It's a shame it is at heart a game that requires so many people. I'd love games just filled up with TWHL folk. Unfortunately, I don't know how practical it is to get any more than four people into the same game. (Those custom servers, maybe? I know you can't host them yet, but you can join 'em.)

Give us a shout next time you've got a game going Urb! Yeah, it's a bit of a shame that it's 4 player max on squad, however could see the game being horribly unbalanced with huge teams. Maybe there should be an exclusive larger team gamemode?

Oh, I didn't necessarily mean bigger teams. I'd say 6 would be a high cap for that. I just meant a bunch of us into a free-for-all :P

(I am also generally available for PUBG. My usual Duos partner is graphics-cardless at the moment, and I have been enjoying team games more than solo lately.)

Really? I do a mix of squad and solo in PUBG...

Usually I just do auto matching for squads so teaming up with 3 other randoms can be either super fun or super frustrating. But if I cant be bothered with looking out for other people, landing in places I don't like etc. I'll do a solo which can always still be fun... Only done one duo match ever.
Posted 7 years ago2017-08-02 12:39:27 UTC Post #336665
I believe there are plans to add a warfare mode featuring two teams of fifty. That would make things easier and quite fun in a big organised squad. Saying that, a possible mode of six player squads would be ideal. I'm so God damn popular that four players simply isn't enough!

I've not played in a few weeks now, but I very much like the idea of the first person servers coming later this week. Shame it's only Solo and Duo modes, but I can accept that they need to work a few more things out first.

I've played mostly Solo, which is terrifying, or Squad, which is just crazy fun. I also played a couple of Duo games with Archie, but once your friend is down you suddenly find yourself in a Solo game... A very very short Solo game

I think Duos are my favourite to play. Spreads things out just enough to give you tactical choices without making things relatively chaotic.

I've played some games of Squads with random people, but since I don't want to talk to anyone, I never have the voice chat on. Make that weird. If I'm playing Squads and don't, y'know, have a squad, I'm more likely to go in solo and see how I do. (I've gotten preeetty close more than once.)

True enough!

I'll play a game depending how I feel:

Solo:
  • super sneaky stealthy game
  • OR don't have to play so seriously/muck around
Squad:
  • Don't have to focus as much
  • Bigger gunfights instead of little skirmishes like in solo
but since I don't want to talk to anyone, I never have the voice chat on. Make that weird
I don't think thats an issue, I've played plenty of random squads with people that didn't have mic's or speak English and everyone in the team still knows whats up even if no one speaks (or you can't understand them)... I don't think I've ever had a team that was annoyed if someone didn't speak or use their mic etc.
Its actually a pretty surreal experience when NO ONE in the team talks but you still are pretty tactical and work together well

I actually despise playing with randoms - luckily have a discord going with friends from home, makes life so much easier. Can't really trust or count on randoms to communicate or actually play well, yet if you've 4 of you continously talking on discord, making decisions, pointing out enemy directions etc. makes the game much more fun and playable.

Using discord also avoids giving away your position by voice chatting to randoms

Yeah, we do the same with TeamSpeak. There's a much greater tactical advantage to communicating in that game. We're all constantly calling targets and compass directions like actors in an E3 stage demo. :P

Update: PUBG First Person - First impressions!
Played a SOLO FPP today. I'm not going to lie. There was a lot of pooing in trousers. It was bloody awful. It was terrifying. It was disorienting.

...and I loved it!!

I'm planning to download Destiny 2 during the open beta this week. Thing is, it's running from today (Tues 29th) to Thursday the 31st... The middle of the week.

DUMB!

Not only have we just come out of a three day weekend here in the UK, my understanding is that there is a long weekend in the US this coming weekend as well... Why run an open beta in the middle of the week!?

So, I'll be downloading tonight, maybe playing Wednesday and Thursday if nothing else takes my fancy. My understanding is it's a game that is better with friends... but that's out the window now.

Seriously... middle of the week for an open beta?

EDIT

Ok... so I'm kind of annoyed that I really enjoyed Destiny 2's beta... The opening at least. The rest of the beta is multiplayer and none of my friends are playing it! :(

Just finished DOOM (2016). I had a blast, but I immediately uninstalled because the file size is ridiculous, considering all the DLC is for the subpar multiplayer portion. I don't need it on my hard drive anymore. :P

I didn't like it. At some point it got so boring I just uninstalled it. I enjoyed first two Dooms more. What made Doom 1 and 2 so good is the level design, but instead Doom 4 devs went for blood and gore.
Posted 7 years ago2017-09-02 16:25:14 UTC Post #337241
Doom 4 is the only part of the series that I haven't played yet. I enjoyed Doom 1 and 2, and loved third one even more. Sure it wasn't the same, but damn that game had great atmosphere, gameplay and just looked amazing (especially hell levels).

I'd pay any money for Heretic 3 or Hexen 3, just like Half-Life 3 (Raven can't count to 3 like Valve?). Too bad that EoC somewhat died out, could've been a great mod.
Posted 7 years ago2017-09-02 21:34:29 UTC Post #337244
I really enjoyed DOOM4. I would only play in small bursts though. Like, literally once I finished a chapter I would quit and do something else for a while.

I definitely liked it more than Doom 3. That's on my personal worst games of all time list.

Doom 4's... okay. Sorta middling, nothing great. There's a good shooter in there kinda drowned out by lots of pointless progression junk. The encounters started getting monotonous because they all followed the same formula: enter obvious arena - destroy hell nest - fight off the horde. Doom 1/2 obfuscated the encounters more, sure there were spooky monster closets, but they had a large variety of pre-populated enemies lying in wait to ambush you or offer unique room-by-room threats.

Doom 3 was:
  • a terrible DOOM game
  • a sorta ambitious tech experiment
  • a more traditional horror shooter
Take it away from the Doom franchise, tweak a couple of things and you have a pretty decent, oppressive survival shooter in there. It's lighter on health and ammo, and light becomes a valued resource (which they really should have done more with, fancy dynamic lighting engine and all that).

I don't hate either game.

Agreed. The levels are also completely linear. The so-called "secrets" are super easy to find - just stop following the main path and you'll find one.

I installed Shoker's Weapon Mod for STALKER: Call of Pripyat. Outside of the weather mod Atmosfear this is my first foray into STALKER mods. Quite enjoyable so far, especially now that I've worked my way up to the USAS-12 auto shotgun.

I gotta tell you, twenty rounds of twelve gauge buckshot in five seconds will make any problem disappear.

Those weapon mods only bring disbalance into the game. I'm kinda fine with the vanilla weapons.
Posted 7 years ago2017-09-04 09:27:54 UTC Post #337277
I love STALKER series. Played only Shadow of Chernobyl and Clear Sky though, and without mods (next time I'll play, I'll pick up Autumn Aurora).

Currently gaming:

1. World of Tanks.

Grinded my way to tier 7 tank destroyer, and blast through enemy tanks. Fucking Ikv 90 B can penetrate Tier 9 armor as if it was made of paper - and that's with stock gun!

2. The Dark Mod - the best Thief like game out there IMO. Even though the setting is different, it feels much more like a sequel to Thief than Deathly Shadows (which was awesome) or Thief 4 (haven't played it, but reviews and thief community call it an utter disaster). Once I'll get through all fan missions, I'll make my own campaign for it.

This, right here, is why Fallout 4 was nothing compared to Fallout: New Vegas.

Knowing what your skills are, seeing that they're not high enough to convince a character, then choosing the option anyway just to see the reaction.

I'd been playing vanilla for years, and it reached the point where I always ended up with the exact same loadout at endgame, so I decided I wanted a lot more variety. Plus, this one tweaks the AI, forcibly locks the game at Master difficulty, and gives all these fun new weapons to all the NPCs as well, so it's not like you become unstoppable right out the gate. Even zombies are a significant threat now. Especially when it's an exoskeleton zombie carrying an M60 machinegun........

Sounds like something I should try with next playthrough, I'll have to beat vanilla CS (always kinda dropped halfway) and CoP first though.

@Victor-933

The problem is that such mods add lots of useless weaponry. Two assault rifles with the same parameters but different costs or vice versa is a common sight there. I don't stop anyone from installing any weapon packs, that's just my own opinion.

I'd like to take a moment to mention Mashinky - an indie game going out on early access today.

Developed in its entirety by a single man over the course of almost a decade, it's in a pretty solid state for an early access release. Not without its difficulties, some things are still a bit rough around the edges and the interface still kind of gets in the way; all of these however are expected for an early access game. And it looks beautiful.

I had the opportunity to take part in the late testing stages (hence some might have noticed me already racking up over 40 hours on Steam despite it not being out yet) and I can assert it has a promising future. I recommend it to anyone who liked the types of Railroad Tycoon.

@DiscoStu: That looks right up my street. I cannot even begin to imagine the amount of time I sank into Chris Sawyer's Transport Tycoon back in the day. Hell, I still fire it up from time to time.

I might have to grab that. I checked the site to see if there was any mention of road vehicles, aircraft or shipping but had to tweet the developer instead. I ALWAY started out my transport company with a bus route at my headquarters to the nearest town. :P

In other news, I shall be trying the Star Wars: Battlefront 2 beta this weekend, for a while anyway. I imagine I'll be back on PUBG before too long.

Still enjoying the absolute crap out of my second New Vegas play through.

October 31st Update

I finally got around to trying both Hollow Knight and Spelunky and I absolutely love both of them. Hollow Knight I grabbed with my birthday money a couple of weeks ago, but Spelunky has been in my Steam games for a couple of years and I just never tried it. Been playing Destiny 2 lately, they've done well on the visual side though it doesn't show immediately. Cramming the player between narrow, generic hallways through most of the intro/1st level might of been... a bit of a questionable decision...
Still at level 2, but the rest is opening up well so far.

Edit: D2 was a fun ride while the story and level up experience lasted, all that is left afterwards is either mindlessly grinding the same underwhelming events or pvp. Since i'm not much of a fan of either, i don't see myself spending more than 40-50 hours on it. Imo, worth the buck for the story and while the novelty lasted IF you play with friends, but nothing to go crazy about.

Utterly hooked on Hollow Knight these days. I highly recommend you grab it while it's on sale, though IMO it's a steal at full price.

It's challenging, got some nice lore and the soundtrack is gorgeous.

Probably only get it if you're into sidescrollers/metroidvania games, but I didn't even know if I'd be into it until I got it.
I'm also delving into Divinity: Original Sin 2 and the mind boggles at the sheer number of solutions and branching paths this game has.

I found myself at the mercy of a locked door and having exhausted all attempts to pick it or find a key I almost walked away. Then I noticed it had a health bar, so I got my burly dwarven friend to pummel it into splinters. That worked a charm.

If anyone else has this game and would like to run through a coop campaign then give me a shout. :D
