Jesus, I feel like a total noob for asking this. But considering I just started getting dirty with the source engine, and that I've spent so much time neglecting mapping with half-life 2 - I guess I have some excuse.

For some odd reason when I click run map, it just goes into the menu screen of half-life 2. I'm not sure if this is just like half-life where you have to configure the settings to compile. But still, any help is much appreciated :).

You'd pay a massive amount more than you could... for two t-shirts and a couple of games? That's stupid.
The novelty value wouldn't be a reason I'd buy it, nor the 'fringe benefits'. The package contains more: Photoshop programs, video editing, Microsoft Office. Take your pick.

To be brief, it's a tailor made suite with candy in the pockets ;).

(and it is not a massive amount in comparison to most custom made pcs. As I specified, I'm a sucker for fringe benefits. Therefore, I could imagine I would buy it. Being in a different financial situation)
You get a T-Shirt!!?
Well that just settles it, I'm buying one right now.
Move with haste! Order while stocks last ;)

That, and the fact that Alienwares are pretty expensive for what you get.
Fair enough. As for me, well, I'm a sucker for the fringe benefits of buying things.

The Alienware apparently comes with a back catalogue of games, 2 t-shirts among other things. Still, obtaining a Alienware is becoming a popular craze. Under any other circumstance, I would be willing to pay for a retail alienware laptop....or any model cheaper than it.

Funny, when I posted this....topic, I expected people to reply with schemes similar to alienware and Ipod. Christ, use your imagination people. There are plenty of sites that host schemes like it.

But never mind, I coooouuuulllld spend half a grand on a new uber h4x0urs rig (which seems like a good idea, thank you very much fourthgen ), but considering I've sank most of my money into the indie developer thing, I have to wait until my debut is finished before I can splash out on luxuries ;).

Still, thanks for the idea. But I think I'll give the free Alienware scheme a try; still have no idea why you guys detest them, do I detect a hint of jealousy? :glad:

How appropriate, I know many people with Alienware comps who love 'em. See? That ain't good enough. I guess you don't have any real evidence then.
Funny, I'm not sure myself if this isn't something the BBC pulled out of its arse. But considering I have perhaps the slowest pc ever (can't play quake 4, thank you very much :furious:), I'm willing to give it a try.

And I have a link to the article on Ipod, if you're interested: http://news.bbc.co.uk/media/video/40101000/rm/_40101790_ipods_carver22_vi.ram

Oh, and sorry for the late reply; working on next game.

First of all, this isn't another award winning 'Win a Free IPod!' posts.
Quite the contrary; I'm asking to share experiences of things similar to it.

Right, so I just signed up to:http://alienwaregiveaway.co.uk/index.php?referral=41365. But really, are people sappy enough to believe this?.... according to BBC Newsnight, yes! Well, they said it works in some fine examples such as Ipods, watches, jewels and so forth. They claim that advertisers are willing to 'bribe' people with luxurious rewards.

A bit of a long-shot, yes. But considering that advertisers are doing literally anything to get their product across, who are we to judge them? Considering myself being in the development industry, I don't see the harm in trying new methods of marketing.

OK, enough ; what's your experience of finding things similar to it?

Now that you mentioned a debut shooter and failing getting a publisher, why don't you put it up for free? Sounds like good portfolio stuff to me. Such things can improve confidence, you know.
I agree with Captain P. Unless, you have other plans for it. If you're worrying about hosting, don't. There are plenty of places out there that would be more than willing to host a free game.
Yeah, sounds like a good idea ;). I'll look into it; once I've found someone willing to host it I'll add a link from this thread.

Tycell, thank you; I'm getting pissed off of getting advice from people who have no experience in the industry.

Before you ask, yes, I do have experience; after spending a summer working on a debut shoot 'em up and failing to find proper publishing I know what must be done to succeed.

Although I wasn't asking for advice on the grounds of posting this thread, redesigning the site is a good idea.

I'm going to stick with the hosting I've acquired although switching to a premium package, offering no ads or pop ups for that matter.

And please, no more advice or questions on my 'project'; after many attempts at making a start in the industry, I am aware of what I must do to succeed.

One more thing, is it the website that really is the bad point of my decision of becoming an independent developer?

I know it's bad, and doesn't seem professional. But really, do you think small time publishers at first glance judge because of your website?. I plan to create a small tech demo (including models, maps and aspects of the game) aswel as a document containing the positive sides of gameplay and aspects of the game that are new and refreshing.

"Enough about the site, what about the 3D engine game you are making?"

Well, I'm glad you asked :). The concept is to make a noir title that would seem both as a film and your average video game.

To go into detail, I would mean noir such as Max Payne, only, the storyline would seem similar to Max Payne (no, this isn't another repetition of a man losing his family; the situations are completely different). The setting is a different story; it revolves around fantasy.

There still are many problems facing the project: I plan to add a sense of humor for good balance - not a good idea in noir video games, It must not contain foolish cliche's - noir video games have been done once before, The storyline must make up for the poor quality models - I'm good with story lines just it has to give you the same feelings surtain video games give you.

Sorry, it seems like links are common on forums; but for some time now, I have made a attempt to make a living out of the game industry as an independent developer. And so I bring to you 3rd Age Games; a way to transfer my rough machine code into something I hope to get by with.

So for, I've built a simple 2D shoot 'em up called 'Fort Defender' (nope, it sucks before you ask) and have gave it away as part of a shareware package given away to small time publishers. Learning from my mistakes, my next project is being built on a fully 3 dimensional engine (thanks to the coding platform 'Blitz 3D').

Oh yeah, and I'm not in a spamming rage adding my link to many forums without second thought; I know the people of TWHL are a community of open minded mappers, who understand the toll of building an aspect of games (yes, I do mean mapping!).

Am i forgetting something?, oh yeah, the link is: http://3rdagegames.150m.com/INDEX.HTML
