Inspired by "Favourite films". So, which was the last movie you saw and what did you think about it?

Mine was a japanese movie called "Pulse" (aka Kairo). In a nutshell it's about a website on which you can see real ghosts. Whoever visits the website will commit suicide. Pulse follows the standard J-horror template, which today is starting to get a bit old, but it was released in Japan in '99 I think so I can't really hold lack of originality against it. The camerawork is pretty interesting, and it has some subtle details like how the streets become more and more deserted as the movie goes on, symbolising isolation and depression. I don't know if some things were lost in translation or whatever, but I had trouble following the plot from time to time. All in all an okay movie, though not good enough to warrant the cult following I've heard it has in Japan. 4.5/10

Gamer (2009)

One of the worst movies i've seen for 2009. This movie/plot/directing
are way below Gerard Butler. So bad i was going to leave halfway and
try to get my money back... (i should have)

5 Centimeters per Second
Saw it yesterday and would give it a solid 7/10. Would have been 8/10 but the ending was really abrupt.
"Told in three interconnected segments, we follow a young man named Takaki through his life as cruel winters, cold technology, and finally, adult obligations and responsibility converge to test the delicate petals of love."
Yeah, it was a chick flick. Whatever, it was on my weeaboo list for a long time and I decided to make this an weeaboo weekend.

Also mad lulz on Gamer.

The Bourne Supremacy

Quite a good movie, one of the best of its kind in my opinion (better than Hitman anyway). Although I still liked the first one better.
I especially like how he has a couple of original tricks up his sleeve other than just the usual stuff you see in all these movies.
It's no James Bond but all in all it's a good movie, I think it deserves an 8.5/10.

The movie with Nicholas Cage? Something about the apocalypse and stuff? I remember seeing a trailer about half a year ago.
So it wasn't good then?

The films big 'twist' ending makes Indiana Jones IV's look like a masterpiece. I'll leave it at that.

Got another one: Harry Potter and the order of the phoenix.

An alright movie but they cut tons of stuff out, more so than the other films did (at least as far as i remember). All in all an entertaining movie worth watching if you like the other films in the series. 6.5/10

And I've got yet another one: Martyrs

A french horror film made in 2008, Martyrs centers around two girls named Lucy and Anna. In the first scene of the film, a young Lucy escapes from a dark room where she has been held captive and tortured. What happens afterwards is all related to that experience but there are a few twists in the film. I can't really write anything else about the story because that would just ruin it.

I usually don't have trouble watching horror movies, but there are some scenes in this movie that are just gutwrenching to watch. It's not the kind of scary-thing-jumps-out-from-the-shadows fear that is so common in the genre, it's more angsty. You really feel sorry for the victims. I highly recommend this film, just be prepared. :) 10/10

I saw Halloween 2 in the theater last Friday. Not much to say about it. I didn't really even care to go see it, but my girl did. It's better suited to be a friday-night at home movie that you rent cheap. I don't think it was worth the $8 tickets.

It's supposed to. It's all about intolerance and injustice.

And hey, lets face it, without spoiling too much - there's a fair bit of "justice" dished out toward the end, no?

Techinically a movie, right? It exeeded my expectations, even with the cheesy...everything... The actors seemed to be okay, but I couldn't hear most of the dialouge because of the background noise.

Don't get me wrong, it's still bad, just bad in a vaugely amusing manner. I'd recomend it for anyone who's interested in the behind-the-scenes stuff of the HL series, if only as a curiosity.

Maybe a (short) mod could be done with that theme instead? I always thought it might be fun to try, although I kinda feel I need an actual story to put into it.

Edit: I had never seen that video. Brrr... at least they tried to hide it from the world's eyes.

You could always use the same basic premise, but not screw it up completely like they did :) Just use more combat, less Sound FX that drown out everything else, and Blue Shift arms.
The camera would be head mounted... Yeah... Head mounted.

Saw 9 last night.
It was a 9-oclock showing in theater 9 on 9/9/09.
Other than that, the movie was hy7ped more-so than it should have. I went in with high expectations and left with a less than satisfying taste in my mouth.

The acting was mediocre at best, and the plot progressed faster than it should've. Another 30 minutes and a better actor for the main character would've made it much better.

Nonetheless, good cinematics and was definitly entertaining / disturbing at parts.

7/10

Taking woodstock was just plain wierd. Went in expecting a pot-filled woodsotck festival, and it wasnt at all. The preview mis-lead this movie so much... madd nudity and homosexual relations... It was terribly uncomfortable to watch, and you didnt even get to hear any of the music. =[
2/10 stars because it was funny at times.
And anybody with an open mind will love District 9.

My story development professor said District 9 was really good. I think that means its awesome or something. ^.^

EDIT: Heh, almost forgot. I went to see 9 in the theater. I have to say its not the prettiest animation, it breaks no new ground as far as that goes, but it DOES have an amazing and deep storyline that is perfect in every way down to the last detail. Some people have said that the movie sucked, others are fanatic about it. The level of story telling trumps everything I have ever seen, and the reason Tim Burton produced it was because he is a visionary. The story is definitely its strongest element. The animation is spot on, and visuals form very Tim Burton-esque compositions. Its not as pretty as Kung Fu Panda or Wall?E but the imagery is well enough to show incredible mood and setting. The action sequences are exquisitely designed as well, especially given the nightmarish world the story takes place. Some of the imagery is a bit unsettling even. This movie is not a cuddly animation for children, its a mature tale with some pretty hardcore stuff happening.

(TL;DR) See 9, I fucking recommend it. Its metal.

One of my all-time favorites, epic movie. It also proudly sits in my legal DVD collection. :glad:

Saw Tango and Cash myself two days ago, was in the mood for a retro action flick. Kurt Russel is always awesome, but I still prefer Escape From New York.

Finally saw District 9, and I'd give it a 7/10.
Well it certainly didn't disappoint me. Though it did bother me that a species that was portrayed as largely savage and primitive could develop such technology.

All in all, a pretty cool film with some really awesome special effects but a severe lack of depth. I don't see myself remembering this movie as anything exceptional in a few months time, if I remember it at all.
Posted 15 years ago2009-09-14 19:19:05 UTC Post #273337

20 years after they arrived, already in tatters. 20 years of living in a slum as a second-rate citizen? Society would break down as shown.
They're portrayed as pretty similar to humans in many ways, including savage behaviour. D9 is based on existing slums in Africa.

TIA.

Darn my local cinema. District 9 isn't even out until Sunday, meanwhile everyone else has been enjoying it for weeks. Up has just come out though, so there's a bonus.

More on-topic, I decided to watch Being John Malkovich the other night. Didn't think it was as big a deal as it's supposed to be. Interesting and unique, sure, but not that great.

I have to agree with Rimrook's take on 9, I think it's Tim Burton's finest work yet. Now, since we're on the subject of animation, I have to ask this: As anybody here has seen a recently released Japanese animated movie called "Ponyo"? I am just curious to know if it's good or not.
