I like how you tried to imitate CABAL's voice but something is still missing.
I'd upload a video if not my potato computer and poor video recording/editing skill. But you're right, I should stop uploading heavy WIP screenshots.
Good luck with your map.

Admer, when you'll realize that you can do a lot of things with a good pc, you might stop mapping for a bit and start playing the games you've always wanted to play or do other things.
That's how it started for me. I started mapping a lot because #icandoitnow and then after a month or so I started playing all the games I couldn't play and basically fucked up the mapping side for a while, then came back again at it but not as much as before because you realize something really important:

Why do I keep mapping for Goldsource with a good pc while I could map for Unreal Engine 4 and create actual good shit that a shitload of people would enjoy more than a game/map made with a 19 years old engine? :P

Well, unless you're a Goldsource fan like crazy people such as Urby and Archie. Those two guys are the worst trust me. :lol:

Well, to be honest, I've had a lot of stuff on my mind, regarding the use of my new PC.

Let's see:
  • I'll be able to use HitFilm. It's some sort of video composition software, as far as I've seen.
  • I'll be able to do 720p video editing. Something I've strived for ever since I started YouTubing.
  • I'll be able to make my Far Cry mod in its full technical potential.
  • I'll be able to play Crysis
  • I'll be able to play GTA V and GTA IV
  • I'll be able to play all these old Call of Duty games, from 1 to Black Ops 1, on the highest settings
  • I'll be able to play and map for CS:GO
  • I'll be able to show my cousin that PC gaming is far more superior
  • I'll definitely impress my brother and my neighbour-cousin by installing shader mods into Minecraft. :D
WOW. There's even more than that, I didn't even realise. Well, you're right. But for the sake of it, I'll just stick to GoldSRC mapping for a little longer, because I've got so many things left to do. My priorities are de_kobbl, and my CS 1.6 training map series. I've had the training maps in my mind for a while.

Edit:
Speaking of your GTX 660:

I don't know if I ever finish that damn map, so maybe I will upload my .jmf on TWHL. You will be able to finish it if you want.
As for gaming, I can tell you that you will be also able to play that new Doom. My PC runs it with 20-80 fps on lowest settings (But graphics still look like they are set on "High", id Software did a great job).
P.S. I need to stop trying to be "useful".

I won't go for Nvidia GPUs, I'll get an Asus RX 460 (which is an AMD card).
Funnily enough, the RX 550 is slightly more expensive than the 460.
Lol, 90% of the graphics cards in my country are by Asus. Though, there are a few from Gigabyte and Palit. No EVGA. no MSI, darn...

Actually, winwin.ba has EVGA and MSI cards. :D (as well as Asus and Gigabyte cards)

And the GTX 1050 is nearly 300KM - 150€. Oh, you meant 1050 Ti?
The 1050 Ti is actually 340KM - 170€.

Also, if you're wondering, the GTX 1080 is 1800KM - 900€. Wow. So much power which I'll never need. xd
That's why I'm going for the RX 460: it has all I need, and its power will be enough for a decade or two, if it lasts that long.

@Snehk
I think you were joking. For the fun of it, it's not 240 "kilometers". Instead, KM is "konvertibilna marka", a currency used by my country since 1998.

It's directly tied to the Euro as 1:1.98-something. Basically, when converting KM to €, we just consider that 1€ = 2KM.

Why? I've got an Nvidia GPU and it's incredibly good, even for entry level graphics. And yes, it was a joke. KM converts to € much better than PLN, which goes like 1€ - 4PLN

@Windawz

Maybe add some variations to them, like some of them broke and fell over the ledge, some cracked etc.

OMG, it wasn't a mistype. It's the real price of that card in my entire country at the moment. Of course, that's for a new one.
The used ones might be a whole lot cheaper. :3

But I'll NEVER get a used card in my country. It's just what the Internet folks call cancer. To be avoided. There's a site called OLX, and it's basically the Bosnian version of eBay. People sell their GPUs there, but it's risky as far as I know, even though they get good prices sometimes.

@Snehk & @rufee
My old PC's (R.I.P.) graphics card was an Ati Radeon HD 4650. Ati was then bought by AMD, therefore I formed some sort of... "love" towards their cards. Not a fanboy, though. I just like them more. <3

While Nvidia's graphics cards are an option for gaming, I won't choose them since I'm not much of a gamer by (strict, or maybe not-so-strict) standards.

And you should be aware that, because of my stubbornness, I'll never listen to anyone who says "get an Nvidia card". xd

Smells to me like fanboyism.

That aside, why are you classifying that AMD cards are not for "gaming"? Both green and red team have great offerings for gaming and compute fields. The high end is dominated by Nvidia while the more affordable "bang for the buck" cards are made by AMD. Back when bitcoins were mined by GPU's AMD cards were 2x as powerful compared to Nvidia in that particular workload.

What I am saying is weigh your options and since you are/would be on a budget it matters that you get a card that will offer the most performance for the money you are putting down be it green or red.

@rufee
AHA!
"bang for the buck"
That's exactly why I want an AMD card.

But actually, there was a period when Nvidia cards were on my part list. If I remember it well, those were the GT 730, GT 740, GTX 650 and GTX 750 Ti. However, AMD Radeon RX 460 came out, and I liked what it was offering.

I'm not really a fanboy since I like both AMD and Nvidia's graphics cards, but it's simply the fact that my graphics card choice changes over time. After all, I don't care what I'll choose, because whatever I choose will be better than Intel GMA 965 and Intel HD Graphics 3000 (the GPU on my brother's laptop) together. Oh, at least 2x better. :]

@Urby

Hammer, you say? Doesn't make a difference to me, since I use J.A.C.K. :biggrin:

The only times I used an Nvidia graphics card were the times when I was at my other grandparents. My uncle has a PC with an Nvidia chipset.
Quake 2 and MoH:AA were the only 2 things which could run well. Sadly, the same can't be said for Tactical Ops or anything newer than that. I didn't test out GoldSRC games, though.

But that's pretty unfair to say, since the GPU itself was bottom-end, just like my laptop's iGPU. xd

I remember that, when I still had my old PC and the Ati graphics card, the performance was OK and it had no visual artefacts. No lag in GMod, HL2, CS:S, Minecraft, Far Cry 1 etc. It was my childhood graphics card, if we could call it that way. I don't quite know which exact Ati graphics card you used, so I can only speak for myself. :3
Meanwhile, my brother's laptop's iGPU, the performance of which is ~85% of the Ati Radeon HD 4650, had some issues. But let's keep Intel out of this conversation.

If I had had a proper experience with something like one of those mid-range GeForce graphics cards from the late 2000s, then I would've had a bigger set of opinions. Sadly, my lack of experience with Nvidia graphics cards just can't give me any "friction".

Imagine me as an object sliding on ice. The ice platform is split into 2 parts: Nvidia and AMD. And since I have no friction, anyone can push me on a side they prefer. That means, if I were to stop at the Nvidia side, an Nvidia graphics card would be my choice and I'd buy that one.

I'm still sliding, you know.

Anyway, time for some screenshots of de_kobbl. I made some fancy updates. :)

If you mean professional video production, then it's not something I'll go for. There are other things to take care of when it comes to that. Storage, recording equipment... you know, those things.

If the AMD RX 460 supports H.264 encoding... checks to see if it does ...then I guess I'll stop looking further. My laptop's Intel GMA 965 just isn't for video-editing. :/
Video-editing is something I've been doing since I was 8. Though I still have a lot to learn about that. :3

@Admer: my 660 Ti is not new, that's why I've paid it 60€ (well 70€ with shipping).
And to be honest, 720p is not that good nowadays. It's better to do 1080p (60fps for gaming) with Nvidia Share (the old Shadowplay) or OBS.
An AMD video card would certainly give you performance issues on any Goldsource based game, so I'd recommend getting an Nvidia rather than an AMD if your most played games are Goldsource based ones. AMDs has some problems maintaining a good performance when a lot of light styles are used in a map, or if the flashlight has been used for several minutes the performance keeps going down and down.

@Windawz: GTX 750 doesn't support Vulkan API on DOOM, you need to have at least 3GB of VRAM. Don't even try or your game would just get stuck forever and you'd need to force close it via Task Manager.

@rufee: I can actually run DOOM almost maxed out (OpenGL) at 60+ fps with my 660 Ti OC. It has a boost clock similar to the GTX 1050. But instead of a 1050 you could get a new RX 550 for 80€, which is amazing if you're on a budget. :3

Hmm... I don't have a 1080p monitor, just a 1440x900 monitor. And I will absolutely not go through the financial hassle of buying a 1080p one. That would be way over my budget. After all, I'm not a YouTuber or something. xd
1080p isn't my goal, and I don't care what people think about 720p, or 480p for that matter.

And umm, I don't use lightstyles. I just don't. I am aware that there are people with worse PCs than my laptop, so I just don't want them to suffer like I do when I encounter a blinking light with my GMA 965.
If by "performance issues" you mean lag spikes under 30fps, then I'll buy an Nvidia card the year after.

Also, AMD has their own solution for video recording and streaming (though I'll never stream in my life).

Lastly, my most-played games are somewhere along the lines of Source games, CryEngine 1 games (well, only 1 CE game - Far Cry 1), and that's pretty much it. You know, I only play GoldSRC games because I test my maps there. I don't play it for fun or anything like that. Just for business.

Posted 7 years ago2017-06-10 19:21:03 UTC Post #335354
There's no need for a new monitor. I have a 1440x900 monitor as well, but with Nvidia you can use Dynamic Super Resolution (DSR) which lets you use a 4 times bigger resolution, in both our cases it's 2880x1800 which well surpasses 1080p and 1440p. Then about recording and streaming, AMD have those softwares only because Nvidia had them before AMD, which are Nvidia Share (the old Nvidia Shadowplay), and streaming software. With both of those I've been able to record a CS:S clip with no performance issues (no fps drops at all whatsoever, unlike Fraps).

It doesn't matter if you don't use light styles because other people does and you'd suffer fps issues anyway, also because the flashlight causes some problems too, and that's irrelevant because it's a game feature, not a map feature.

Just to make it clear, I went from an ATi Radeon HD 5870 to an Nvidia Geforce GTX 560 Ti, both are pretty similar in power, but I gained a lot more performance on both Goldsource and CryEngine based games with the 560 Ti. Respectively, ~100+ fps on Goldsource and ~20/30+ fps on CryEngine.
Also, CryEngine based games runs better on Nvidia chipsets; going from Far Cry 1 to Crysis 3.
Basically, you can start thinking that there's no particular difference in Nvidia and AMD cards only if you play modern games (2013 and above). But still, some modern games suffer from performance issues with AMD, giving Nvidia the lead anyway.

It's not about being an Nvidia fanboy, it's about matter of facts.
The only thing about Nvidia is that their drivers are a bit less stable than AMD ones. That's it.

Then the choice is yours, I'm just trying to point you in the right direction. I've based myself on my personal experiences and overall people experiences, since Nvidia owns like 70% of the market as far as I know.

Cheers for the map though. :3
