Did you solder that yourself? It's very tidy.

Yes I did, but I think I was lucky a bit. I constantly have to clean the tip though if I want such results. Here's a macro shot of soldering in action:

What did you hold the board with?

It is an "after", after I soldered the chip. The next were the pins.
I used some crocodile helping hands( don't know the exact name), that kind of thing that also has a magnifying lens attached.

Just back from a glorious eight days in Cannes, Nice & Monaco. Utterly stunning part of the world - every place looked just like a postcard.
Took some snaps of course!

Walking a lap of the Monaco street circuit was on my bucket list, and I can't tell you how incredible that experience was. Standing in the middle of the Fairmont Hairpin as the sun set behind the Monaco hills was something truly special.

You went to Nice ? Damn, I'm at the north of France, how did you like the country ? ^^
Posted 7 years ago2016-05-01 20:21:25 UTC Post #330013
Definitely, Striker. Be prepared to cry at the restaurant and beer prices, though!

I love France, Shep. Been all around Normandy before and speak the language well enough that I can get around, although the level of English and German speaking in France is incredible. Really makes the UK look shit when most of us only know one language and you guys are all multilingual :P

The accent down there is craaaazy, though. It took all week before I could stop asking people to repeat what they'd said. The inflection and cadence is completely different from the North, and it really tricked my brain. It's more Italian-sounding than French! Even my girlfriend who is from Normandy was struggling to understand them.

If you ever visit, make sure you try the pan-bagnat and the daube de bœuf à la niçoise. Mind-blowingly good and I'd never seen either in the North.

Archie, postcard photos indeed, beautiful. Makes me want to start traveling.. ;D And I'll be visiting France for the first time in 10 days, going to participate in FIMU festival, can't wait!! Maybe someone is going to be there as well? Would be a bit strange but also really cool to meet someone in real world from this community.

Glad you liked the country Archie ^^

Yeah, we have different accents and some people are speaking their "regional languages".

I have around an hour of road trip by car from my house to Lille. I think I have 2 hours for Belgium and the Eurostar (France <=> UK).

I visited London with my school but I stayed like 5/6 hours there, couldn't enjoy everything.

Last year I went to the south west of France for my bro's wedding and we went to one of the best touristic city in France : La-Cirq-Lapopie. If I find the photos on my phone's backup.

Great to learn you've been in Normandy, Archie! It is the best place in France and even in the world. (The fact I am Norman is completely unrelated to that :P )
You live in Scotland right? I'm actually studying there! That's a funny coincidence, isn't it? It's a really nice place, although I'm sometimes struggling to understand people and to get understood. :P

Well into the night I looked up and noticed some reddish bright spot near the moon. It turned out to be Mars.

I went outside and attempted to take a photo. For once, however, I happened to remember to try RAW.

Still no Milky Way visible, either because I didn't tinker with the exposure enough or most likely due to the light pollution cities are known for.

The soldering wire is actually a tube with cleaning paste inside it. Additionally I use some rosin flux to periodically clean the soldering iron. I don't usually have problems when the surfaces are clean, although I don't solder that often to be experienced in this.

@Vodka: Hello there!

@DiscoStu: I didn't know Mars can be so visible in the night. Was this taken with a long exposure? It feels ... big :\ (did you use tele?). Also Photobucket seems like a shit image uploading service. It loads so slow and I usually don't have problems loading sites like these.

That's the moon, bro. Mars is the reddish dot next to it, haha!

Stu, you have an Android phone, right? Check out the app StarTracker. It uses your phone's GPS and accelerometers to let you scan the sky above you and will tell you what any landmarks (spacemarks?) are. I recently thought I saw an incredibly bright Jupiter, but it turns out it was Venus. Great app.

Fantastic! I'll have a look at it.

And Striker, this was a 15-second exposure at 18mm/3.5. The bright thing is the moon overexposed (exposing for the moon everything else was completely lost to underexposure), Mars should be the reddish pixel at about 11 o'clock. See the linked page for a diagram. It's rotated though.

To be fair I just remembered I also took the first shot on a super full moon, so there can't be a big difference. So for it to really be noticeable I'd have to take another shot at the apogee and compare those. I read the difference in size is of about 14% between extremes so it should be more obvious. Alas, the next micro full moon doesn't happen until July 2018.

Actually, if you look at me holding the sniper rifle, you'll notice how I moved my finger away from the trigger. Precisely, I extended the finger.

After all, the weapons were unloaded and the fire mode was switched to safe. Good times :D

Edit: the M60 was unloaded, while the PASP and the M16A1 had empty clips.

I have to agree with DiscoStu, I was shocked about the number of "weapon accidents/malfunctions" when I was researching about firearms (for ARRANGEMENT). Just because your weapon is unloaded, the switch is on SAFE and your finger is extended doesn't mean it's REALLY safe. Imagine if a bullet was still chambered and by accident the switch goes from SAFE to AUTO and the trigger was pressed ?

Don't get me wrong, it's cool that you had a trip to the army of your country, but having the soldiers letting you handling those is where my line get crossed.
Posted 7 years ago2016-11-24 13:50:07 UTC Post #332420
Well, I take precautions too. I checked if there was a bullet in the chamber, and I also checked the safety switch.

I did fire once. Don't worry, no bullets involved. It was an empty shot. We even saw a demonstration of how soldiers advance through the battlefield.

But before anything of that, we firstly listened to the national anthem, and then saw a presentation about landmines in Bosnia. My country is full of them, just like when GoldSource maps are full of leaks XD

But come on, even the 3rd-graders handled at least one of the weapons. I mean, tiny 8-year-olds held an M16 in their tiny hands, so cute :D

When i gave some of my old airsoft guns to my cousin i made sure to empty them so they couldn't accidentally go off and hurt someone. I thought i emptied them, then i found out one pellet fell out a while later.

You can never be sure that a weapon is unloaded and safe until it's completely disassembled and non-functional.

I was cleaning my room and found my microscope and decided to look at one of my beard hairs, at 1000x magnification, and took this photo with the tried and true method of holding my phone's camera over the microscope lens:
User posted image
It's interesting to see how sharp the cut is, I shaved a few days ago using a safety razor and apart from the split in the end, the end of the hair appears to be a sharply defined plane. It's a lot easier to see when using my phone's light from the side of the microscope, although obviously I can't do that and take a picture at the same time.

I then trimmed a little with an electric razor, plucked another hair and had a look:

I'm told empty shots can damage the firing pin due to inertia and it not encountering resistance (i.e the bullet casing in its path). Even leaving that aside, this is not how firearms are supposed to be handled. This is worrying to say the least.

@DiscoStu
I seriously don't understand the issue here.
I'm just saying that when children carry guns they're cute. They're cute with everything, except some things of course (don't mention them).
Meh, maybe we just had a misunderstanding, as always :/

While I do understand that firing without ammo somewhat damages the weapon, it was still OK because those were old, very old weapons, and they weren't being used by the soldiers. 1 of the sniper rifles jammed, but it was not a problem, because it wasn't supposed to be used.

I clearly knew what I was doing, I clearly knew that the weapons were prepared, prepared to be used by people who don't know anything "real" about weapons.

On any other occasion, such as finding a gun in my basement, I would simply check whether the weapon is loaded, I would turn on the safety switch, and, if needed, I would give it to someone who would do something about it.

At the event, we were told a story about a teenager who found a rocket launcher in his addict. He got very excited about it, and pretended being Rambo, and actually fired it. Guess what happened?

He turned it in the wrong direction, and fired, so it hit a wall behind him, and he lost his right arm. Poor fellow :(

I am not that reckless.
