Yeah, that WAD really contains the source code to the Skynet control software. Releasing it to the public would undoubtedly unleash Armageddon on all members of TWHL.

The lighting needs something to spice it up.
And the supports being hollowed just to let through a few pipes don't look too realistic.

Yeah, those screens are kinda icky. Instead of the hollowed supports, just have the pipes go straight through. Also, improve the walkway by adding some trim to the grating. It looks all funny where the rail meets it.
Posted 17 years ago2007-01-21 07:59:29 UTC Post #210095
You're wrong. You can see the edge of another door frame on the right side of the grunt in the first picture, and It's a battery and a grenade, not just two batteries. :
Posted 17 years ago2007-01-21 09:27:08 UTC Post #210100
Personally I like the last 2 more than the first 2.

They remind me of frenzy.
Posted 17 years ago2007-01-21 10:12:34 UTC Post #210101
I also see 2 batteries behind the soldier. Try placing items where it's likely to find them, not on high walkways and in long halls.

Also, the walkway seemingly serves no purpose for being there. Maybe have a locked door beside the grunt?
That walkway is a secret area. And there IS a locked door beside the grunt. The trick is openning that door and figuring out how to get up there if you want to get to the secret items (Which aren't really very secret, but still.. :) )

The door you see in the shot, behind the grunt is not accessable. The one beside the grunt off-shot is the one that you can get through.

why would they have high power HEV batteries lying around?
to prevent infiltrators, who by stunning coincidance, are wearing HEV suits from running out of power :P

Half-life and realism? That makes no sense.
Posted 17 years ago2007-01-21 13:56:54 UTC Post #210118
The grenade is behind the soldier, obviously it functions as some backup ammo in case he should run out, but why the battery? Grunts have no use for them. Why would the grunt bring the battery up there?
Its obvious that you dont even know the half-life's basics, my friend.

First of all, they are not just a normal marine you see in the battlefield. They are the marines of the Hazardous Environment Combat Unit(HECU) and they are also wearing a special vest called P.C.V (Powered Combat Vest) which is very similar to H.E.V . And guess what? They are charged with batteries.

Indeedy.

Though the grenade & battery could be placed on an ammo crate, somewhere under the grating for realism.

Indeed, or a locker in the wall would also work well.

P.S. Still want me to do the costum weapons or not?

Well, I'm currently re-making my chapter.

The final map will be split into two ones, since it's pretty massive.
I'll be posting some media this week..

YO
manicantdothis, why did you do that? Why did you type that word and press "post"?

I was so stunned by the uselessness and stupidness of that post that I forgot what I was going to type. You ruined my post.

Why did you do that? Why would you mess around in these forums, messing with people's threads and posts? You shouldn't do that. People could get angry and come over to your house and rape you. And for very good reasons too. People wouldn't rape you for that juicy ass of yours, no. People would rape you for the bad, evil and rotten things you do.

You don't deserv to be here.
YO
...You should be in shame over yourself. Don't you hate yourself? I hate you.

Nice Hunter! I think the hollowed supports are fine if not a little bit unnaturally thin--afaik I've never seen a concrete structure so thin like that. Just make it a little thicker imo.

Can't wait to see some more screens!
Posted 17 years ago2007-01-21 23:29:10 UTC Post #210166
Personaly I can't find anything wrong with the hollowed out supports, they look cool like that. Maybe some other textures wouldn't hurt, and some more deatail. But you're on the right track.
Posted 17 years ago2007-01-22 01:35:00 UTC Post #210179
Concrete has strength with weight shooting straight down on it, but not as a thin support structure like that cocked at an angle--even reinforced, it would barely hold itself up, let alone the ceiling!

I think it looks cool too, just a tad unrealistic is all.
Posted 17 years ago2007-01-22 12:51:04 UTC Post #210220
ok, i'll change the damned support collumn =D

Posted 17 years ago2007-01-22 15:49:16 UTC Post #210243
Lol, whats wrong with that support collumn? The one where that pipe goes through? I think it adds a little more depth!

Agreed.
Posted 17 years ago2007-01-22 16:17:23 UTC Post #210248
It would work as a metallic structure, but not concrete. Pipes are added after the primary structure of a building is done, so it's strange to see them crossing a support. The source mod "Rock 24" and the base map I did for the "destructification" compo also had their share of pipes embedded in pillars. In order to do that, you would need to make the holes with a hydraulic hammer which is a bit messy :D
I would either change the texture or find another way to hold those pipes (look at the compo 20 base map for ideas). Structural concrete is almost always reinforced with steel, which would be impossible in the thin part seen in the screenshot.

Well, rowleybob had a similar opinion. They look good aesthetically, but are not realistic. That's why a simple texture change from concrete to metal would work IMO.

regarding custom textures

Please prefix all custom textures which will end up in hostage_situation.wad with "hs_"
(hs_wall1b)

i only want to have to ship one wad with HS, so instead of using other people's wads, just take the textures you're going to use from them, and put them in your own .wad. This will make putting them all in one .wad at the end much easier.

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE AUTHOR'S PERMISSION TO USE THEIR WADS

also:
media :o (i'm getting good at releasing lots of this :P)

looks MUCH MUCH BETTER and cool. Despite the fact that I liked the media and the screenshots but my opinion would be not to waste your valuable screenshots so much. I mean save some for the players. They want it and you give it right away :P Of course its not bad, but I wouldnt spoil them so much ( lol ) anyway its up to you to decide.

Some comments:
  • Scuba guy looks high
  • Beret guy looks good
  • Cigar guy has one hell of a mullet. If you use these you might want to fix the hair (parallel relative to top of head)
  • The masked shotgun guy looks too HL.
P.S. Some people went beserk over the 1337 model for CS. We were suppose to expect riots and the start of WW3 (/cue CNN news clips of armed idiots prancing around in Dakalakastan). Nothing happened.
Posted 17 years ago2007-01-24 20:45:12 UTC Post #210478
That's not a scuba guy. Why would there be a scuba grunt, when they can't even swim? Anyway, I think they look great. It's really starting to look much more like a mod than a map pack. W00t for that.
