The Unlimited Detail engine, now deemed "Euclideon" engine is back and massive jizz worthy.

Its 4 months old but I didn't realize he came back after a year of undercover development on his science-fiction-become-reality tiered graphics engine.

I was always a bit of a skeptic about this project, though always hoping it was a real thing. The ONLY discernible proof is in the LONG interview video where the reporter picks up the controller and fucking plays it himself.

Look at the videos on youtube.

This means there isn't a next generation of graphics, there is a next era of graphics. The era of real objects and people being topographically scanned into the computer. I seriously wonder what this means for games, artists, programmers, etc.

Thoughts?

We already had a massive topic with quite a few pages on this, I think it turned into a flame war.

Can't watch the video right now, but does it have animation yet? Among other things, that was a big issue when everyone was talking about it a few months back.

And please, before anyone starts quoting Notch: the guy made ONE game with very primitive graphics in Java, he is by no means qualified to comment on the matter. Look up Carmack's comments if you want an opinion that actually matters.

The controller is never shown in front of the camera, so i doubt it.

Also do the models have more than one orientation yet, or lighting that doesn't suck (Shadows, Transparency, Smooth lighting with lots of contrast)?

Notch was believable, but I'm uneducated on the topic.

If / When this stuff becomes mainstream then it could be incredible. Sure they can render millions of atoms and that is pretty impressive. What we haven't see is animation of those atoms, not to mention physical and destructible characteristics which would need to be considered in today's gaming market.

Personally, I think if this was genuinely functional or even legit, a lot of development companies would have invested in it already.

It's awesome to see that this project isn't dead, but I'm still skeptical about animations. They still haven't showcased animating under this engine.

The end of the showcase said that they had developed better shadows but didn't have any real footage of them for this video. They showed a few untextured renders to prove it.

I think this comment summed it up pretty well:
"The gaming/computer technology industry does the following: They basically take a bag of chips and sell it piece by piece, every year, instead of the whole bag at once. This metod is extremely profitable, as you all know, so it's not in their interest to give us all at once."

Just remembered: Collision, physics and particle effects were also major issues that were brought up, as well.

Its early, and its not perfect of course. Take it with a grain of salt though. The fact that they got that far is awesome. I'd like to remain optimistic and say that that they could fudge a lot of the collisions with collision meshes, particles could be done in the traditional sense, and animation although its not the best. Even if all of the characters are meshes, or anything that is animated is driven by mesh skin deformation, its still a considerable feat.

Again, I'm optimistic.

Hardly believable, a guy that before worked in a market, a small team somewhere in Australia, for now its 100% hoax to me. Giving that all the major players in this business could have developed one already. Even if it is true there is still much work left for them (me no likey small secret companies)

Bye-Bye polygons when quantum computers will be available. Until then, keep dreaming. Everything is static in that video.
