Terry Pratchett. He wrote a very popular series of books on a place called the Discworld. I haven't read them myself, but I remember the animated series they made from it and I know the books are pretty well-loved.

I could say the same about Garth Nix, and I doubt many people here have heard of him, and I know that not everyone would like his work. I think Hunter only said that because the author isn't well known in America, and I guess he is in other parts of the world. I don't think there was an underlying message that we're all stupid or something.
