No worries, we've all been there. ;)

There shouldn't be any difference in the compilation process. None that I ever noticed anyway.

I suggest you update your compile tools though, ZHLT is a thing of the past nowadays.

Give VHLT a try, those are by far the best tools around for GoldSource at the moment (and they're still being updated/improved). There's tons of visual benefits to using them (way higher lighting quality etc.), and they have far better error reporting, which should be pretty useful for any new mapper.

No, there won't be any compatibility issues.

3.5 just allows you to view models/sprites in the 3D perspective window (you'll need the up-to-date FGD for that) - it's a really useful feature.

I don't know of any hard limit to the number of WADs you can use in Hammer, but I doubt it's a great idea to utilize, say, 20 different WADs in a single map.

I suggest you use Wally to edit/merge some of those WADs, picking out only the textures you need.

Have a look here for more HL tools/utilities. I'd also upgrade to Hammer 3.5 if I were you - there's really no reason to still be using 3.4 nowadays. ;)

They are SUCH a fun show. Get drunk, go crazy. They really cater to their fans during the shows and play the really energetic things. He came on stage with a bottle of wine, and by the end of the show it was empty.

(a bit of it was on us)
That was my experience in a nutshell too. Except it was open-air with bad weather. The crowd was on fire nonetheless. :D

Same, the machete by ZERO is nicely crafted and has some really quality textures, but design-wise it's really plain.

New maps!
  • dfg_hmm_dust4
  • cs_bikini
  • de_predator
  • de_wallmart
  • de_vertigo
Added a couple of 3D_Mike's maps (bikini, predator) - those were always way ahead of their time. Also remembered de_wallmart, a nostalgic lulzy map by Squall. I've also added dfg_hmm_dust4, as requested by Rufee, and included vertigo in the mapcycle.

Good games earlier today!

Added two standard maps to the cycle:
  • cs_estate
  • de_survivor
Also updated the server rules. Spawnkilling is now forbidden.

EDIT:

I can see where you're coming from, but there's already loads of CSDM servers running extra mods like WC3, sentries, etc. I want this to stay vanilla cause there's a real shortage of pure DM servers without extra mods or restrictions, at least in my region. Not to mention the lack of variety in maps as you've mentioned. Those are the reasons why I started this in the first place. ;)

Deathan:
Yeah, the bulk of the players join in the evening at around 22:00 GMT. That's probably the only time when the EU and US playtimes overlap, so aim for that and you're likely to find company!
That can be a bit late for Central/Eastern Europe though, so there's often smaller groups playing at ~ 20:00 GMT.

Oh, and speaking of players, if any of you are a part of a clan or any other group that plays CS, do invite them over. The more the merrier!

No surprises there. I've spent a huge amount of time on MW2 multiplayer. It used to be really fun.

This isn't 100% accurate though. I only bought Steam versions of HL1/CS 1.6 back in like 2007 or something, and that was past my heyday with those. I'm pretty sure I should have ~1.5k+ hrs on non-steam 1.6 and at least 300hrs on WON/non-steam HL1. I would play those regularly pretty much every day when I was in school, not to mention mapping for them.

I also have 150+ hrs on BF3, 36hrs on Diablo 3 and probably ~60hrs on SC2.

Added a bunch of maps!
  • mp_farm
  • cs_malibu
  • de_rats_2001
  • de_rats2_2002
  • de_rats3
  • nth_lets_take_mothers_tank
  • de_storm
Mp_farm is up, as requested by 2muchvideogames. Thanks to Elof for reminding me about the rats series - I've added the whole official trilogy. Malibu was also made by CyberRat - it's quite the nostalgic piece of work. It also reminded me of lets_take_mothers_tank, another epic random fun map. Finally, I've included de_storm in the map cycle, not sure why it ended up being overlooked.

I didn't add the knife maps, as requested by Stojke, purely because CSDM overrides all map weapon settings, meaning they would just turn into mindless killboxes. We'll have to stick to regular maps I'm afraid, sorry man. :(

Keep those map requests coming!

Oh and thanks to everyone who joined in tonight's game! I think we had 12 players at one point tearing it up on arabstreets. Bloody awesome!

I think it's a pretty neat discovery. I haven't run into issues like this myself, but I don't see much point in disputing it either, especially if there's a group of gamers that would benefit from maps using this technique.
If allowed I'd like to organize all the information and add it to the tutorial database.
Go for it!
Use our tutorial proposal system. Note that you don't need a full tutorial in the proposal stage - just an outline of what you'll be writing. Once we approve it, you'll be able to write/publish the complete thing.

I could write a tiny plugin to do that actually, good point. I'll get to it.

Changes/additions:
  • Added de_twhl2011 and cs_mansion
  • sv_airaccelerate is now 100
  • Players now spawn with an HE grenade along with their selected gear
Existing bugs:
  • The VIP still can't equip primary weapons in as_ maps. I've done some googling, but I couldn't find any plugins that would fix that. Does anyone know of a plugin that would enable primary weapons for the VIP in CSDM? If not, maybe someone with the appropriate knowledge could write one? (pleease?) :3

Some of the best lighting I've ever seen in GS. Love the deep shadows in the top right contrasting with the rest of the scene.

If you're looking for nitpicks, I'm not sure I get that greenish drip texture appearing in the middle of an otherwise perfectly dry wall. I understand it breaks things up, but logically it doesn't make much sense.

Besides, it's still going to be a while before good custom maps for it start popping out, warranting a custom server. And there's plenty of good standard servers available for GO, which isn't the case for vanilla CSDM.

I've been wanting to fire up a CS server running oldschool/unpopular maps from the earlier versions (1.0-1.5) for ages, and I finally got 'round to doing it. It was a huge nostalgia trip going through them all. :crowbar:

I've also been playing a bit of CS Deathmatch lately, so I figured I'd put that on the server as well, especially since most of the maps are too imbalanced/large for normal play. Fast D/L is available, so there won't be much waiting involved either.

While the primary focus of the server is running those ancient maps, I'd still be more than happy to host your 1.6 maps, or any other cool & forgotten stuff for the game. Post any maps you want on the server here and I'll have them uploaded. :)

If you have any suggestions/feedback, let me know!

Other than that - join in & have a few frags! GL HF!

What's wrong with sharing your work on as many sites as you can? We're one of the few places where you can get full-on professional feedback, as well as extensive in-depth reviews if you win map of the month. Why should you be forced to take part in the forum discussion if you're just here to share your work?

How can an influx of maps in the MV possibly be hurting this community?

I've played COD4 a few times, but I clocked in ~400hrs on MW2. I really enjoyed the multiplayer, even with the game-breaking stuff like tubes and killstreaks that encouraged camping instead of going for the objectives. It was just really fun to rush around cleaning out camper nests on domination with a group of friends. That and booster hunting.

It pretty much became obsolete to me once BF3 came out though. That's the ultimate modern multiplayer shooter out at the moment imho.

Ok, the game might not have singleplayer mode
You can create a private game with only people on your friends list allowed to join, whom you can always ask to leave if you want to keep playing alone. The gameplay doesn't become multiplayer-only by storing your character data on a server or requiring a connection at all times. It would only become that if it were literally impossible to play the game on your own, and that's not the case.

Steam is a lighter version of this anyway - you can't install/register any games on it without initially connecting to the web. I agree that it might be problematic to play in say 10 years time, but people will have cracked it long before that, and there will be alternatives.

Just spent the last 9 hrs playing D3. Finished Act I with two different characters accompanied by two different groups of friends. Can't remember the last time I enjoyed any game this much.

It's a ridiculously fun, beautiful and all-round well crafted game. If you enjoyed D2 (or any hack/slash RPG) and aren't willing to give the D3 singleplayer a shot due to it being online-only or because of the marketplace (which doesn't even affect your SP experience in any way), then it's totally your loss. Every con named in this thread so far is outweighed tenfold by the pros.

EDIT: Built both my characters on the EU server, Blitz. Is there a way to transfer them? I'd totally be down for some co-op.

1] Yes.
2] Yes. Pickups or expensive items.
3] Something that wouldn't make the game too easy at its latest stages. Balance it with your difficulty curve.
4] Depends on how rewarding/fun the process of the coin gathering would be. If it's plain backtracking to check every nook & cranny then no.
5] Only if I were to hit some sort of area that I can't progress through with the lives I currently have. And only if the grinding itself is fun.
6] Potions/powerups could replenish your HP. Lives could be more expensive items, letting you respawn where you died without having to restart the game.

Look into Terraria. Its HP system sounds a lot like what you're trying to create. In that game, you start off with 100 hitpoints. You can use potions to heal yourself and life crystals to increase your max HP to 400.
