It's probably because he doesn't want to fixate on the fact that Vodka's making a map of columbine high school. :P

@NineTnine
Now I'm getting an urge to install Worldcraft 2 on my Windows 98 virtual machine. xD

@everyone else
People, it's just another school map, not a terrorist attack simulation. Of course, the more destruction, the more fun it gets. :)

@Vodka
Snap On Grid = 1!?
But you're not abbadon. XD

unsurprisingly, this isn't the first time someone tried to make this kind of map.
Posted 7 years ago2017-06-21 17:07:59 UTC Post #335632
There was a scenario where a kid made a CS map of his school because the architecture/layout was correct for the game, he got expelled and got the media on his ass, no legal action was taken however.

There was also that Canadian metro map for CS:GO where the transport company would take legal action against the makers because it could be a "public threat".

So I guess it depends on the country, it's morale, the place, the game and many factors.
Posted 7 years ago2017-06-21 17:26:56 UTC Post #335633
I've also made a map of my elementary school, and I showed it in school when my classmate and I were playing CS 1.6 in that school.

Honestly, I'll make a map of my high school, too. I just don't care about what others got (expelled, in jail etc.), because in my country, no-one cares about those maps, just my classmates and my friends who play CS.

Shepard's comment made me a little bit mad, so I posted again, lol.

Also, what authorities get wrong is that most FPS games will make you worse at shooting in real life. Making a school map for CS won't make you a better school shooter. The only useful thing you'll get is a tactical plan to infiltrate the school.

Except that he's chosen specifically a school famous for having a shooting. Columbine isn't really notable for any other reason, nor do I expect he goes there as a student. There is no legitimate reason to want to make a map based on Columbine, only "shock value".
It's in poor taste because of context.

sigh
I'm probably defending it because I made a map of my school and got praised for it, in my school. Sheesh, over-reacting parents who call the police as soon as they see someone playing on a school map. >:/

But then again, just let Vodka make it. I mean, what would even happen to him if he makes this thing and publishes it online?

Instead, let's focus on the progress of his map, and not the theme of the map. Because school maps used to be a serious thing 10 years ago, now they're a joke. Right?

I think the point of the discussion here is not that it's a school, it's that it's this school in particular.
Posted 7 years ago2017-06-21 23:44:41 UTC Post #335651
idk, saying you shouldn't make a map of Columbine is like saying you shouldn't make a map of any tragic location.

It's a historic place where a historic thing happened. The Columbine Massacre is a quite old tragedy now, and making a proper level of it might be interesting to explore. Like exploring a map that recreates the Titanic, or a concentration camp, or the World Trade Center during the attack.

If I recall correctly, someone actually made a VR game where you get to see the 9/11 attacks from the perspectives of the victims.

Anyways, I know I'm becoming "that guy" who says the edgy things and always plays devil's advocate, but I don't think there's much harm in recreating Columbine high school. Maybe if it happened yesterday, but the damn thing happened before I was even born, and I'm almost 18.

@Dimbeak
"a concentration camp"
"the World Trade Center during the attack"
Good ideas actually. If I had a wish I would even try to make something like that.

A concentration camp map should play good if designed properly. Sadly, I'm bad at making layouts, but it would be nice if someone else makes such a map.

The World Trade Center map would fit Condition Zero: Deleted Scenes more.
Posted 7 years ago2017-06-22 07:14:26 UTC Post #335659
A school shooting map would definitely fit Counter-Strike: Condition Zero: Deleted Scenes. At least it would be a lot less riskier (since you'd only play as a counter-terrorist) than a map for a game where you can choose to play either as a counter-terrorist or as a terrorist.

But a concentration camp map would probably go well with the Yugoslav wars setting. That seems very historical. :)

A good video on the subject:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s6xQlnzffRg

A headshot CS map set in the Columbine would be more akin to a 9/11 flight sim where you try to inflict the max. possible damage to the towers, as opposed to something showing the horrors the victims faced. It's more akin to playing a nazi executioner in your concentration camp example as opposed to someone trying to survive/break out. It's not insightful, not eye-opening - it's plain sadistic.

Bottom line, make what you like, but this... One of two things is happening here.

1. You're attempting to accurately recreate the layout of the Columbine high school. Would be a little bit of an odd choice, but since your blog site has already stated that's not what you're going for...

2. You're sticking the name 'Columbine' on a generic school themed map in a poor attempt to be "edgy." In the early 2000s then it might have been but in 2017? To borrow from Yahtzee Crowshaw's list of similes: "It's about as edgy as a spherical cake in the middle of something."

@Daubster
That's what CS is all about. Shooting with no regards to the surroundings and the setting. Someone could keep explaining how not-OK school maps are to a person for the entire day, but that mapper will be pretty stubborn and make the map, recklessly.

Unless someone makes a Half-Life mod where you're a victim of a school shooting. x)
But hardly anyone would prefer being a school victim, right? I'd rather blow up a school (like I do in my school map) rather than being under the influence of a random kid with a gun (in the mod, I mean).

I only wanted to say that a concentration camp map would play pretty good because of the layout. No sadism involved.
Hmmm, you know, the concentration camp theme really fits the es_ gamemode. When I finish deadlands I will take a deeper look into this idea.

@Daubster

Ha, that video is probably Extra Credit's most heavily debated video.

Shock values =/= sadism. Making a map that recreates Columbine wouldn't be sadistic, unless, say, you made it a coop map where you shoot hostages.

The response video raises some good points, I haven't considered Hatred from that standpoint. I guess you can compare it to the COD: Modern Warfare 2 airport massacre scene regards to shock value etc., except the former isn't rewarding you for taking part, and gives you an option to walk through it w/o firing at anyone.

Maybe calling it sadistic was the wrong choice of words. I think it's more reductionist of the massacre itself. If you set up a game in a location where a mass shooting happened, and the gameplay has two equally equipped factions battling out (i.e. CSDM), that goes against the original story where unarmed innocents were pointlessly murdered. It reduces its impact on the player, and fails to explore it. The title implies that, regardless of the author's intentions.

Bottom line is I don't think these things shouldn't exist at all, but it's up to the creator to do right by the original event the game/map is based on. And sure, dick around for the lulz etc., but that's in extremely poor taste at the end of the day.

Admer, nobody is suggesting there's any actual controversy here or that anyone will get arrested for making a map of their school. 90% of mappers here have mapped their school.

Mapping this school is just an unnecessary attempt at shock value and a pointless exercise in deliberately being a dick.

Life is better when you're not a dick.

Daubster got it spot on. It's absolutely possible to make light of tragedy. To make art inspired by it. To alleviate pain with comedy.
The important factors are context and tone and this map falls flat on both points.

So map whatever you want, but why be a dick?

I reacted like that because Shepard said something which caused me to react this way. But the point we should be at is:

@Vodka
That 'bug' you don't know how to fix is a VIS thing, I assume. Basically, GoldSRC renders that hall and then it gets visible behind the sky brushes.
You either used a sky"box" or your map isn't VIS-optimised.
If it's the first case, then don't just make a hollow box of sky brushes, but instead try carefully wrapping the sky brushes. Basically, use the sky brushes to seal the map from the void.

If it's the latter (needs VIS-optimisation), then you should really learn some stuff about Hint and Skip brushes. I had to learn them while I was making de_kobbl because I ran into VIS-bugs.

Although, aren't both of these VIS problems? Lol.

Apply some logic to that situation Vodka. If you can see the interior through the skybox then what should you actually be seeing there? The exterior wall.

It's not a bug. It's poor planning.
