I like Soup Miner's idea. If it happens to take on a specific trend, perhaps then a new (sub-)section could be discussed.

Also please a photography section where us photographers can show off our work and bloat our egos and pretend we're ?ber.
Posted 13 years ago2011-02-10 03:38:45 UTC Post #290243
There's already a photography thread and an entire miscellaneous forum. Catering to different, specific interests can only go so far.
Posted 13 years ago2011-02-10 04:18:27 UTC Post #290244
Not necessarily specific interests but a decent categorizing system, on your own profile or such you could make\edit categories so people can check out your photography or such, it's a hell of a lot more convenient then just going through a entire unorganized thread for one purpose, and then having to dig for other misc things that person may have created\posted.

Also Luke, what the fuck you want us to do? Be non-relevant like you?

As myself I am always relevant.

Going on Soup's idea:

Even if we start catering to other crowds, whom may already exist here, what really makes it different from the current TWHL?

Everything that can be / wants to be discussed is already happening. There's threads here that encompass pretty much everything.

You say that we need sections for different stuff like this? What makes you think that opening sections will bring in more people?

The threads we have, as of now, are sufficient enough as they are. There is nothing about topical threads that screams "hey, this would be cool if I could start a NEW thread about this subject, and put it in this subject's section!"

What we really need to do is focus on what we have, and what we could reasonably have.

We have:
  • A community made up of about 40 active members
  • Goldsource and Source tutorials
  • A shit ton of maps for said engines
What we can reasonably have:
  • A new name (still don't see a point)
  • A new domain (all for it)
  • New Webdesign
  • new hosting (necessary)
  • More tutorials
The most important point is the last point. Tutorials. Or not even that: just content.
Given we get actual content for other things we wish to do, then we start branching that way. You can't "build it and hope they come". This isn't fucking Woodstock.

Start a motion towards different content, and then we can move that way. I don't think discussing what we could encompass will accomplish anything. Start showing genuine discussion and interest to other things, and then we can even think about adding more.

Fair enough, I just figured the site would have been a little more organized and friendly to use for the existing members, not necessarily to attract new members.

You still haven't made up your mind?

Oh, and I haven't read a thing, there is just to much to read.

Whatever we do, it won't happen for a while. This thread was created to get your opinions on our ideas for the future of the site.

I can already tell you that our plans for the site redesign have changed a fair bit as a result of the feedback here. The renaming of the site isn't in any way a given at this point. If we can keep the name familiar and get a suitable domain, then it's win-win for all of us.

When the time comes we'll probably be rolling out another thread with our revised ideas and getting your opinions on those, too.

Im only 13 but I would like to say that if you would create a web on YOUR OWN STUFF (server/etc) that would be good, as if you lost contact with the web owner person COMPLETELY (CAPTAIN P's OFF AND I NEEDED HIM)we would all be in the s***s... so I think that this would be a jolly good idea!

Maybe it is better just to make a TWHL 4 on a new domain and server.

How about more activities? More things for the community to do. Consistent competitions, MotM stuff that is current and up to date, and more mini-compos that challenges mapping, modeling, texturing, whatever is fun. That'll keep the community booming.

I'd love to see editorials written by the the senior mods and/or the more experienced users on mapping-related stuff; something less formal than a tutorial yet more focused than a journal post.

Damn it, twhl.co.uk is taken too... since 26th of January! Was that any of you guys?

Yeah only now I thought of checking, even if I mentioned it several days ago.

I promise I won't bring up the domain subject again :P

Oh, Strideh, I have to use UDK for uni, so I'm all for it! The editor needs some serious tweaking though, in my opinion. Sadly it ran smoothly on my old Nvidia GPU, but since that bombed out, and upgrading to the ATi HD5870, it started to run like shit in terms of FPS, so it also has some annoying support problems which I couldn't get any help for at the official forum.

But it's such a wonderfully optimised and stunning engine, it has so much potential for amateur developers and would definitely be a great way to attract new members if we could actually get some good tutes and what not for it. Who knows, I might end up helping.

If you don't have control over this site, and the owner doesn't give a itsh. then take the new domain, simple as that.

What's wrong with TWHL4?
When I mentioned TWHL 4, I didn't mean it as a name, just a new version. Websites never put the version of the site in their domain, it's just silly.
Posted 13 years ago2011-02-15 04:02:31 UTC Post #290382
Especially when you want to update your site version?

Although, you could update the site in revisions, but you'd be stuck in TWHL4 for a good while....

I think that shoutbox should be fixed so that you don't have to refresh the page to see what others have posted.
