Hi! I have spent hours googling tutorials for this and playing around with palettes and I can't get my custom decals to appear in game, it's not that the transparency is wrong, it's that they don't appear AT ALL, even if I copy existing decals from the Halflife decals.wad

Step by step:

1. Opened up decals.wad and copied an existing decal
2. Right click > "paste as new" in my custom wad file (I know this is working as all my other custom textures work)
3. I can export and import the palette from the original texture to the new texture, it makes no difference
4. Save the texture with { at the beginning of the name and the save the wad file
5. Open Hammer, place the decal using the decal tool, compile the game, run the game (Sven coop), cry cos its still not working?!?!

I've also tried using the wally "HL Color Decal" wizard which creates a new wad file which I imported and used, didn't work. I also tried creating textures from scratch with a greyscale palette, didn't work.

I've tried everything I can think of, need help to make awesome maps, thanks

Maybe decals need to be in
decals.wad
and not a custom one? I think somebody else here had that problem too?

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it only works for the decals.wad file. Though Sven might have something that lets you add extra decals, maybe ask on their forums?

As the others have said, this may work differently in sven, but all decals must be in the decals wad. It's also really finicky in that if you add a NEW texture info decals.wad, it may cause some decals to show as white squares. This is what happened in The Core at least. I think you can only replace existing ones.

Decals are afaik strictly for yourself as in texturewad files both parties need to have the same file to see it.

NOT 100% sure but i tried making custom decals and no one saw these ones..

if some one can confirm this its probably the cs1.6 mapperzzzz

prolly dont use decals at all. most mods I've seen simply includes a normal texture where a wall has some painting or decal in it. just make a normal texture where instead of a blank wall you have a wall with the decal on it already.

If you know your stuff when it comes to texturing, that is indeed a much better way to approach it. Gives you way more options. :)

Ok thanks for the replies, I wanted to make custom decals so I can cover an office scene with papers, postits etc I guess I'll just have to do it on the textures

Decals aren't very good for that purpose, actually. Decals are generally only good for splatters, scrape marks or writing. Perhaps road markings if you want to push it. But objects like that? You're WAY better off using textures and small brushes you scatter around. Texture one side and null the other 5 faces.

sounds like one for using bluescreen textures (like what ladders use) so you have a transparent background

Unless the item has a complicated shape, probably a waste of resources.

Decals can also be replaced with brushes in some cases, although I wouldn't recommend doing it on a large scale.

Sledge also has a user-selectable-font text primitive for the
Brush Tool
(Shift+B), good for labels and signs in a pinch :D

As Urby said though, texturing is a MUCH more efficient/flexible method vs. decals.
