in custom sounds Post #191349
don't place it into the .pak, create a folder called sounds in your valve folder, the put it in there. This folder also needs to be included in a mini-mod if you uploaded your map. Its never a good idea to mess with the original .pak... trust me, i've learnt the hard way!! ;)

in VPU Overheating!!! Post #191299
at this rate, im never putting my side panal back on!!! i've one case fan in the back, two in the PSU, one which draws from the MB, and ejects it into 'outside', errmmm.... one on the MB for cooling the copper pipe, and an Artic Freezer 64 on the CPU.

I tried underclocking the GPU to about 1/2 - 200mhz, and 300mhz processor and memory respectively - and temperatures are still unacceptable. At this underclocking, the GPU temp. is still idle (1 hour on windows desktop) at 48 degrees (C) THIS CANNOT BE RIGHT!!!

no gaming? :aghast:

[cries to self in corner]

but surely there is something up? I grant in this temperature (climate) in makes it more difficult - my room alone is on average 32 degrees (C) and my PSU chucks out a lot of heat.

So forums suggested that the temperature gauge is 'wrong' and that the software is being tricked into accidentally triggering the vpu recover.

Arrrghhh, Shit man! - a lot can be said of the passive cooling of the 9200SE that I previously owned, the card couldn't do s**t, but atleast it didn't melt!

Im currently playing all games on medium settings, and am capping the FPS whereever possible are around 30. Its ludicrous!! :D

in VPU Overheating!!! Post #191279
Ok, so I know I've created a post for literatary every individual PC component I own - but this is seriously bugging me, so please, bare with me! :D

I have a PCI-E X850XT PE, and as soon as I play heavy-load 3D games for a while, the VPU resets, (it has VPURecover software included in the most recent Catylst drivers)

What happens in this instance, is the screen goes blank, the graphics card fan goes mental, and then 10 - 20 seconds later, it either all comes back, or the system crashes.

So, using ATITool, and the accompaning 3D test, I run it, and monitored the VPU temperature - and within about 10 seconds, it rose to about 95 degrees (C) ....

....This CANNOT be good!! Many reviews I've looked at have said that VPU's over 65 dgrees (C) on heavy load are considered dangerous! :)

-> I have currently underclocked the VPU

-> Case open

-> Case fans MAX

-> Moved Graphics Card to other PCI-E slot, so more air-flow

I have alsoordered an Artic Cooling replacement for my stock cooler, but does anyone have any other suggestions to improve this situation? - It hurts to underclock a graphics card, but this is just stupid!

Thanks for your feedback

ok. the mb supports 4GB of ram (ASUS A8N32-SLI)

i will take peoples advice then, and use two 1GB sticks or 1.

And my final question, how much difference is there between PC2700 and PC3200? Cheers

yeah, ive heard that its not a good idea, but I know everyone does it... so it is possible. The manual [cough] also says that they can be mixed, as long as they are of the same latency, and ECC or NON-ECC, etc. I also want to avoid spending more money now, but its just annoying having more ram that isn't usuable

its already got the lastest version. Thanks what I though immediately, but I got onto the ASUS website, and everything matched up. Its just baffling! Maybe I'll try removing the 1GB stick, booting up, then adding the other (not while on! :P )

Atm, my comps off anyway, turns my room into a sauna after about 20mins. Especially in this weather!

put an invisible brush really far away beneath you, so it appears that there is only sky, but really there is a floor - or it could even be an illusionary, although not sure if it would have the required effect?

in Compiling Problems Post #190690
that's what valve did when they compiled. They would map a section, then transfer it to a dedicated set of computers for compiling, then transfer the compilied BSP to another for testing, etc. A hassle, but common sense really in such a fast-passed [cough] production. I've wondered though, "which computers are the most powerful?" if this is even a factor? the mappers, compilers, or beta testers?

I know this ain't the best place to post, but I had trouble finding the correct search query, so I couldn't find any good results, even though there must be many.

On my old system I had 1.5GB of PC2700DDR Ram no problem. It had 2 slots, so there wasn't much to worry about.

However, now when I install the ram in the correct method / slots (as shown by my manual :) - yes, I did read the manual) However, my PC only detects 1GB. I have tried every other config, and have no idea. Both sticks are exactly the same except for size, and both work in other computers.

Also my graphics card keeps resetting, but that's for another day!! ARRRGHHHH.......

in Compiling Problems Post #190637
of course, you don't need the game - just don't get it to launch the .exe and then just place the compiled map on a pen-drive and transfer. Unless i missed the whole point?...

EDIT:: obviously you need ZHLT somewhere on the computer as well, and the wads as well, but not the 'game'

EDIT2:: actually, i don't think you need the wad, only to play, as it just remembers the names, not the textures. Ie, you can obviously change textures, and not have to re-compile. So no, you shouldn't need the wads.

or maybe you need to 'treat as one' otherwise it will try to fit or justify the textures to each individual brush that you have selected

in HL2 FPS Limit? Post #190233
yeah, i know the cap is 72... you can change it by typing "fps_max #" but why bother? why limit the fps... surely the more the better ;)

however, I sort of solved my own problem about 2 minutes after posting, however, im still interested as to why you would want to cap it?

the limit is actually 300 by adjusting

btw, averaging 170fps at MAX and 1280x1024 on first water level... for those wondering ;)

in HL2 FPS Limit? Post #190229
After putting my new comp together, and loading up HL2 for the first time, I noticed that while running at 1024x960 or whatever, and lower graphics, I got 71fps constant, and likewise at MAX graphics. I would have expected either a higher low res fps or a lower high res fps? is there a reason? cheers

5 minutes compo ftw... now that id like to see! ive tried similar with a m8 - we call it 'speed mapping' (original huh?) and basically we set each other challenges to map... I had 10 minutes to make a fair-ground ride... and I passed! ;) In some ways, the shorter the time avliable the more fun...

....however, obviously 99% of TWHLs members aren't around at any one time, so for somthing very short, it would have to be pre-organised in advance, via a forum post or IRC.
