The thing I like the most is the shapes that you used.
Your one out of a million to actually use interesting floor shapes and it really makes your map look great.

This may be korny but have you considered having a Italian boat that moves around and takes you around the back area where the bomb site lies.

Well, Internal Beta 3 was released and played!

Changes from Beta Two:
  • Library redesigned
  • Custom tile textures included (thanks dewdle)
  • Custom book textures included (thanks Rabid)
  • Road texture changed
  • Buildings redesigned on street level
  • Displacements redesigned
  • Tunnel redesigned
  • Various texture fixes
  • Various prop additions
  • Custom rock model added
  • Custom soundscape added
  • New sand texture (from dod_anzio)
  • Minor optimisation enhancements
Still a lot to do, and a bunch of errors to fix, but it was a pretty good game.

Excellent Stuff Ant! Many screenies remind me of de_plaka, which is a compliment in case you were wondering :)

Indeed, 'twas a fun game. Can't wait 'till the next version. Will there be a beta 4 or will that be the final release?
Posted 18 years ago2006-01-30 11:12:21 UTC Post #160480
I'm sure Ant wond mind (much):
Screenshots taken from the test.
Note: I didn't have the water texture used, that's why it's all wireframy.

Looks very excellent Ant. Keep the good work up :) .

Thanks for the comments guys. Its great to hear 'em on something I've worked a lot on. Its great fun to play to, so I'm glad.

Beta 4 is on hold at the moment because I found out what's wrong with my computer: dodgy RAM. Ran a memtest and it picked it up. Looks like its gonna be a little while before I get the chance to go out and pick up some new RAM.

Ahh thats too bad, I had busted RAM a few months ago, computer wouldnt even load windows in the end.

Looks brilliant, just hope I am on IRC for the next batch of testing :)

Ok, I have a few requests for assistance!

1. Texture Artist: Looking for an artist who is able to make a few unique textures for de_venice. This includes some fancy wood panelling and an assortment of banners/flags. May also include some other generic textures.

2. Modeller: Looking for a modeller who can design, skin and compile some small props models for de_venice. This includes stuff like small plaques, statuettes and other small models

If you know anyone who might be interested, or if you are interested, please drop me a line at ascarcella AT gmail DOT com. I'm really do need these positions filled (particularly the texture artist) so I can finish off de_venice and release it.

Looking good, ant. I really like how it looks.

I have only one question: Whats WIP?
Posted 18 years ago2006-02-14 08:27:01 UTC Post #163168
"Work In Progress".

I am currently keeping a Developer Diary for the map, which can be viewed here.

I shall be updating this pretty much everyday (or when I get a chance to map), so make sure you keep checking it (if you give a crap, of course).

Edit: Whoops, got a little used to XHTML. Fixed now. ;)

Can you use crows in CS:S? it would add nice ambience to the map having them fly around the joint, shitting everywhere, crowing,... generally just being birds.

How big is the download for this map going to be?
  • custom textures
  • custom models
  • custom sounds?
Not that it wouldnt be worth it though.

Posted 18 years ago2006-02-14 09:33:07 UTC Post #163172
Well, I'm fairly sure you can. I may add pigeons though, not crows, they'd suit the map more.

As for the map, Internal Beta 4 is 6 megs RAR'ed. The BSP is about 14-15 megs uncompressed. So its not too big at the moment, but that's due to the fact that its only a fast VIS/RAD compile and there's no HDR yet. Also, I'm planning to have more props and materials, so its gonna get bigger.

Very nice work. Looks like a professional default map, maybe one day a year from now, it will be a default map. But i can't say too much, i don't map source stuff yet.

By the way, as well as the help I need that I listed above, I also need Beta Testers! This time, you don't have to be on IRC to do so, just email me and I will send you the latest version (currently Beta 4 for the testers). If you wish, I can also compile a bot mesh and include that.

Anyone for HDR? Keep in mind this shot was taking during an iris adjustment, so it obviously doesn't look this bright always.

Internal Beta 5 will be up soon. This version includes a Navigation mesh! If you want to do your own testing of it, please reply. Otherwise, I'm just getting my usual batch of beta testers.

Aww, starting to look real nice man. It's too bright like this indeed, but some HDR really does the map well I think, with it's warm sunny feeling.

I've got one grip with the map so far and that's that it's mostly 90 degrees. There's some roundings but the overall directions are very straight. How about rotating some of those houses in the back and alternating that plaza edge some more?
Other than that, looking real fine. I'd like to run through this for some testing... :)

Thanks for the feedback everyone, it keeps me going!

As for the HDR: its extremly hard to capture in a screenshot. At some times it looks too bright, at some times it looks perfect. You really have to play it with it on to gauge for yourself. During last nights beta test, I don't think anyone had any concerns with the HDR (I felt that it made it look better actually).

Thanks to ZombieLoffe for hosting last nights match and providing feedback (as well as some slick screenies). I'd also like to thank Jax, Ansith and some other dude who joined the server to test.

HDR is impossible to properly showcase in static screenshots as Ant has mentioned.

Yeah. HDR simulates the iris effect when walking into areas of varying brightness. In a dark area, your eye's iris will open to let in more light. This also works vice versa (i.e. the iris will close in areas of light).

In-game, this combines with bloom to produce areas of extreme brightness which gets adjusted according to what you see. Its a pretty cool effect that actually influences gameplay - sometimes you can't see if there's an enemy ahead because its too bright, so you have to wait a few seconds for the iris to adjust.

Well then post a 30 second video because a friend showed me a video of his map in progress and I thought it looked great mainly because I could see it in action.

Given the fact that Ant is on 33k, and a 30 second video would be quite a large file, I doubt that is really an option.

My GF 4200 doesnt support HDR either. Does that mean that I would have an advantage while playing HDR maps? I dont know how that works. If it affects gameplay, it should affect everyone...
I sort of agree with Captain P's comment on the "90?-ness" of the map. I know this is an abstraction of Venice, but the real city has a much more chaotic feeling to it. You dont have to alter the layout, but change some buildings as suggested.
oh, and Venice in Italian is spelled Venezia!
Posted 18 years ago2006-03-06 22:16:37 UTC Post #166769
I suppose you might have an advantage, yes.

As for the 90 degreeness of the map, I'm actually not too sure what you mean. Keep in mind that this isn't Venice as such, its merely inspired somewhat by it. As for Venetia...thank ZombieLoffe for that. :P Heck, I should know these things...

Ah well, Venetia sounds cool.
