I'm bored of the HL wad and I'm getting fed up of using loads of other wads to get a unique looking level so I've decided to start working on my own textures.

What I need to know is what applications are best for this kind of thing. I have PaintShopPro 7 and PhotoShop CS2. Are there any other free apps out there to aid in making decent looking textures and tutorials to use aforementioned apps?

And I don't want any "OMGzorZ G00gLe n00b!" responces because I will be forced to unleash an army of angry kittens on your genitals. I want to know Your recommendations. NOT GOOGLE'S!

Cheers. :P

Yup, painter, wally, The Gimp, and another 2 or 3 of wich i cant remember the name.

Texture creation is basicly mixing photo's(as rim has shown) and drawing in details by highlighting them.

PS is the best you can get.

Just get Wally for the actual WAD creation.

So basically get photos of the desired object and add details with PS?

Fair enough.

Cheers.

Photoshop is ideal for offsetting images (so they tile) - once I've offset them

I use PS Pro 7 - I found the menu's to be less fiddly than 8 and the layering applications more manageable. And you can CTRL+C, CTRL+E from a PSP image straight into a WAD file in Wally and Wally does all the re-mipping for you.

Also look for the Golgotha texture set - this was a texture set that was made for an unfinished game and released for free download a few years ago (there are still some copies about). It features loads of useful textures that make up good base images for you to maul and fiddle with (and you will be surprised how many bits and pieces from the texture set you recognise - for instance there's textures in there that have been modified by Relic 25, some that made an appearance in Poke 646 and a lot that show up in the HL1 screenies of Nightwatch).

Not quite, photos can best be used to create a grungy overlay, most of the times i draw up the texture and then mix around a bit.

Tried my hand at re-mastering some of the HL1 textures.

Take a look and tell me what you think.

They're a good start :)

Let's see em in a map - It'd be a little bit easer to 'rate' :)

See the bottom of that thread in the link.

w00teh!

I have just created my first texture from scratch.

Your "from scratch" textures are way better than your "redux" textures! Where did the dead people models come from? - those are pretty cool too :)

So, you're practically telling him to give up because he linked to barely large images on a forum that isn't even this one?

If you think linking to 300-400k images is 'rude', then you're just being petty. I lived with 56k internet for years, loading up images a hell of a lot larger and never complained over such a stupid thing, and definately without alluding to the idea that someone should just 'give up' because of it.

hahaha, 'obscenely large'
10mb images are 'obscenely large'
1mb+ are 'large'
500kb is 'fine'
anything under is 'small'

Muhahaha I have 10 Mbps cable. It took longer to find and click the download links for the map cycle on Muzzleflash's server than it it did to download them. 684KB files done in one second.

Why do you upscale the textures like that? All that detail is just going to be lost when you resize it, which you'll have to do if you want to put them in a map.

Stop whining about large images and get with the times, you stone-age man. Anything below broadband is so 1990's. Whiner.

In fact, I think we should encourage large images (2 megs plus - the bigger the better!) to somehow mock and mess with the 56k people, in our utter broadband superiority. Ha.

Resolving this would be making dial-up people get a decent connection.

I find it amusing that a thread on texture creation can evolve into something so very petty.

As such, any further off-topic posts from mine will be deleted.

@l1ddl3monkey: They are the hostages from CSS. Shame I didn't have my Scientist skins on them when I took the screenie :(

@Orpheus: Sorry. I shall slap 56k warning across it next time.

@Ant: Thank you.

It's nice, yet there is a lot to be done! The sign still doesn't seem real enough. It looks 2 dimentional. I would expect the text to be extruded inward a bit and at the lower sides the with line should be darker at parts.

Try using photo shop magnificent fiture- blend modes. Right click on the layer and choose blend options.

A window will apear with all the blending modes at the left side and on the right side the mode's configurations.
There are quite a few mode you should know of. Lighten only shows the parts of the layer that are brighter then the pic below, and darken is just the oppisite.
Exturde is quite self exploitery, it darkens and lightens that edges of the visible parts in the layer making them look like they are extruded, inward or outward, your choice. This is the mode you should have used in the sign.

Hope this helps. :)

hmm... that sign is wierd with the KinetiX Labs written the way it is on it. I don't think a sign would ever look that way.

But, if the lab was called Kineti, it might be kinda cool. Then have KinetiX as is Kineti 10 in roman numerals. Then you can have surrounding labs like KinetiXI and KinetiVIII. Much like City 17 from HL2. It would bring some depth to it, if thats not whats already planned.

Kineti sounds like some sorry british place to me. I sense potential. :D

Hey rimrook, I remember you posted a little explanation about making costum textures from sketch. I remember you created an ugly looking texture that was quite simple to make and then used a overlay pic to make it look better. Can you post is again? It'll help me a great deal.

Another thing, where do you get your overlay pics? Don't tell me google because I simply don't really know what to search for. If you tell me google give me an example for what should I look for. Thanks in advance.

@Elon: I didn't want the letters to be extruding. Its just a standard British sign.
