it took be about seven attempts before I finally had something I was happy with by the time I reached the 30 limit.

I'm just too nit-picky for a 30 brush limit ;)

36-6 sky brushes = 30 brushes

Totally had something different in mind, I was inspired by an odd cloud shape to start my compo. But meh, I rushed it and... it's done more instinctively than using my imagination. Oh well...

I like Captain Terror's one and Cpl1.Insane's one.

I think the source engine will have a winning edge in this one.
Posted 13 years ago2011-04-09 16:27:41 UTC Post #293262
Yes the better "graphics" should be taken into account. Sheesh i'm sure I could have done mine in source. It would have been a great exercise. Wow there has been a great turnout! Cool maps guys I like the ambience in yours hotdog. And yours is quite strange striker. Hmm I should have focused on better quality textures.

Final

Name of entry: Reflections of a split personality.
Idea behind it: The two mirrors represent the two sides of the g-man. The blue represents the clean and formal personality, while the green represents the cruel impersonality. Blue as his coat, it reflects the formal side of things. He speaks at an odd tone, but calm and controlled nevertheless. Green as his somewhat alienated bonds - the yellow crystals giving light are also a subtle hint -, it reflects the informal side of things. Behind the coat the g-man has blood on his hands. Or does he? He has no honest reflection, for his role is vague. He moves his head from left to right, from blue to green, from formal to informal, from good to bad. Who is he? Even the g-man himself doesn't know.

Further comment: I had atleast 7 errors making this. I spent way too many time on this. Matter of fact, it really got frustrating and didn't turn out exactly like I wanted it to do. Still, I stuck with it and hopefully I can atleast contribute to the turnout.

Obviously 5 brushes stand for the skybox, which leaves for 30 proper brushes.

EDIT: Bah, with the loss of quality due .jpg my pictures look distorted! :(
EDIT:EDIT: Referring to earlier discussion.. I went for the 'minimalistic' perspective!

I struggle to understand why did you choose to map for Zombie Master 1.2.1(thanks for specifying us the version), and using nothing from it.

Not that it's forbidden, but really, it's just odd. And I really needed to point that out.

Well, my computer can't handle the latest source engine and what current engines hammer runs on. I can't map for Portal or Half-Life 2 for three minutes without it crashing. Zombie Master is an older version of the engine, and it's fun to map for.

Mapping for ZM is the quickest and easiest solution.

(c)Striker:

:o

I love it! Very space-age floating metropolis. The black reflective tile texture on the ground below the sphere-tube thingy creates a very ominous, vaccuous impression that off-sets the the radiance of the bright sprites and light beams perfectly. Great texturing and atmosphere all around, and totally the kind of aesthetic I'm into. Above all, very inventive use of the 30-brush limit.

Sorry, Captain Terror, gotta change my vote <3

The competition is officially closed, no new entries may be submitted.

Nice work everyone, we got loads of entries for this competition. We will definitely be doing more like this.

A voting thread will be up soon-ish, but everyone can continue discussing the entries until then :)

Wow soup thats really creative. It is a little dark but I can feel the cold distant ambience just from the screenshots. Very awesome.

Penguinboy has knocked up a quick voting page, so you can all get started now. The vote will probably be open for a week, or until the votes seem to stop coming in.

W00t! what a great compo she turned out EXCELLENT! :P

This is really hard to vote for one entry; can we split our vote between two or three?! ='(

Even though this compo is focused on brushes, it's hard to not factor in the sheer beauty of some of these entries, specifically in terms of skybox and lighting.. I almost wish we could rate according to different categories like Mapcore did.

Nice job on the voting page btw! Do you think we can add comments to the voiting page to explain our votes and thoughts about the entries, or just keep that here in the main thread?

I don't think we should be able to vote for ourselves, I don't want to vote for me but I would feel foolish passing up such an opportunity. There would be many entries with one or two votes each, instead of people choosing the one they thought was best.
Posted 13 years ago2011-04-10 13:43:27 UTC Post #293310
Yeah, it'd make more sense to have 3 votes, spread out over 3 entries.

No, but I heard it cures depression.

If you feel better, you should post here saying you didn't vote for yourself. Not that this assures that you won't be voting for yourself, but it has to do a bit with the psychology of your mind.

I didn't vote for myself.
Thanks quailcreek for the appreciation.

3 votes, so you can sorta rank 1, 2 and 3 would be awesome! Is this perhaps the most populair competitions to date, by the way? 26 entries... that's pretty massive! :D

Interesting entry you've made, Potatis. I'm not quite sure about the distinctive contrast between the white and black, but the blue tends to soothe it nevertheless. :)
Freshed this was pretty creative. Though g man d*** well knows he's one evil bad a** mother fu**er.
That's why he looks to the right in the second picture. My entry is full of symbolism and subtle hints. It might look minimalistic and too abstract and obviously it is, but that's why it's important to read the context in which it was made. Every brush-based object has meaning and it is for the viewer to reveal that. Obviously I could spill out every bit of meaning, but I want the viewer to put his own imagination to work. Hence it might seem a bit vague or even 'creepy' as quailcreek put it, since that was the direction I was going for.

Posted 13 years ago2011-04-10 18:29:44 UTC Post #293321
Yea unless we can't vote for ourselves who wouldn't do so. I'm sure in a way everyone likes there own work the best as do I in many ways. This should'nt be allowed. And one vote is enough in my opinion.
Posted 13 years ago2011-04-10 18:37:20 UTC Post #293322
But think about it - if you have 3 votes then the best entries are going to be repeatedly voted for ensuring they'll place well.

It will produce a much more balanced result. Other websites use the 3 vote system and it works very well, especially if you're going to allow self-voting.

One vote for your own, one vote for your absolute favourite, one vote for your second favourite.

I've got my favourites narrowed down to 5 right now... It's gonna be SOOO hard to pick one..

I agree the with the three-votes suggestion. (would your second and third choices be weighed respectively less, or keep it all "evens"?

I feel voting for yourself would be pretty flakey personally, but if everyone voted 3 times, it would pretty much nullify that vote anyway.

Whats up with this crappy voting system? this way we wont be able to determine 3 places. we need to be able to vote for 3 entries, then the ones that get the most votes get 1st 2nd and 3rd, and we shouldn't be able to vote for ourselves.

I severely doubt anybody here would actually go to those lengths just to have a icon on their profile page, and some minor bragging rights.

Either way, we probably are able to figure to filter out votes by accounts that just register, log in once, votes, then never logs in again.

Well the compo is over so you're too late.

Also, your earlier questions were pretty pointless. The compo was about using a limited number of brushes to make an attractive scene / level and capturing it in a screenshot. Using mods is irrelevent considering it is being judged soley on brushes and the video question was just dumb.

Does goldsrc support concave brushes, like an L shape? I was looking at Captain_Terror's entry and I would need over 60 solids to create those shapes - am I missing something?
Posted 13 years ago2011-04-11 10:02:10 UTC Post #293383
Nope, there are only 30 brushes there, though the solids actually are concave, and they compiled somehow(source SDK wouldn't compile these solids, nor even tolerate them to be saved to the vmf, but they will work in hammer 3.x)

Check out the RMF here.

How to make these solids:
1. take a cube and clip every corner at 45 degrees.
2. clip each corner again, twice, beveling your original 45 degree clip.
3. Now, you can "extrude" every edge of the solid, essentially allowing you to make compilable, concave brushes.

While a neat gimmick, you would NEVER want to use these solids in a real map, as each one has 42 faces, and takes FOREVER to calculate rad values, ESPECIALLY if you have multiple light sources, e.g. multiple texlights.
