in BEVEL vs NULL vs SKY Post #302956
Hey guys, me and Skals decided to do a little test. Some of you may remember i said in one topic that SKY is as good as / better than BEVEL/NULL.
I heard that from some Russian mappers that are quite good. I also head it fixes some light bugs i have no idea about. Many of those mappers told me i should use it and that it is better than the textures designed to reduce poly and increase performance.
So, we decided to test this mith.
We took Skalses newest map he is making for the newest Compo, the map is quite complex and large, very well made also if i may add :) , and replaced all BEVEL with SKY and all BEVEL with NULL. We compiled to check the resources ussage and performance.

I determined 4 points where i would measure wpoly count, crutial points to say so, and each time on the same spot in 3 maps.
The results were pretty interesting, some numbers were expected, some not.

These are the measurements from 4 different spots:

Bevel / Null / Sky
1336 / 1281 / 1342
896 / 876 / 896
780 / 850 / 800
1160 / 1200 / 1200

We can notice that the numbers are pretty similar, where on the most "laggy" spot in the map, null had a better performance by 55 wpoly.
In other regions null had much more wpoly, but sky and bevel were similar, where bevel was better than all three.

Now you may wonder, Stojke, Y U crazy? Sky is for sky, nothing else, you cant even use it with an entity!
But yes, you are right, but, take a look at these compile results, ive marked some interesting numbers:

First up is BEVEL, texture that removes the face completely, giving us much more performance when it comes to FPS (wpoly) and with Clipnode limit as well, but it can leave nasty bugs where you would fall trough the floor or enter a wall, which can be pretty annoying. Produces a Hall Of Mirrors effect.
User posted image
As we see, the clipnodes are reduced by a large number, as well as Light data and Text data.

--

Next is NULL, a texture that removes the face from rendering to give more performance, but eats up Clip Node limit. It doesnt produce any bugs, and its usefull as a blocking texture. Produces a Hall Of Mirrors effect as well.
User posted image
As we can see here, the clip node number is HUGE! Very bad for a big map, also we can see an increasment in Leaf Data and Text Data. Not a good choice for max performance.

--

And finally, the mysterious sky. Sky, emits light. It also blocks the player/bullets, does not create teh HOM effect, is not visible. You will find the results very interesting.
User posted image
Clip node reduction is even better than with BEVEL! It even reduces Text Data and Light Data! Some numbers are a bit higher, but thats tolerable.
Conclusion?
Sky is equaly good as Bevel and Null when it comes to reducing Wpoly, but it is also better with reducing Clip Nodes. It does not generate HOM effect, it does not generate the BEVEL bug and it also blocks the player and bullets.
Bevel is a bit better when it comes to performance, FPS, and its very good for perserving Clip nodes.
Null is as good as both when it comes to wpoly, but it is very bad when it comes to clip nodes.

This has confirmed that sky acts similar as both textures, even better in some things, a bit worse in other.
All in all, i tihnk this should be tested a bit more, perfected. Combination of both SKY and BEVEL can result in a highly optimised map.

Share your thoughts.

in How did you start mapping? Post #302939
~What made you start mapping in the first place?

As well as Rimrook, i found VHE on the game disc. It was around 2002th, i used to mess around some mario editors. I had no idea what did what mean, since i did not know a thing about english. I experimented, never knew what does what do. I paused it till 2005, where i already knew English and worked on the maps. I made some crappy maps that were local compiled, most of them had such errors it is funny when i remember now :D
My first serious map was pitch black! I had no idea why, than i noticed i had a giant skybox in the entire map. Fun times. I used to bother my brother to search for tutorials and such, and translate :D
I got ADSL in 2008 and since than i searched for tutorials, tools, RMFs of other people so i can observe them.
Gotten way better over time, than i found out about Chat bear and some Russian sites, after which i found out about TWHL ,and here i am now.

~What was your first map?

I have no idea, i do remember some of my first maps had errors from bad clipping, you could swim in some areas, in some not, they didnt even have sky, they were CSG/BSP only compiles. But my first fully functional map was named field_base and it was for Half Life deathmatch.

~Where did you get inspiration for your first map?

From playing CS and HL of course! I am madly in love with 70s/80s tech and their representation of future. Thats why i wanted to map in the first place, Half Life was my most favorite game of all time when i was a kid.

~To who did you show it & how did they react?

No one, every one was playing CS, only i was the HL player, plus, my compiles were not playable in multi player :D

~Your advace to future mappers/current mappers?

Keep on mapping, and keep on having fun with it. You have the tools to create a world people will enjoy and appreciate.

iPhone is mega overpriced, they take hardware that costs 200e shine it up by adding 100e, than they add 100e more for their shit sofrware than they add 200e more for the brand name.

But than again, lots of firms do this, but apple is really the king when it comes to overpriced things.

Mac books may be made well and with very high quality components, but for that price i can buy an IBM laptop with same spec and still have enough for a bicycle.

Also when it comes to MP3, Trekstor Organix FM is 10x better with sound than any iCrap MP3. But than again, Apple has much more memory so i cant complain much.

Wow, the map i got was super awesome, i have no words, the ending is so amazing, classic HL mapping ;_;

Makes me feel like a total bastard for forgetting...

I enjoyed my map very much, it was built well, great mapping, plus a good old HL like story. The end room was absolutely amazing, the way textures were used to present a big city when looked trough the window, the animated tv screen, WHICH MAY I ADD LOOKS VERY FAMILIAR >_> <_<, and the NES console, ooh god the NES console. I love you secret santa! ^_^

Hmm still cant quite remember who the person with a certain anime avatar was it, search mode activated!

The problem is, you start making a UNIVERSE with out knowing a thing on how to make it.

Start off by making something easy, a game with balls or something, jumping man and things like that.

There is no way for you to make any custom game like this. If you cant even make your game in RPG maker, what hope is there?

I have to agree with Archie, GoldSrC mods wont get the popularity today with new gamers...

Also, Game tracker has 30 000 CS servers in their data base (the ones that are not disqualified for using BOTs instead of players), and who knows how much more servers exist.

The problem with Dimbark is that he is taking a too large bite off of these things.

You can NOT start a project this big with out knowing a thing or two about what are you getting your self into.

First start a project about jumping cubes or some dumb thing like that, so you can get to know the environment, in which you will be making the game, a bit better.

No one is willing to help you much if you don't know what you're doing.

Also, pleez explain how you got to learn so much knowledge about GS!?
All i can say is Russians.
They have A LOT of resources on their native language web sites, plus its pretty popular there, lots of communities, lots of resources. Most, if not all, dont follow piracy rules, giving them more freedom to do what they want and improve faster.

I know a few people from the days i played CS on IgroNET, there were mappers that were ultra pro, i learned the basics from them.
And than there are people like Skaarj, and others.

Basically, lots of resources, people and freedom.

Bevel doesn't like tilted walls, or walls with a wide/sharp angle.

There have been many times i fell into the ground where bevel was applied to a tilted wall. Some times even got stuck.
