in Blurry Hammer 3Dview Post #165726
In the 3D view for Hammer, all the textures and entity sprites appear blurry (like Hl2 would on low settings). I know its not meant to happen and there is no way to change texture quality settings within Hammer.

RabidMonkey linked me to a site earlier where a guys having the same problem, the one reply he got said that if he turned anti-alaising and anistropic off it works, but thats only for Nvidia cards, im using a Radeon 9800 pro (is there a way to turn of aa and antistropics for Raedon cards (normally its set to application prefference and there is no off button).

This problem started happening after the large Hammer update not too long ago. I just reinstalled Steam too hoping it would fix the problem - it obviously didn't. I just cant get rid of this and its making lining up textures a real bitch! :x

Here's a pic of my nasty prob:

I solved a problem like this earlier - its what happens when you compile HDR lighting in HL2. HDR is not supported in HL2 yet, just CS:S DOD:S, Lost Coast etc. So just untick HDR when you compile HL2 maps, It should fix it, otherwise flush your game (type flush in the console) this can solve graphical 'anomalies'. And, cool - another HL2 mapper!

Half-Life 2 - twice, and im playing through it on SMOD now and its the most fun iv'e ever had playing a HL mod, slomo, exaggerated gibs, magic wands, psp's, gordon kick(fav), alyx gun etc. etc. Its an awesome mod.

In HL2 when you destroy an APC or Dropship container, the gibs break off on fire, but it uses a different type of fire effect, not the animated sprite but one made if many sprites that grow and rotate (like the steam effect). I am trying to reproduce this flame effect in a HL2 map and a CS:S map if possible. Does anyone know how to make it? Is it a particle script, is it possible to do it through brush entities... etc. I personally like this effect better than the standard fire and would much like to use it in my maps, especially one of the CS:S maps im currently working on. Ta for any help! :P

in What is Half-Life Post #165086
They're all scientific terms.

Half-life (explained before i know) - rate of decay for a material to half its initial size i.e. from 40 to 20 in 5 years, then from 20 to 10 in five years, 10 - 5, 5 - 2.5 etc. all in the same amount of time.

Opposing Force - any force that counters another acting force, i.e friction resists movement of tyres. Cant exactly remember the proper explanation

Blue Shift - lights change in wavelength (decrease) into the blue spectrum (i.e. blue light), an upwards shift into red light is called a 'red shift'. Also has something to do with particles(?) and electromagnetic radiation. This is a very loose explanation too as i cant exactly remember.

One of the few times i payed attention in Physics. I remember everyone thinking i was such a HL geek that as soon as we learned what Half-Life actually was every just stared at me and shook their heads, funny.

Ant, are you suggesting all Killbox-styled maps look and play shit? Not all do obviously, thats one of the reasons why fy_iceworld was so stupidly succesful it had a nice simple but easily and well playable layout - its problem is that it obviously looked shit, but if it looked awesome then it would definately be worth the download in my mind. Good looks and good gameplay, nothing wrong with that, add source physics and shaders and i'd say it would be awesome.

They do not want to play crappy maps they want to play fun maps, who the hell said fun maps had to look shit? And who the hell is talking about originality? It does not have to be original as long as it plays well and looks good. If we were all concerned about originality no one would play CS, it itself is a tried and tested formula!

J.C. you sound like an overly serious CS player, some people find simple maps fun, some dont. I like some stages simple, just because they are that way. Aim maps simplify gameplay, they are fun - obviously not to you but to many people. I myself made sandfort for CS:S, it was essentially a box with four more boxes within it, though i took time to adjust its looks, it plays well and looks well.
In terms of popularity and fun, absolutely not. Fy maps are sort of like DM for cs
sort of poison for CS I'd say, such maps just attract kind of players CS does not need...
What type of players are those? People looking to have fun. NO CS doesnt need that, it needs overly-serious players who whine about campers and spray custom decals everywhere [sarcasm btw]. Having fun is more important than testing your hopping/shooting stratergies. Simple, fun maps rule. I hate playing typical CS maps when im looking to have fun, they are too burdoning, when having fun is all you want.

Yes plenty of basic fun maps look crap, thats obvious but the well-graphiced ones that play as well as the ugly ones are both fun and good to look at - whats wrong with that? Simplicity is brilliant.
