HDR is the common name for High-Definition Range dynamic lighting. This is an advanced method of realtime lighting. First showcased in the "Lost Coast" level from VALVe. Fully implemented in Half-Life 2 Episodes, as well as official Source multiplayer mods.

HDR in the Source games does not (or did not? It's been a while since I messed with Source) work the same way as HDR in modern games and movies, see https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/comments/67bby1/eli5_if_hdr_was_a_thing_featured_in_halflife_2/
