What will happen if I have two texture packs each with a file of one name?
Example:

banana.wad >>> poster1941458.bmp
papaya.wad >>> poster1941458.bmp
what happens?

Which texture will be used in the editor? In game?

Same as the editor. I believe one will be selected at random when you compile the map. Best to rename one of them.

It accidentally happened to me, when I was making an HD texture of a Half-Life crate. I named it the same as the original one, and I used the HD one in the editor.

I think it depends on the order by which you've added the texture, or it might also depend on the alphabetical order of the wads.

i seen custom textures named the same as the original ones in halflife.wad for the sake of sounds (dirt/metal etc) and sometimes the map would load with the halflife.wad textures instead of the custom ones

You need to add ground, metal, rock or brick at the start of the texture for the custom sounds. for example: Metal_sfloor-hl2 is one of my textures, when you walk on a brush with said texture assigned it sounds like "ding ding ding"

Thanks guys, I'll remember to always make up random names for my textures :x

In GoldSRC, the names of textures (for use with some sounds) are located in materials.txt. I'm unsure about Source.

Cool admer!
IIRC in Source, each texture has a .vmt file in which you can edit the material type and specify hightmaps etc.

Yeah, that's wrong. You just need to add the texture name to materials.txt
