Long-winded Prologue
We've had loads of quality maps and mods in the Map Vault no matter when they were posted. From short but unique experiences to the most epic mods you remember a long time after playing, each one of them added to the bustling and growing database, showing how TWHL helped some of the now-skilled or even legendary mappers.
So, if current creations recieve awards for excellence, it's only fair to do the same with the older stuff, especially when there's such loads of quality work to choose from.
Here's how it all works:

Best of 2003-2006
Having to point out one creation from over a thousand available is quite a challenge, so instead - you are to choose 5 submissions you find worthy, list them from the very best to still worthy of winning and post them here (each will get 1-5 points according to their position in your list).
The Top 3 maps will all recieve extensive reviews, while the authors get their awards and a load of praising upon. ;)

Best of Rules:
? The entry must have been posted in the Map Vault's completed maps section by its respective author between and including 07-06-2003 and 31-12-2006. (from cs_canbunk to krAzY)
? You can vote for 3 to 5 entries.

As for 2007 - MotY voting will be held to determine the best of this year.

Map/Mod of the Year, 2007
Same as above, only you get to vote for 3 submissions instead of 5. Only one winner here.

MotY Rules:
? The entry must have been posted in the Map Vault's completed maps section by its respective author between and including 01-01-2007 and 31-12-2007. (from fy_magic_fountain to de_dome)
? You can vote for 1 to 3 entries.

Rules applied for both MotY and Best of..
? You can't vote for a map/mod you've posted.
? You may only vote for a map from HL1/HL2/EP1/EP2 or one of their respective official mods. (Portal, HLDM/HL2DM, CS/CS:CZ/CS:S, DoD/DoD:S, TFC/TF2, BS, OpFor) or Spirit. (applies to maps only).
However, if a map was made for a non-official mod (e.g The Specialists, Natural Selection), which is currently available for download - you can vote for it too.
? You can vote for previous MotM or Competition winners.
? You can update/change your vote any time, so don't hesitate.

When voting - be sure to let us know what you're nominating the maps for (MotY or Best of, bolded or colored if you can).

Example votes
MotY
Mod A <-- Recieves 3 points
Map B <-- Recieves 2 points
Mod C <-- Recieves 1 point

Best of
Map X <-- Recieves 5 points
Mod Y <-- Recieves 4 points
Map F <-- Recieves 3 points
Map T <-- Recieves 2 points
Mod W <-- Recieves 1 point
You can also vote for less than 5 or 3 submissions..
Best of
Map A <-- Recieves 5 points
Mod B <-- Recieves 4 points
Mod D <-- Recieves 3 points

MotY
Mod Z <-- Recieves 3 points
We'll be accepting multiple guest reviewers for both competitions, chosen randomly from everyone who's voted here.
Hope I made the rules clear enough. These ones really count, so do take part. :^_^:
[m]May the voting begin![/m] :hammer:

P.S: Merged Best of 2003-2006 and Map of the Year 2007 in one thread to avoid spamming the forum with MotM stuff. If having both in one thread's too confusing - let me know, I'll split it up.

P.P.S: Don't forget about MotM: December! :>

I'm putting a crap-ton of effort into my current map. More than any other i have to say :)

I'll have to have a browse thru the map vault.

Btw, it's sad not to have Kasperg's maps in the vault, he made quite few, that turned out to be my favs :(

I know my decisions aren't necessarily the most popular ones, but here we go...

#1 - Life's End
While Life's End has questionable quality at points, isn't as polished as I'd like, and is by no means native to TWHL, for me it's still the most epic, enjoyable mod ever to be brought to to this site... even if I didn't first find it here. :)
#2 - Uplink Extended
Undeniably one of the highest quality mods of all time in the map vault, Muzzleflash's remake of Uplink has all the details you'd expect from a present-day map, and it brings you back to the time you first played that demo, just without the feeling that there was something missing graphically.
#3 ? Orb (Compo 20)
While technically not as impressive as numbers four and five, this did one thing that those two didn't: it left me gaping. I have never before in my life seen an entity setup so complex and beautiful as this.
#4 ? Kaufmann House
Well, Despite Kasperg recently leaving TWHL after creating quite a mess, this still deserves a place in Map of the Year in my opinion. Not only is it the one link to TWHL to be featured in a magazine (!!!), but it was really the defining effort of one of our most remembered mappers.
#5 ? Sunden
This was really just thrown in here because I had no other candidates for fifth place, although that's not to say it isn't an impressive effort. It really opened my eyes up and showed me that open-ended outdoor areas were in fact possible in Half-Life, and it?s a great example of it.

For 2007? I have no idea, yet.

I really didn't know this until just now.

On topic -

I'm going to try to vote, but there is so much to look at. I couldn't vote without seeing it all. What if I found a map I liked better after voting?

I'll try and look at everything, but I don't know if I'll have time.

You really don't have to do that.. unless you haven't played much maps from the MV. Just try remembering what you enjoyed the most, play it again, if necessary and vote. :>
You can change it later anyway.

Heh, I was shocked at my results..

1. HL: Uplink Extended 1.0.
This mod is pure quality. I was suprised this ended up at 1 in my list tho. I've played a whole lot of better stuff than this, but shockingly, they either came from Kasperg or other sites.
2. Intake.
I've played better DM maps than this, even on TWHL, BUT, this map was the first DM map that really showed me how nicely you can use HL textures, so it has speceal meaning for me. Besides that, it's a great map.
3. Carbaseus.
The first time I played this map, I was simply amazed.
While gameplay is doubtable, the architecture is lovely.
4. Ruled By Insanity.
A great compo entry. I was quite impressed.
5. Gungod.
I've had so much fun on this map when Muzz hosted a HLDM server for TWHL. It just deserves mentioning.

If Kasperg didn't remove all his maps, he would have 3 outta 5 in my list. I didn't look at CS maps or HL2 stuff. I'm not interested in CS and for HL2 I rather visit sites that focus on HL2. I find it hard to measure goldsource stuff to source engine stuff anyway.

I can't play Timefall btw, the download is broken.

EDIT: Wow, I have edited this post 5 times!!

No offence, but MINIMICUS's mapping wasn't that spectacular. The idea and technique behind it was great, but mapping (the architectural part of it, not entity work) wasn't that great. It was mostly bland, flat and stretchy.

Don't get me wrong, i enjoyed it, gameplay wise.

Haha, getting scared Muzzles? :nya:

I do agree tho. Minimicus was a mod with a nice plot, and I really enjoyed it. But I found it short and everything looked kinda plain.

And I'm suprised about Life's End, I actually stopped playing Life's End after a while because I didn't enjoy it. The general level design of Life's End was poor aswell.

But heh.. Different people, different tastes. :crowbar:
