Journals

As some might have already seen in previous journal posts, I'm working on a website for work.

As I have complete freedom over the design, I chose to make it in PHP to learn a new technology. It's going pretty well (special thanks to Penguinboy for pushing me in the right direction with CSS), but I'm facing a new obstacle right now. I don't think it's directly related to PHP though.

I need to make a conditional redirect, but I find I don't even know how to make a "normal" redirect.

The intended design is:

a.php has a textbox and a submit button. Enter the right string and you are redirected to b.php?event=stringentered . With a wrong string you just come back to the same prompt, maybe with an error message.

b.php only needs to send you back to a.php when no string is passed to it.

Right now, I only have one php page that does both, and it works, but I think it's a mess and I wonder if it would be "cleaner" with two pages instead.

Does anyone have an idea? :)

[PS. I could really use some text formatting features here such as bold, italics, etc. like in forum posts...]

I KNOW IT IS NOWHERE NEAR HALLOWEEN BUT

http://www.fileplanet.com/113998/110000/fileinfo/Swiss-Cheese-Halloween-Mod (and there are many other places that offer this fun mod, but I figured fileplanet is the crappiest one.)

The mod name, if you read, is called swiss cheese halloween. Bear in mind it has nothing to do with cheese. No. This mod uses everyone's favorite spirit coding for half life. And you get to enjoy seeing new weapons (albeit only one.)

The object of this game is, I kid you not, to escape from your boring, mundane life in a boring, mundane cookie-cutter neighborhood and enjoy a tropical island retreat with the girl of your dreams. (This mod assumes you like girls whatever gender you are.)

And so, this Halloween night, you try to express your discontent for normal life by going into that boarded up house in the corner of the street, of which rumours of an unspeakable horror resides. You ignore said rumours and venture into that house.

AND LO AND BEHOLD: GRIM REAPERS appear all over town and reap the neighborhood adults who are all out trick or treating (children are all in school.) You get on your trusty skateboard only to realize that a Random Giant Portal has sucked you to a Whole New Location. Well, you wanted to escape from boring life, and now you get to do just that.

IN TRYING TO CONVINCE YOU TO PLAY THIS EXCELLENT MOD, I will tell you all about this mod's merits. There are WHOLE NEW ENEMIES, including Witches, Ghosts, Aliens, Acid-spitting Aliens, Banshees and Scarecrows who drop MP5 when killed, Demons who drop AR grenades when killed, pumpkins that fire pumkin missiles, Giant Momma Pumpkin, and MUCH MORE! In addition to new enemies there are WHOLE NEW LOCATIONS TO CONQUER: a Pumpkin Patch, an old castle, A hedge maze, a swampy maze, a UFO, a witches Home, and everyone's favorite location, Hell, where textures are scaled up because in Hell, r_speeds are important. My favorite part is where you ride an old Boat in a river for about 20 minutes on the way to Hell. Now That is Hell.

Clearly, this full-blown mod should rank HIGH UP THERE on the list of BEST MODS. You know. And if you want MORE OF THIS KIND OF WORK, Be sure to pick up the Half-life 2 mod of the same name! I don't play HL2 so I don't know if it actually exists or where the link is. BUT THE FACT REMAINS that I am Recommending This Mod To U and that you should try it out (instead of playing with bots on Steam you know.)

I'm struggling to figure out how to do what I want with CSS. It's rather annoying. I'm building a website as part of my job. Without resorting to tables, frames or other ugly hacks, I want the layout to be simple. VERY simple. DISTURBINGLY simple.

What I want: A banner on top, a 4-item fixed navigation menu on the left column, text in the main area.

What I have: A banner on top, a 4-item fixed navigation menu on the left below the banner, text under the banner overlapping the menu. WHY?

Right now I'm testing inline then move out to linked CSS.

Code in my menu page:

<div id="menu" style="position:fixed;">
bla bla bla a-href menu items bla bla bla
</div>

I found position:fixed and position:absolute yield the same results. If I use float:left; the main text doesn't overlap it but wraps around it. I want it to be a column! GAAAHH!

Any ideas? Will be appreciated.

Well, ever since the 14th of December 1997, it's finally has happened. After just 39 days in theaters, James Cameron's Avatar surpassed Cameron's own Titanic on Monday at the worldwide box office to become the highest-grossing film of all time. Both released by 20th Century Fox, Avatar has reached $1,858,866,889 while Titanic earned $1,843,201,268 total.

The studio says that a whopping' 72% of Avatar's ticket sales, or $1.35 billion, has come from 3D venues. The domestic total now stands at $554.98 million, which still trails Titanic's $600.8 million, but probably not for long. Internationally, the film has reached $1.3 billion compared to Titanic's $1.242 billion.

Personal Comment: Well I suppose it's official, that the future of cinema is 3D, there is no going back now. This also means that it will be overall lot more expensive to go to the theaters soon, regardless what movie you go see, since now every movie studio will want to jump in to the 3D bandwagon also.

Well, I finally did it. I watched that video. The one that has been famously floating around the interent for a long time. Some people know it as 'Horror'.

You might know it as 2girls1cup...

OKAY ABOUT MY LAST JOURNAL
I'm so sorry I didn't provide links. I have underestimated how decayed Half-life 1 communities are... Now that I know how to, I will surely provide links in the future should it be necessary.

I noticed some of you guys (and zealously at that) appear to bash my retro setup. Yes, I play software mode. Yes, steam takes 20 minutes to load a game. BUT IT'S NOT NICE to say I am so retro as to be using IE6! The last time I used IE6 was when I was watching some yuri anime, and then I got some viruses on my laptop. IE6 Fail.

Yes, of course LIKE EVERY NORMAL PERSON NOWADAYS I use the firefox. I have learned on pain of viral infection that IE6 is not the way to go. But the fact remains that I have problems with this current layout, and I use a perfectly normal windows XP. There is total validity to this claim.

But everyone knows that with each of my journals comes news of a great new mod. http://www.pcosmos.ca/mods-hl/downloads/?mod=freeman: This mod is called Freeman. This mod features Freeman. And this mod is HARD. HARD on your EYES. You know. This is probably what they call laziness. Get this mod NOW.

I have never been able to schedule my computer to shut down on its own.

I mean, it should be simple. Just go to scheduled tasks in control panel, add the task "shutdown -s" at the time you want it and that's it. But no. I always get some "access denied" error or something like that. Sometimes I hate Windows more than the usual.

After a while I stopped by here to see how things are going.

First of all the new layout, where everything is misaligned for some reason, is rather annoying. I have to scroll down for every page every time I click something, I'm not sure why the layout is messed up, and whether anyone else has noticed this. But that's not too important.

First of all, I want to tell all the veterans of this sitethat this is the most random map I have ever seen on this site.

OK SO NOW Today we have to discuss what I think are two of the BEST THE BEST half-life (1) maps I ever played. They are simple to find on the internet.

THE BEST MAPS ARE

3rd505th - made by a man who was in the army, so you know it's good.
intrvw1 - the G-man interviews gordon after hiring him for employment.

I want you guys to take a look at these maps, for these professionals will show you what real mapping is all about. Notice the weapon and enemy placement in strategic locations around the level. Notice the use of func_ entities such as func_trains and func_pendulums. Notice the appropriate use of water and glass. These maps are what the industries covet. Learn from them. Make maps like them. Then Learn to Like them.

P.S. I'm making another single-map mission so be patient. Not that anyone plays goldsource anymore, but,

There have probably been a few journals that have talked about this but has anyone seen The Fourth Kind?

I quite enjoyed it although it doesn't make me believe, despite some of the "real" footage shown.

Your thoughts?

Hey guys, i left a while before Christmas, but im back now. I have been online for a bit, but never really thought to come back here as all my bookmarks had been erased, and so i kinda forgot bout TWHL. Then i saw Hotdog log on, so i guess im sorta back. right now though, and for the past week since Tuesday ive been sick with a viral infection, been taking pills all week, took the last one today. hopefully will be better by Tuesday. the upside(for me) is i missed almost an entire week of school! (except i have a lot of homework....)

EDIT: i also for got to add WHY i left, i left for reasons with my computer, i might have stated this, my computer would crash randomly, it was my mother board, i now have two mother boards, and an Nvidea graphics card, unfortunately i cant play the sims 3. =(

I've wastedspent some time on enciclopedia dramatica, reading about 13 year old fagotry and seeing random images I shouldn'e have seen.
I begin to consider myself as a virgin when it comes to internet culture. Oh boy, what I've seen there.... hentai, furryes, not to say that almost every ad is pornographic.
You really need to have a rock solid psihic(don't know the word in english) to read a lot of things from that site.
I am disgraced and, quoting Urby, my faith in humanity is lost. I know, that site is subject to sarcasm and everything is not token in serious, but it displays the sad reality that most sites try to hide.
But on the other hand, I have to be optimistic because there are a lot of other optimistic people out there in the world, happy, normal people with a goal in life, with normal hobbies.

Sorry, I may seem a little desperate, the thing is I think I am, but I'm trying as hard as I can to lie myself that this is not the world that I live in and I should be happy.

Relax, take it eaaaaaasyyy....chillout music is good here :)

Hey Twhlers.
My final semester of my 2year degree program started yesterday, and i was wondering if there's any Electronics Eggheads out there.

My final project is due in may, but we need to start it ASAP. My next class isn't 'til Thursday (when the final designs have to be in and approved), and i just stayed up til 3AM getting the first part of this working in the simulation software...

Anyway, I'm an Electronic Engineering student, and my final project is going to be a guitar pedal.

It has 2 main parts to it. 1) Distortion 2) Tremolo effect

I got the distortion down, it was as simple as using 1 BJT and a reversed-pair of low-power diodes to clip the output waveform... and a potentiometer to control the amount of gain etc etc...
User posted image
But i'm having trouble doing the tremolo. I want to use a 555-Timer to power on and off an op-amp with a gain of 1.

I have the timer set perfectly within the time ranges i want (1hz - 60hz) and i even have a pulsing LED to show the timing. But i can't for the life of me figure out the op-amp....
User posted image
If anyone knows which op-amp would be good to use with a 9V supply, and if i really need a positive and negative input or can i just use a +9 and a GND input on the - input?

Idk... Well i have almost another whole week to figure this out, but if anyone could help, it'd be amazing....
