I like both... every time one of the two games pisses me off... I say to my self: "I'm never gonna map for this game again".... and then there I am a few days later;D

some people seem to be forgetting that you CAN still map shittily using brushes in source if you really want to. nobody's stopping you.

"omg props ruin the game" is the lamest excuse ever. props are just pieces of complex brushwork. it takes less time aligning them then it would to make it from scratch.

so stfu, you hl1'ers.

HL1 mappers get bad reviews and generally have the shit flamed out of them for using prefabs yes?

Props in HL2 are basically fancy prefabs with physics yes? I say, if I play a map with a prop thats been used in HL2 I can flame the arse off of the mapper.

Any moron can create a detailed room and drag and drop in the details. It takes skill to make something look good from scratch.

So basicly your claiming that every random noob can make a room fill it with props and it looks good? Damn, you fail. You really fail.

Who says source maps don't have complex brushwork?
That makes no sense. Just because we have props we don't have complex brushwork?

Props create interactivity (I guess that's the word..).
They have physics. The physics are a huge part of source.

Seriously, if you overuse props then your map will look quite busy and interactive, but that doesn't mean it looks and plays good.

HL2 needs just as much planning as HL1.
You can't just make a room and add some props..

HL1 and HL2 each have their charm.

hl2 is hl1 with heaps of awesome new features.

and the 'hammer 4 crashes' excuse doesn't work either, ever since 4.1, hammer is much more stable. in fact, it hasn't crashed once for me since the 4.1 update. and yes, it does take a bit of memory, but if you can play hl2, you have enough.
...with 1GB of ram I've had azureus, firefox, VS.NET2005, hammer and Hl2 all running and my pc still runs fine. (cpu is four years old too)

In my humblest of opinions, Half-Life 2 is way harder to map for. You have to think about more stuff. I don't really have anything against props, even though I suck at using them, but I still find HL mapping more enjoyable.

Yeah, that's true. With more possibilities, expectations are higher. Unless you go for an abstract, stripped-down style of mapping (or a sloppy style :P), HL2 maps just take more time.

displacements and I/O, etc. save time tho, so they equal out mostly.

Strange, Highlander, that's actually the reason I dislike Half-Life 2 so much. I enjoyed the Black Mesa setting far more than Eastern Europe. Black Mesa just tended to have more diverse settings, and in HL2, it seemed to kind of blend together...

I'd have to say that the games are about equal to each other in their own right, but I still prefer HL to HL2.

people still map with quake 1 and so forth so i dont see any reason why people should disgard HL1, it was game of the year in 1998, has plenty of mods, a very simple and interactive editor, and well, you can be as creative as you like! unlike some editors (Delta force etc) have the objects and stuff set out for you already, that limits what you can DO with the game and editor.

You can tell Half-Life was made from Quake in several places. One is the fact that at the top of every .cpp and .h file in the SDK is that is says "This code is licensed from Id (The creators of Quake)". Also, if you play Quake, look at the explosion and teleporter effects, look familiar? Of course they do, they use the same little round particles that the leak line does. Spirit took advantage of the fact that there was still Quake code in Half-Life, thats how it creates those special effects.

By the way, I believe you can now get Quake 1, 2 and 3 in a bundle pack at some computer stores. So those who haven't played Quake 1, get it! (Hopefully it's XP compatible now, it used to only work on 95!)
