When I get a chance i'll try to sum up the rules for anyone that doesn't understand them. I believe the point of them is to keep it semi confined and to give it a concept.

Made a quick concept room for my lego level. Still missing a couple of colors, sprites, plenty of brushes/detail and what not to make it look huge. Player is going to be taken throughout the level as if he would be a lego piece himself, while on the lego factory assembly line - a couple of stops at a few beams to solder you, some steam in a quarantine room, a swift hammer blow on the head for the final touch,etc... Something of a goofy theme... :)

Some amazing WIP in this thread, keep it up! =P

I'm still stalled on exactly what to do, patiently waiting for the creative bug to bite...

Thanks Rim for clarifying the rules and allowing render effects, AND allowing Source! It should be really interesting to see what people do :)

Quit yer bitchin' and just map or not map. Preferably map. Don't get scared off by the big players. I might hang around this mapping site 24/7, but I sure as hell ain't anywhere near the level these guys be settin'. But I'm still gonna have a crack, see?

It's fun!

A single well crafted room could win the competition. There's no telling what'll happen.

@Victor_Paiva
Perhaps you should reconsider your color palette. Look at how many shades of green or the colors of the buildings in this picture from the Simpsons.

I was intending to do a dark and moody city in the dead of night, but I may have to rethink the idea. The palette is a bit too bright, and 'lighting' this is a bitch.

Rules, summed up according to Rimrook and The Mighty Atom.

-Clarifying original statement says no mods are allowed and engine gold source, but you can map for another mod as long as it's playable in half life or you make a half life version for the competition and source is now allowed. It can also be multi player.

-Deadline 8/22/14.

-Use sense of colors and construction to bring environment to life.

-Judging based on your clever use of design, color choices, theme and mood.

-Creativity is paramount.

-Can use vanilla sounds but not being judged on sounds at all, Rim is test playing in mute.

-Not judging based on gameplay.

-Almost entirely a style competition.

-Rimrook is willing to help you if you're stuck, so just ask him ;).

-Gradients: Allowed

-Render color: Allowed

-Sprites: Allowed

Bending these rules will get you disqualified so touch with both hands for those of you that swim ;).

What do we say, first place also picks next mini competition theme and pairs up with someone to judge or decides to pass the torch?
Posted 9 years ago2014-07-27 02:07:07 UTC Post #320836
TJB, aside from kachito's screenshot, your's is pretty dark. The fake lighting you accomplished is really pretty, don't let anything discourage you, you still have 3 more weeks.

EDIT: Completely forgot about winner chooses next compo idea. I didn't win then previous compo, I only collaborated with the winner (lol).

That rule summary is pretty conclusive. There's a small thing I want to add but it will be announced on August 6th. If you ever watched the monster makeup show "Face Off" or Jim Henson's Creature Shop Challenge, you have a good clue what it might be.

I'm coming up with a really big idea, then probably only mapping a small spectrum of that idea since it will be based on style.

Not that that's a bad thing, in fact it might be a good thing.
Posted 9 years ago2014-07-27 08:00:50 UTC Post #320841
TJB's fake shadows look great; not to excited about the full purple building, but it's probably still very wip?
Btw, could we use models if the materials are taken from the textures in colors.wad provided by Rimrook? Im planning on making a large outdoor area with trees, simply asking for performance reasons...
Posted 9 years ago2014-07-27 11:57:07 UTC Post #320846
I don't think the rule should be set in stone that the the winner chooses the next one; Atom and Rim have done a great job so far, why fuck with perfection? ;)

But whatever everyone else wants! Would the winner then help judge the next compo, or still participate as usual?

I saw choosing the next compo as being a kind of prize, but we have some real prizes on the table now. Before it was mentioned, I thought the baton would be passed back to Atom.

This competition is tough for me, i'm not very experienced with color design.
Posted 9 years ago2014-07-28 07:41:53 UTC Post #320856
A lot of people seem to be doing fairly standard maps, just with plain colours.
I'm going to go for a more abstract environment. The lack of definition between sides of objects could make for some interesting designs.
... I'm hardly the best person to make use of this opportunity, but hey!

I've been studying color a little, also tested a few things. It turned out ugly in hammer, so back to the drawing board.

This compo might be difficult break ice with. A good theme goes a LOOOONG way because it defines nearly everything. Whether it be sci-fi or modern, try mapping something you know. Re-imagine Zeeba_Pool, Gauss_God, or DE_Dust_Thunder in a color scheme that is outside your usual or the predictable.

This is a fun tool I found. https://kuler.adobe.com/create/color-wheel/

Also if you want to create something non-themed and unique, you can try different Archetecture (they forgot to list Rococo) or my personal favorite, base the archetecture on the designs seen in furniture.

960x480 unit room and i'm getting near 3k wpolys... I think i'm switching to source as well. At this rate, there's no way i'll be able to come up with a large outside area with decent frame rates. I know optimization doesn't matter in this one, but still...
Anyway, are we allowed to use blend textures for displacements in source?
(thanks CT for the materials port).
Posted 9 years ago2014-07-30 00:00:31 UTC Post #320878
Kachito, make sure you're not skipping RAD, else like Rim said, it'll laaag (As Alberto suggested, maybe try increasing the texture scale to hurry RAD up) ;)

Btw, if anyone figures out how to properly fullbright the map in source, please share :)

Solved the source fullbright problem.

The materials need to be converted to a UnlitGeneric shader type so they don't cast nor receive lighting.

Get the updated materials here.

I've been doing color palette research over the past few days.
I'm gonna start from scratch and focus on more of a Myst storytelling.
So no need for weapons or enemies to get in the way of the colors.
No need for sound to enhance the gameplay (though there will be some)

I have a few specific areas and themes I want to portray..
Now I have to bring them all together

Note
Source mappers make sure you rename the diretory of the materials to "colors", so it matches the VMT! I did the same thing Rimmeh, didn't even realize it! :P
