There is indeed a lot of controversy surrounding that game, here's an executive summary for those who haven't heard:
  • The game is not free to play, but also has microtransactions.
  • If you die, you have to wait 4 hours before you can respawn. You can respawn instantly using microtransactions. The timeout used to be 1 hour, but was changed to 4 without warning.
  • The game is still in beta and yet the Steam page does not explain this.
  • The Steam listings page also lies about many things - server size, map size, features that don't exist, and so on.
  • It's a total rip-off of Day Z :P If you want to play a game like that, wait for the standalone release of DayZ.

Ouch! I hadn't heard of half of those.

I guess the real surprise is that steam is actually promoting this?
Posted 11 years ago2012-12-19 12:14:15 UTC Post #311649
Well, they're not doing anything illegal, and it's not Valve's job to tell content producers that they're not being nice. They've since corrected the Steam page and most of the lies aren't there any more (though they made some insulting comments about that during a recent interview, basically claiming that "the users read it incorrectly", even though it contained some pretty blatant lies.)

Sure, but I bet there are criteria that games have to meet before Valve allows them on steam, why else have things like the greenlight project?

Without having tried it myself, it seems that the developers' intentions are essentially to ride on the DayZ wave, earning some easy money, or is that too cynical? I'm getting some really mixed impressions about this game.
Posted 11 years ago2012-12-19 14:09:16 UTC Post #311651
They're definitely riding the DayZ wave with a pretty blatant clone, however they're doing nothing "wrong" from a legal perspective. Valve's selection criteria is pretty much: "Will this game get enough sales for us to profit from it?" - Greenlight is for games that they don't know if they will, that's why it basically polls the community to find out how many sales they might expect to see from a game.

So it's all law and money at Valve too? I know they're not the small company that they used to be, but I would still expect a little more from Valve.

Azin don't get mixed impressions about the game, I've tried it, it's absolutely horrid. I went into it open minded, thinking it could tide me over until DayZ standalone. Big mistake.

Oh, and not only has it been removed from Steam, Valve will refund anyone that had bought it before it was removed. I think you just need to ask support.

Really? :D That's hilarious, on several levels.

Thanks for the info, I always seem to be one and a half step behind.

I spent some time watching the Eurogamer Expo on DayZ instead. It really sounds like they have some great visions for that game. I just hope it beats the minimum expectations. Also, talk about someone who is passionate about their work..

With regards to the War Z, they had some good ideas too. One being the player-generated quests. I've had that idea myself for years, but I've never seen it implemented in any games before.

Read up about this War Z thing.
Seems to me like War Z's developers are just fucking up royal (while making way too much money for it) and Valve is having to deal with half the mess they make.
They've probably been lying to Valve just as much as to the community.

Before WarZ launched, Rocket and the DayZ team were unsure about it. They didn't know if it would be good or bad, they only knew it was going to release first. He said himself, they could make a better game. If the better game was released first, that would pretty much be that.

The best part about this whole WarZ debacle is that now the DayZ team can take their time and release the best product that they can. We all already know it's not going to make it's original date of release before 2013. If we have to wait a couple more months for a proper, polished release, then GREAT.
Posted 11 years ago2012-12-20 01:34:19 UTC Post #311682
Absolutely, I would probably prefer that actually. Not that I would wait for it as long as it took Black Mesa to finish things and still be enthusiastic about it when it's released though.

I do not get the fascination people have with Metro 2033. I got pretty bored early on and never went back to it.

Got gifted Spec Ops: The Line and started playing that yesterday. It utterly wreaks of console so the control system is fucked and is the cause of death at least 90% of the time.

For me, it's the fact that it's immersive and has gameplay that blends well with the storyline. It's also unique in the sense that you don't unload hundreds of bullets from your gun, you actually have to think this well.
Also, I really like the architecture of the environments.
It really is a powerful FPS, while successfully lacking any of the overwhelming feelings of some FPS give you these days: you play a game like Metro 2033 for the pleasure of playing it, not for improving your mad skillz.

I enjoyed the little I played of it, but the locked FOV of around 45 or whatever it is made me sick to my stomach after 30 mins or so. Really put a damper on it.

A FOV below 105 should only ever be used for cinematic's purposes, in my opinion.

I understand that it makes the game look more realistic, and I can play 70 and above. I'd be able to tolerate 45 for a really good single player game if it didn't make me physically ill. I really hope the new Metro game has an FOV slider.

The FOV in Metro is measured vertically instead of horizontally. The 45 FOV is probably equivalent to about a 'standard' 70 hor FOV. Anyway the first thing I do when I play a modern game is tweak the FOV, because developers are all building with giant console screens as the priority. You can do that for Metro like so.

All games should have a default FOV of 90. It's difficult to play at 70 or lower. Crysis 2's was absolutely unbearable for me.

Yeah I tried to tweak it. Every time I launched the game it would reset though. After doing this every time I went to play I just gave up.

At the time I was still on a 16:10 monitor so it'd actually be 65 horizontal, which is still a bit low. I play my comp BF3 matches with about 85 so maybe I was talking out my ass when I said I can handle 70.

Splinter Cell: Conviction
Bought it on the steam sale. It's terrible. The controls are shit, the gameplay is shit and it's terribly unoptimised.

What happened to the original Splinter Cell gameplay that was actually challenging? Now you can literally walk right in front of people in broad daylight and they won't give a single fuck. And there are no real shadows to hide in, so instead they made everybody nearsighted and colorblind except Sam who can see just as fine in the dark as he can during the day.

I never played double agent, but Chaos Theory is one of the best games I've ever played. This however is absolute shit, hardly worth the 2.5 bucks.

Poor choice of words from my side. I didn't mean THE original, as in the first Splinter Cell which indeed wasn't that good. Pandora Tomorrow and Chaos Theory however were pretty damn good. Played some Double Agent on Xbox, it was fine, but not as good as CT, in my opinion.

I bought the first three Hitman games recently. I used to have Hitman 2 as it came with my X-Box, but at the time I was rather young and didn't like the gameplay enough to play more than halfway through the first mission, so it spent all of it's time at friend's houses. Eventually, after playing MGS2, I decided I liked stealthy games so I wanted to give Hitman amother go, only to find the last friend had managed to completely ruin the disc, so I was never able to play it. The Hitman games were on sale recently so I got the first three. I'm now about 3/4 of the way through Hitman 1 and I think it's absolutely brilliant.

Despite loving Silent Assassin and Blood Money, I could never get into the original Hitman. It was finding its feet and was a little too rough around the edges, lacking the polish of later titles (not including Contracts or Absolution)

Blood Money is still the best in the series in my opinion.

Finally got Dishonored with my Christmas money, as well as the new XCOM having enjoyed the demo.

Dishonored

I'm only an hour or so into it so far, but... I'm not entirely sure if I like it. I'm a ham fisted, hefty bloke and my strategic thinking leaves much to be desired. I'm going to keep playing because I haven't even done my first assassination yet. Just been spotted a lot and had a lot of sword fights. :|

I played Dishonored for 3 hours straight, and really wanted to like it. The art style and character designs are brilliant, but the story and the world as a whole seems to be shallow. I also found the level design to be pretty counter-intuitive if you want to play stealthy.

Lot of the times, there's just no place to hide, even if you use the teleport thingy, and no chance to stealth-kill without being spotted by the two other blokes standing around in the same room. Butchering everyone after being spotted on the other hand is way too easy.

I liked the level design and stealth sections of Deus Ex HR much better, even if the story and characters pretty much sucked when compared to the previous titles in the series. Maybe Dishonored gets better a few more hours in, but I'm not really interested in playing it after the initial phase.

Been playing The Walking Dead recently.
It's really as good as they say. The gameplay itself isn't that exciting but the story and how it changes depending on your decisions is amazing. The game forces you to make tough decisions fast, as hesitating usually seems to be pretty devastating. I recommend it to anyone who likes a good story.

It's very depressing, or at least it has been for me so far. I made a few pretty dumb decisions.

I'm really liking DayZ. Its atmosphere is very immersive, and I do like the system of having to scavenge in order to find so much as a can of soda. The maps are open and big, and there's so much in the world around you. I've already had entire adventures on the game, and this is only my second day of owning it.

I've finished Hitman 1 the other day, and while the last mission was rather different from the rest I think I rather enjoyed it. I'm currently on the Middle Eastern type mission in Hitman 2 and I can definitely see why Urby wouldn't like the first. It's a different type of gameplay in a way. The first focuses more on the difficulty of getting a disguise, whereas the second focuses more on general stealth and acting correctly when disguised. Not to mention the fact that you can't save mid-mission in the first game, which adds what you might call artificial difficulty.

Also, regarding Silent Assassin:
Those fucking ninjas are the worst thing since sliced bread.

Contracts perhaps wasn't the best, but it was totally enjoyable, and I would probably put it on par with Blood Money.

Everyone says it (Blood Money) is the best but to me it feels more limited, and the writing has a little bit of that crass nonsense that makes Absolution so unbearable (aside from cocking up the gameplay).

The plots have always been silly, granted, but their attempts at 'mature gaming' late in the series are really, truly awful.

My brother and I have been playing Orcs Must Die 2! recently and after almost 3 hours and regretting to bring lightning rings (damn mountain and normal trolls in all of the waves) we managed to clear 50 waves in the Endless mode.

We were going to continue but with our rift counter at 3 (that dropped from 30 because of our deaths!) it only took one more death 'til game over; we just ended up hopping in to the lava pit.

Wave 50 dang! =P

Mountain trolls are easy imo... it's the damn hordes of earth lords that always snuff me out at the end, but i guess your strengths/weaknesses vs. different enemies will depend on your trap strategy and loadout.

i deal with mountain trolls with said lighting ring or i stun them with the crossbow and then finish them with headshots or the sword thingie. (also helped out by copious grinders and brimstone) Alternatively, freeze ring and sword should accomplish similar damage, though i'm not sure because i don't use freeze anymore.

Orcs Must Die 2 is the best time-waster game ever =)

For us it was the earth lords that were easy. How we play is we funnel them (and every other orc / creature) through a "tower defense" maze of barricades complete with super slowing tar. When it reaches a wall we have a wall spike trap to fling them back to the beginning.

Should there be a low ceiling nearby we load that with haymakers and the dart things (freeze upgrade).

Not the best of screenshots but this one just barely shows our maze with the spike wall on the right and loads of tar.
