Question 5 = A square manhole cover can be turned and dropped down
the diagonal of the manhole. A round manhole cannot be
dropped down the manhole. So for safety and
practicality, all manhole covers should be round.

Question 9.
A man went to a party and drank some of the punch. He then left early.
Everyone else at the party who drank the punch subsequently died of
poisoning. Why did the man not die?

Correct painkiller

It was day time

Question 5.

Why is it better to have round manhole covers than
square ones?

This is logical rather than lateral, but it is a good puzzle
that can be solved by lateral thinking techniques.
It is supposedly used by a very well-known software company as an interview question for prospective employees.

Correct G_KID.

Question 4.

A man is wearing black. Black shoes, socks, trousers,
jumper, gloves and

balaclava. He is walking down a black street with all
the street lamps off.

A black car is coming towards him with its light off but
somehow manages to

stop in time. How did the driver see the man?

Question 3.

A man and his son are in a car accident. The father
dies on the scene,
but the child is rushed to the hospital. When he arrives
the surgeon says,

"I can't operate on this boy, he is my son! " How can
this be?

RotatorSplint came close to the answer, so now I will reveal the Rain part of the question.

1. The man is very, very short and can only reach
halfway up the elevator buttons. However,if it is
raining then he will have his umbrella with him and can
press the higher buttons with it.

Ok here is another, lets call this question 2, I will give the answer after 3 attempts to solve it.

1. There is a man who lives on the top floor of a very
tall building. Everyday he gets the elevator down to the
ground floor to leave the building to go to work.Upon
returning from work though, he can only travel half way
up in the lift and has to walk the rest of the way
unless it's raining! Why?

(This is probably the best known and most celebrated of
all lateral thinking puzzles. It is a true classic.
Although there are many possible solutions which fit the
initial conditions, only the canonical answer is truly
satisfying. )

in Gaming Chapter Post #191387
We can all agree that gaming either violent or general role play does not breed killers or violent people, the majority of the human race use these type gaming situations to emulate situations that we can safely do without hurting anyone.
For example: I have shot many a terrorist/counter terrorist and feel no remorse (except for the accidental team kill *cough), I have played all the Tomb raider games and have no passion to have a sex change (although it would be nice to have my own boobies to play with).

In all that I am saying is we might be able to pick the kids that will see these games as a reality check and feel the need to act out the fantasies in real life and feel no remorse for their actions (the Charley Manson?s of the world), these people are a minority in society, they where born defected/damaged.

Oh in answer to your question satchmo, I would like to see your chapter on the subject :)

We had a guy in Tasmania (Martin Bryant) who went and shot men woman and children at a fast food outlet and in the street, he had no remorse, no emotion, was this from a computer game or a movie that he related to? Sadly we may never know, he has not talked since the time it took place.

Im with you on this one Ant, when I play and see servers alive with home grown maps, this indicates to me it still lives on.

The fact that it seems to have been less active a community than in the past, shows that people's lives change and priorities change, they may still map/play for HL, I myself have set priorities and enjoy mapping for HL1, CS and CZ. Alot of my maps are not published on the Internet, they are played at local LAN gaming sessions in my area.

I cannot devote a full week or month to any one map, but instead I spend about 3 hours every second or third evening, a map can take me anywhere between 60-140 hours to complete and that could elate to 2-3 months.

So I believe that HL will not die, it may give that appearance at times but I find it alive and well here in Australia (kinda like a secret clan thing), my only advice to others who may see HL as dying, is to keep your interests/hobbies alive, sure it takes good time management but its worth it for me.

I don?t need convincing wether its dead or alive, that is evident from good site's such as TWHL or Snark-Pit and the helpful communities within them, Sure some people have bad attitude and flame your map's that you submit, its water off a ducks back to me, I don?t get offended easily, if people act childish and make negative remarks, it's either jealousy or maybe because they are children or the fact that some people cant handle criticism.
I like mapping because it gives me a pallet to express my fantasies of fictional worlds/places.

The only time it will die is when power supplies for our electrical equipment diminishes/ends.....but I will be long gone by then :)

(just my 2 cents worth)

Proof you dont know me...my above post is true, I do what I explained, the best rush was when I was on top of "Table top mountain" in south Africa, I was leaning forward into the wind at the edge near where the cable car docks and two climbers where beneath me looking up. :|

1) I often find myself sleeping on the toilet, and when I wake up and try to stand up I fall to the ground because I have been leaning on my legs and cut the circulation to them, it?s like having temporary paralysis.

2) When I am in an elevator I often scream out loud "I think the ropes have snapped, we are all going to die", this makes the nervous people panic.

3) Whenever I go rock climbing and reach the top I stand on the edge and if the wind is against me I lean forward knowing that at anytime the wind could drop of and I would fall. (Don?t try that people)

Over here in Australia we call that work place bullying, this "Autocratic" behaviour is not acceptable and is reportable, the offender can be :
1. Fined.
2. Sacked.
3. extreme cases will mean jail.

I had a boss whom treated me the same way, I got in touch with the employee's advocate, he sent me some forms, I filled them out and a meeting was arranged.
That boss was saked and fined, it was up to me to press charges for jail sentance.
This type of management is unacceptable and was outlawed in the mid to late seventy's.

At the school I work for, we have seniors drpping out of school because they don't like the new "no holes in your jeans at school" rule.
Even over here down under in Australia we share the same problem, youth of today live for the moment and don?t see the big picture.
School is only for a short time in your life, I was succumbed by peer pressure at school and rebelled against the system, and I see today that it is worse with the gang issues in schools.
The sad fact is that once these kids leave and get on with their adult life some will not break that mentality and the others like myself will have to work hard to achieve our goals.
Fortunately for me I have moved on from these times and have secured a very well paid position within a mining company management team.
Sure I wish I paid attention at school, I would have had this job many years earlier, what worries me is that youth of today don?t want to get into trades such as mechanical (Fitter and turning), carpentry, plumbing etc.
We will have a shortage of skilled labour and to many thinkers (uni students), it?s like the saying "to many Chief's and not enough Indians".
