Ep2 footage recorded. Holy fuck, Urby. I mean holy fuck. Scotch, you only exacerbated the situation - you should be ashamed!

Incidentally, as well as being fucked up, this episode was a lot more difficult to film because everyone went off to do their own thing. I often missed the beginnings of important confrontations, and I'm sure I missed some comedy gold. Ach well. Nature of the beast.

First peak of one of the final areas of The Core. This is the first time the player will have seen sunlight in quite a long time and that marks just how close they are to escaping Black Mesa... But will they be able to get past one final hurdle?

A lot of this is subject to change as it's only ever had one compile - in particular the lighting, but I'm actually quite pleased with how it turned out.

You might also recognise an area we haven't shown since the very early days of The Core - the lighting has just been completely reworked. Do you like the change?

Okay, let's call voting closed there because reasons.

Scotch got 1 vote.
Urby got 2 votes.
Blitz got 2 votes.
Dimbark got 9 votes (including urby's double vote).

That's that, then.

Thanks for the overwhelming response to this! I'm really glad you guys are enjoying it - I put a surprising amount of work into that first episode!
If you can think of any adjustments that need to be made to the format, please suggest them here!

Rather disappointing number of entries considering the interest at the start.
I'll probably do a video rundown of every entry. End of the week at the latest.

Be sure to watch in 1080p if your net can handle it. I've not used an HD link for you low bandwidthers. This episode is slightly longer than planned and takes a while to get to the point because each TWHLer is introduced.

Special thanks to Eugene Naesmith for doing the voiceover.

Don't forget to vote for who gets punished next! Voting closes on Thursday at a non-specific time.

So some of you were saying in the shoutbox that you didn't know what the name Big Brother referred to. This surprised me a lot!

User posted image

In the grand sense, it refers to Nineteen-Eighty-Four, a novel by George Orwell which you must read at some point in your life. It paints a picture of a terrifying world and was pretty much the sole inspiration for V for Vendetta in which a single totalitarian political party runs a country with such micro that everyone is watched at all times.
This is what Big Brother is - an entity who watches ordinary people at all times and punishes them for wrongdoing.

In a more modern sense, it was the name of a British TV show (latterly versions appeared in many, many countries including the US) in which a certain number of the British public were locked inside a house with no access to phones, internet or newspapers for a few months and filmed live 24/7 for the entirety. It was the spawn of almost all modern Reality TV.

Housemates' only contact with the outside world was through an omnipotent voice which would issue challenges and reveal results of public votes which would remove contestants from the show if they were unpopular.

in door textures in source editor Post #308769
HL textures work in increments of 16 so a door texture could be 48 x 96 for a perfect 1:1 fit to your door.

Source textures work on a much more strict order of 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512, 1024, etc, etc. The small increments of 16 just don't exist.
Therefore, when Valve made a texture to fit specific brushwork, they made it the correct dimensions, then placed it in the closest fitting bounding box they could. For example with this one, presumably it's 256 x 512.

Also, i find textureshadows don't work at all for me unless i compile with hdr
Sounds like your compile parameters are a bit mixed up, it should work with LDR, but why you'd compile LDR these days is beyond me anyway.
Also, you don't need textureshadows to have shadows in your map! I don't see anywhere in the screenies where it would really have an effect, except maybe the lights above the grate at the 4-way junction.

Keep the lighting you have, but add much more vibrant strokes of colour as well. A big contrasty blue spotlight angled across the room always makes boring old yellow/white lighting look badass.

Looks very empty and the lighting is really dull, which is a shame because you could get extremely creative lighting the architecture you've built.

I'm not going to go in detail through every screenshot, but I'll use this one as an example:
User posted image
You've got these weird pillar things in the middle of the room, yet not a single one is casting a decent shadow. Play with the shadows! Use your architecture to your advantage!

Your texturing and brushwork is all fairly flat, so add as much depth as possible with lights. Every single area shown needs pretty major improvement if you want to win!

Best of luck, guys.

Depends, really. Some, like these generators took about an hour for the set (there are 4 textures covering the whole gen) because it's to very, very specific brushwork.

A standard tiling texture takes me anywhere from 10 mins to half an hour depending on the content. Cliffs take a long while to get to tile acceptably, for example.

Add another 5 mins for normal maps and SSbump maps.

Edit:
I'm planning a quick demonstration episode of In Dev along with the judging of my texturing compo.

I wonder if I could actually have more than eight participants... There's a maximum of 8 sims in a 'family', but I could create more than one family and have them all trapped in the house. It shouldn't have any problematic effect since I never control the sims directly anyway... I'll look into it.

Ok, because we now have an excess of applicants, I used my old random number generator technique to pick the lineup. In the spirit of fairness, I even made it possible that I wouldn't be in it.

The lineup is (in order of their number appearing from the generator):
1. Dimbark
2. Joebama
3. Archie
4. Skals
5. Blitzkrieg
6. Madcow
7. Urby
8. Scotch

Terribly sorry, Hotdog, especially since you specifically said it was about time you participated in something like this. If it proves popular, I'll run another "series" that you'll have the #1 slot in. :(

I've built the house so I'll start creating your Sims tomorrow.

There will be a voting process involved where TWHLers will get to choose who gets punished or rewarded. Punishments could be, for example, having an inaccessible stereo constantly blaring music in their bedroom preventing them sleeping or something more sinister like being starved. I can't control the sims, but I can control their environment.
Sims will be sealed in the house and will not be allowed to leave until they're all dead or crazy... Or voted off.
Episodes will be weekly.

Hey gang,

You may remember way back in the day when Urby made a TWHL Sims Project series which lasted two overly-long, but weirdly compelling episodes. It featured eight TWHLers and the sparks flew almost instantly with Urby eventually sleeping with Tosse.

Fun stuff, but not particularly accessible due to the plodding nature of the "live" feel it had, with Urby just flying around looking for things to comment on.

So I bring to you, ladies and gentlemen of TWHL, TWHL Big Brother 2012.
This will be a show in 5 min, quick cut episodes filmed in The Sims 3 in the style of a Big Brother highlights reel. It will feature silly voiceover and challenges for the houseguests to face, but as before - I will not be allowed to directly influence the Sims' actions.

Want to be one of the "lucky" eight?

Post here with a photo of your face, and an image you would like to have on your shirt. It'd also be good to know your favourite food, music genre and starsign.

I will be a member, so there are seven slots to fill. This will be fun, I promise!

With such a lovely wall design you should really play with the shadows those pillars can create. Set the lightmap grid of the wall behind the pillars to ~4 and get a nice angled sunlight to cast over it. It'll create some really nice texture and will add a lot of depth to the wall.

Nice work!

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel

The best movie I have seen in such a long time. The characters were so endearing and were played spectacularly by the excellent cast. All the stories were touching and given enough screen time despite the wealth of characters.
I was hooked from the first ten minutes and thoroughly enjoyed it the whole way through.

Bill Nighy is spectacular in everything he's in, and it was nice to see another side of Judi Dench than the cold, tight-lipped characters she usually plays.

Watch it, you won't be disappointed!

Edit:
This extract from an IMDB review sums it up excellently:
"I came out of the cinema exhausted. The range of emotions this movie drags out of you, and the speed it does it, is incredible and I have to thank the scriptwriters and director for that. It is a while since I saw a movie that made me laugh out loud so much and so frequently. Dev Patel's character is one of the most likable you will ever come across but then all the characters, bar one, have characteristics that just grow on you."
