Oh I'm very familiar with the northern(New Yawkars drink cawfee) and southern(cue banjo) but I thought there was also just a generic American accent, kinda like the generic British accent. Most of the people I know here and on the other side of the US when I lived in California for a few years didn't have an accent at all as far as I could tell. They just kinda... talked.

Would it be possible for anyone here to describe the American accent?To put a quick example. Words that end with the letter "r" are pronounced differently in American and UK English. For example 'Winter' is pronounced 'wintr in the U.S, but in the UK it is 'wint? with a final undetermined vowel (or however you call that. I used to know how to write phonetics...)

It might be true, but that's one of the main differences that foreigners see between both. I lived two years in California, and the English sounded very different to UK english.
Just take any film, and in minutes you can tell if the actors are mostly American or British.

You don't win debates and this wasn't a debate so yeah, no. Regarding this thread and December 7, sure, let whoever they want make threads about whatever they want. I mean, no one has more or less "right" to celebrate days or honour memories or whatever. This is an open forum. It's interesting to think what the reactions would've been if it were a small European country's holiday, though.

Is this so?Apart from November 11th (end of either WWII or WWI, i forget which), which is pretty much universal in Europe, Britain doesn't have that many memorial days, at least not as far as i can remember. We have Guy fawkes night, but thats more "lets burn him" thing.

Well, you should have given some more info for us that dont keep record of the history of U.S.A. Otherwise i dont quite mind, though i doubt it really fits in a forum, it is more ir less a journal thingie.

I don't remember anyone posting a remembrance thread here, no. Some debates and shit, yes, but not really anything to honour the dead. Just doesn't seem to fit well on an international forum. What's the point, anyway? Honouring would mean throw a parade or wear a button on your jacket, not to create threads that no one should post in.

It's a valid topic of conversation. The general board is for general discussion for everyone, not solely for topics about modding or gaming. It's not just for Europeans or Americans or anyone else. You can talk about whatever the fuck you want in here (within reason), and I think this is easily within reason. I don't see why not. You guys can have threads about your national days of rememberance and I wouldn't go bash them - I don't really think they serve a purpose but it's still a valid topic of conversation.
