Showcase and share your selfmade textures!

Made some textures, but never used them in your maps? Showcase them here and make them available for everyone!

I personally suck at texture making, but sometimes i give it a try, so here are some of my crappy one's i never used:

Gah! Pressed refresh while typing my reply...

I started texturing not too long ago and tried reskinning a HL2 NPC for my horror map. Since it wont see the light of day you can see it here: http://www.habboi.co.uk/2dgallery.shtml

Also you can see my poor attempts in the past here: http://www.habboi.co.uk/textures

Making textures can be quite fun though.

The lava texture isn't just the default one from DMC, it's been edited a bit. As for the textures with the swirling clouds... see if you can figure out what those were for. ;)

Edit: Yes, BMP. These are for others to use, right?

I've also created some other decal sets for Black Mesa for areas that require some paper clutter, posters, etcetera.

We should probably make a Texturing Tips thread, like our Mapping Tips thread. I think we would get some valuable information out to the public.

They all tile in some direction. Seeing as I don't really map for goldsource anymore i'm eventually going to release them and many more i've made in a big wad.

And yes, some of them are edited from famous wads.

Nice volcanic textures there, srry! I might have a use for them in the level I'm currently working on; if I use 'em I'll credit you (and let you know!)

As for textures I've made: nothing really worth speaking of. Level-specific signs, mostly, and a couple of textures built from other people's images for a specific purpose... And I made a tiled floor texture from a digital photo of my own tiled floor -- but then it got deleted from the level I'd used it in ('cos the room in which I'd used it had to go, for space reasons...)

These look really good for Goldsrc. How are they made? Is it difficult?
Posted 16 years ago2007-07-18 08:56:20 UTC Post #229448
I work with Fireworks and Photoshop. I've got an archive of about 1000 free textures/photos etc. from which I mix and match, blend together and so on. I then use things like the burn and dodge tools, and contrast and saturation to add depth and highlights.

I guess it's sort of up to having a good eye for details, I don't really know tbh. I'm never really happy with how the contrast turns out in my textures.

@darkphoenix: I'd love it if you used them. I got 'em from pictures I took at the Grand Canyon, and it would be good to see that they went to some use.

Yeah, the last two in the first of my pics are edited from submerged.wad to look less like plastic and more like metal.

Hey, Daubster, I recognise the first three of yours as being for coldcase. That map was done too, until my computer had a hard drive failure. :( Sorry they never got used.

As for my own textures, I'll post the one to three I have made when I find them....

Hoshi, sorry to hear bout the failure.
No problem bout them not being used, twas pretty interesting making them. I'll just probably include them in a texture pack or something. :)

EDIT: I fixed the colors and rotated a copied layer, and it made this nifty brick pattern.

EDIT2: I painted this one a moment ago. If you have photoshop, you can see how its pretty much made. Even though I feel stupid collapsing the first two layers (initial brick lines and the base crete texture.)

Use photoshop to. Offset the image and repair the edges. Don't ask me how because I've never done texture work in Photoshop, only Paint Shop Pro. (A habit that I must get out of)

To repair the edges in photoshop, use the "heal brush" and you can sample other parts to repair the seams. It automatically blends to match so work is minimal.

A better way is to use the High-Pass filter under other in the filters. it allows you to cut arbitrary light from your image. doing this before you heal makes the job much easier. if you do it this way, make the high-passed image a layer above your original and switch the mode to "luminosity" to correct light but not color. Flatten then offset and heal.

hope that made sense...
