For those of you that don't know yet, Poke646 (HL1 mod) has been released. Visit www.poke646.com to download and play the mod. Make sure to play the first one too if you haven't already.

Yup, got it a few days ago... the mapping is bloody stunning (well, at least the detailing and looks)... makes me jealous.

Wow, Vendetta is finally out? That thing has been in production for years!

I don't think it was actually being worked on for a long time, more like they just wrapped it up and released it after several years, without as many maps as was probably planned. It's kinda evident from the length of it, in my opinion.

I loved the mod and I never realised a HL1 map could look so good...Now when I see HL1 maps I compare them to the maps in that mod.

Very short but utterly brilliant.

Visually very impressive, but the gameplay was just more of the same. Funny story, though, and overall I'm not disappointed. Very good humor all throughout, too. :)

Just played it, 'twas disappointing.
The recycled areas don't look any better then they did in the original. When you compare them with the new locations, the quality is up and down. Stort was ok, but the gameplay was dull and the boss is exactly the same. Just play the spaceship part then quit i say.

having never played the original, i found this thuroughly enjoyable. It was probably longer than Blue Shift, for those who say it's too short.

Very cinematic.

This mod is awesome.

I never played the original, but that didn't really matter.
The architecture, the textures, the lighting, the weapons.... just brilliant.

Nothing new in gameplay, but heh, I don't see that as a bad thing. Whole lot of humor aswell. 'Barney Calhoun - How I survived Black Mesa', that really made me laugh. ;)

I sorta noticed 2 bad things.
The grass in Nation City sounded like hard cement when you walked on it and I found another bug in Nation City. I could get behind the city. They forget to make a certain part unpassable.

I'm not much of a SP guy, so I haven't played many SP mods, but this certainly hits my top SP mods list.

I find it kind of sad that they actualy use the original HL1 monsters... Im SICK of that. Otherwise it was pretty much a waste of time, the maps looked pretty good but that's about it.

Spoiled brat.

So what if they used original HL1 monsters?
That shouldn't ruin the fun, should it?

FPS shooters are 80% the same.
You can't consider this a bad thing.
They are made for what they're made.

Besides, there was an additional monster boss (which I killed easily by launching grenades at it from inside one of the containers)

Isnt that the same one in the original poke646?
Posted 17 years ago2006-12-30 18:01:34 UTC Post #207966
yeah but this one you actually had to fight yourself.
i just took all 7 of my pipebombs and threw them at him at the same time.
GREAT storyline, from the both of them. It was a bit short (vendetta) but i loved the level design. I thought it was source before i remembered it wasnt. (??lol) Yeah, and i think they re-skinned the vortiguants and maybe the alien grunts...

I liked it tho.

FresheD, you're getting me all wrong here, I think it's fine to use the old enemies. I wouldn't mind shooting the Quake2 enemies back to hell over and over and over again, I would love it. But the HL1 monsters suck! I want to kill people, not 3 legged dogs without heads! And no mo headcrabs! They are dull and look funny. HL1 monsters FTL.
Posted 17 years ago2006-12-31 04:52:25 UTC Post #208026
Well half-life's only been around for NINE YEARS.
Unless someone codes it, we aint gettin new enemies to blast.

Quake 2 is older than HL1, and the monsters in it were the lose, if you ask me. In fact, I think most monsters that come out of ID games are pure loseness, 'cause they generally lack any originality, and just go for more gore.

And Tetsu0, it's not actually a whole nine years. I think it was released sometime near the end of 1998. It doesn't make a difference, but makes me feel like what I'm modding all the time isn't COMPLETELY obsolete.
yeah but this one you actually had to fight yourself.
Oh really? Well, I sure didn't! Hell that was the easiest boss fight I've (n)ever fought, but I'm pretty sure I didn't do it the right way. When the door raised up to let the robot through, I just ran underneath it and pressed the button. Before that, I had tried to kill it with all the ammo I had on me, but it didn't work. :/
Posted 17 years ago2006-12-31 05:09:35 UTC Post #208028
Quake 1 was also awesome and it was truly original. And there was nothing like Quake 2 around when it came out, so don't you call the stroggs unoriginal!
Posted 17 years ago2006-12-31 05:14:00 UTC Post #208030
And there was nothing like Half-Life when it came out either, so what's your point?
Posted 17 years ago2006-12-31 05:15:44 UTC Post #208031
My point is that HL1 monsters aren't fun. And Quake 1 and 2 where original.
Posted 17 years ago2006-12-31 05:18:42 UTC Post #208032
Well, I suppose it's just a matter of opinion, then. I find nothing boring about them, yet I do find a bunch of bloody hunks of gore running straight at you without any AI to be. :
Posted 17 years ago2006-12-31 05:28:37 UTC Post #208033
Haha, yeah, the AI in Quake 2 is pretty funny :P But Im raised up with Wolf, Doom, Quake all those mighty fine ID games. And it's the action in those games that are the thing you know. Demons stright from hell in doom, half men half machines in Quake, evil nazi?s in Wolf. And I do mean the first Wolf. Plain awesomeness.

But HL1, I don't know... They are so colorfull! Small round doglike things with three leggs and fishlike skin, two legged oysters with red tentacels...
And the headcrabs is stolen from the alien moveis! Exepct for one thing, the alien face huggers where scary! They where fast and intelegent. Head crabs look like a slow mix of a hamster and a tick. And I've always been a zombie fan. So understand my disapointment when I saw the HL1 zombies. They aren't brought back from the dead to feed on the flesh and brains of the living, they are just being controlled by the headcrab!

Understand me now?
You may not agree but you got to understand what I mean here.
Posted 17 years ago2006-12-31 05:40:04 UTC Post #208034
I understand what you mean, but... Well, not really. I don't see at all how a zombie is dull because it's being controlled by a Headcrab instead of by some strange power that wouldn't make any sense with the rest of the game's storyline. And I don't understand why you think the monsters being colorful is less attractive than them being all gory. That's just the way they were designed, and they're different games, designed with different things in mind.
Posted 17 years ago2006-12-31 05:44:50 UTC Post #208035
HL1 just ain't my type of game, I like it dark and bloody you know. But HL1 is awesome to customize. That?s where my love for HL comes in! :D
Posted 17 years ago2006-12-31 06:23:41 UTC Post #208037
That's kinda what I thought, about you liking dark, gory games better.

To tell you the truth, those ID games always felt depressing to me for some reason. Quake 4 was pretty good at making that feeling go away, having friendly soldiers and all, but they still stuck you in all kinds of weird places, all on your own...
Posted 17 years ago2006-12-31 07:02:10 UTC Post #208039
Tosse, you actually fail at life. Just die, thx.

You clearly never played HL1 until reasonably recently or else you would understand the true magic that is HL.

You don't like them? Fine, that's your opinion.
But that doesn't mean they suck for the rest of the people.
HL1 just ain't my type of game, I like it dark and bloody you know
HL isn't really made to be scary.
The graphics are to bad to make it look scary anyway, HL is the game of puzzles, suprise attacks from headcrabs and BOEM BOEM HEADSHOT!
They are so colorfull!
Again, you can't count that as a bad thing.
HL monsters are cool. They're original, fit it in with the theme and cmon, making them explode in yellow gibs is priceless. :)

Doom and Half-Life are different games from each other.
Doom and Quake have magic of their own and so does Half-life.
You clearly never played HL1 until reasonably recently or else you would understand the true magic that is HL.
Amen!

..

Now lets talk about Poke646: Vendetta again :P

I haven't downloaded it yet. TBH it's the first time I hear about it!

Are there any memorable or interesting places in this mod? If so, I will give it a try and maybe get some ideas for my recently revived Star Trek SP story.

The spaceship level is breath taking.
Nation City looks decent, few bugs in this one.
The last level looks sweet aswell. :)

I woulda liked to do more stuff on xen to tell the truth. In then intro to the second one i was hoping there was a storyline that happened on xen as well, but it was still a kickass game.

A very nice mod. The spaceship textures were specially neat.

Did any one else think "Max Payne" while looking around Nation City? It even had a secret underground base! :D

Excellent mapping to be sure (I've only played the intro), but I must say I don't enjoy the puzzles/gameplay of SP maps much anymore in general--I always end up noclipping/impulsing my way to the end.

I'm going to try to play this one through anyway, since it looks so great. I lol'd at the alt fire for the pistol :)
