I've been watching the developer updates on their channel. Pillars of Eternity is one of those games that I adore, but really need to be in the mood to play. Having said that, I am definitely grabbing this at some point.

Monster Hunter World (PC)
This has no official release date yet, but I imagine it's going to be a lot of fun. My getting it depends on the number of friends who are also interested.

Speculation and Rumours

Bethesda Softworks is holding their own press conference at E3 again this year. Last year's show was a bit of a flop, only running for a total of 40 minutes. A lot of their fans, myself included, believe that they were building up to a big reveal that was cancelled at the last minute. Pete Hines looked really uncomfortable on stage compared to his presentation prior to Fallout 4's reveal. Personally, I hope it's Starfield, a title trademarked by Zenimax way back in 2013 and potentially one of the two new IPs they have mentioned. This could mean that the game has been in pre-production since Skyrim release in 2011 and when into full production in 2015/16 following Fallout 4's release.

Also, Pete Hines has stated that the run up to E3 is their "Hell on Earth" time of the year. If that's not a hint of a DOOM(2016) sequel reveal then I'm a fairy princess. (I shall change my TWHL sub-title to "Fairy Princess" for the rest of the year if I'm wrong about this.)

Then back to Obsidian Entertainment again. They are also working on something publicly known only as Project:Indiana. It's being lead by Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky, two of the guys being the original Fallout games and New Vegas, my favourite game of all time. Pretty excited to see what they are working on with a much larger budget than the Pillars of Eternity games. I'm hoping on an open world, first person RPG, but there is literally no information about this at all, other than the potential name, The Outer Worlds, a 2018 trademark revealed by yours truly :P

I also fired up Fallout 4 again. There's an ongoing debate with Archie about it being a better game than Skyrim. Personally, I disagree. Skyrim lets me play as a number of different characters with differing play styles. The passive thief, the deadly assassin, the honourable warrior, etc. Fallout 4 you play as the Soul Survivor and you shoot people with guns... That's pretty much it.

Playing through it on Survival difficulty, with some mods to get rid of the terrible sleep-to-save bollocks. It's challenging, but so far isn't really changing my mind.

I love Fallout, but Fallout 4 does not deliver. It's still a great game, but probably my least favourite release from Bethesda Game Studios.

Unforseen Consequences is cool and all, as I mentioned previously I really liked the eerie tone it had. However, my vote goes to [m]We've Got Hostiles![/m]

The second half of Office Complex teases the arrival of the soldiers. Now I personally had seen the reviews and trailers prior to Half-Life's release, but for the uninitiated, seeing the grunts open fire on scientists was probably a Hell of a twist. I know it caught my dad off guard back in '98. :D

I still didn't know what to expect at first. I thought maybe the grunts were there to save you at first, then turned on you later. Either way, this chapter is an absolute blast, with multiple ways to approach some of the combat areas. The vent crawling right at the end is a bit of a let down, but lets you catch some of the conversations between the grunts.

This is where Half-Life hits its peak, pitting you against everything the HECU have to throw at you. Also, it's simply massive. Think about some of Half-Life's greatest moments and you'd be surprised how many occur in this chapter.

I was going to say Residue Processing simply because it's not Xen, but in all honestly, RP kinda sucks. It's the most nonsensical section of the supposed Earth based facility and the whole conveyor belt section is a tedious chore.

[m]Interloper[/m] did have a little bit more to it than platforming and featured the alien factory with the working vortigaunts and stuff. OK, so it's not great by any means, but Residue Processing needs to piss off forever.

Anomalous Materials for me. I love walking around and pestering the scientists, listening to the announcement system and blowing up casseroles. This is again, something that I loved to replicate in Hammer back in the day. Just making a place that seems busy and active.

Lambda Core represents a lull in the gameplay for me. We get the Gluon Gun, or in my case, we ignore the gluon gun for being dull and bad. The grunts are gone and have taken the interesting combat with them. The chapter relies too heavily on teleporting and platforming over green goo. The sense of place takes a complete nose dive, almost the exact opposite of what is established in AM.

Lambda Core gives me a real Sunday evening kind of feel. The fun part is over and you've gotta do these really awkward jobs that you've been putting off, before ultimately winding down so you can get up for Xen in the morning... urgh.

in Best Half-Life Chapter Tournament Post #339249
I like both chapters equally so this is a tough one to call. On the one hand, On A Rail has some great battles between the grunts and the vortigaunts. It's also probably the most labyrinthine chapter in the game with a whole load of areas to find if you leave the train. I got totally lost the first time I played it so I hated it for a while.

[m]Blast Pit[/m] was the first thing I ever saw relating to Half-Life, waaay back in 1998, about a year before I even got the game. It blew my mind and the scale of the tentacle when it reaches in and grabs the scientist scared the crap out of me. The one thing that let's the chapter down is the backtracking. Getting back up to the control room is tense the first couple of times, but now it's just a slog.

Incidentally, On A Rail was the second thing I ever saw relating to Half-Life, moments later. :P
