Thanks Stoje. And fresheD, there's only about 4-5 hours into that map, and most of the detail work and lighting I did as I was Laying in bed. that's what I get for procrastinating.

in aaatrigger texture and entities problem Post #292945
Bad surface extents usually come from a brush having 2 different type of textures on it.

Like.. you'll get that if you put a water texture on only one side of a brush.

You might have just only had the AAA texture on one side, or all but one.. or something..

First I deleted the local game content then I deleted the ep2 fonlder. it's redownloadin right now. so I won't know for another 12 hours or something
EDIT

Well the "delete everything & reinstall" worked.
Lost all my custom maps, but whatever. They were all mediocre at best anyway.

Thanks for the ideas guys.

Maybe i'll just uninstall it, actually delete the HL2EP2 folder, and try reinstalling it again.

Ive tried everything short of uninstalling and reinstalling the game, but Half-Life 2 Ep 2 is missing a BOATLOAD of files necessary to even play the game. All of Alex's scripted sequences, a lot of particles, and even some models are just missing.
I have no idea how it happened, but the game doesnt load them when i play. For instance, the first level of the game you're in the train and its falling down.. water is coming in, whatever...
but you're just in the train car forever because the scripted sequence where alex takes the door off the train just doesnt exist..

I can't even see fire because the fire particles are missing..

Should i try the reinstall?

yes the road is a displacement and yes you can put decals on displacements as well. sometimes they don't show up in the hammer 3G view but that's just a glitch. an area portal blocks via from a distance. so when I'm more than 512 units away from the window, it goes opaque and the interior isn't rendered. useful for making houses that you can see inside but can't enter. I'm planning on using it for the gas station as well.
I really need to add curbs to the road too. else it just looks funny

This is a miniaturized version of my street. It's a 1:1 scale but its not as big / not as many houses and such.

Its for a map pack im making about a dream i had... this is only the beginning stages but i love feed back.. and yes, i know the power lines are all screwed up.. i fixed that.
I also added an area portal to the window, door and garage to save some polys.. this is a GINORMOUS map.

in prop_ragdoll picked and dragged by playe Post #292573
can ragdolls be parented to physics props?
if there's no option to do so, create a logic_auto with an output of

OnMapSpawn > ragdoll > SetParent > Prop_physics

It'll be highlighted red saying it's not supported, but i've parented stuff to objects that really shouldn't be by using that exact method.

And if that's the case i'm not sure how the ragdoll would react with the physics system.

If you're using the gravity gun idk if that's gonna be a problem, but +using it might be.

/2 cents.

Take all the complex things and turn them into func_walls
everything that's not an external wall, that is.

So pretty much anything with more than 4 sides, or smaller than 32units^2 make a func_wall..

Tables, Chairs, fancy machines, columns, lights....

Idk what is exactly IN your map, but if you send us a screenie of the Hammer view i can give even more tips.

Try doing a cordon compile of different sections of your map.
and just fly around looking at every nook and cranny.
But try running with -particles 900000 like stu said - make the line bigger.

Hmmm... I'm going to have to look into fixing that... Right now it's actually a diamond shape.. There's a crease running up the 'back padding' of the chair and when it hits that highlighted part at the top of the chair, it splits into a diamond shape...
I suppose i can just weld those parts together - save a few polys...

Thanks for the input rim!

So who knows how to export a model to Half-Life?

in Map has hiccups! Post #290264
im assuming you dont have any leaks.. so that's out of the question.
models are amazingly cheap to render so they wouldn't have anything to do with it especially if you say they were 'minimal'.

Is there a specific amount of time between the hiccups? Like every 30seconds? or is it more random.

Are there any timed triggers in your map? have you checked for problems before compiling?
are there any issues with your compile log?
How are your textures scaled? is anything crazy small or crazy big? (smaller than like. .1 and larger than 10)

If all else fails, you can always upload to the problem vault and shoot us a link.

All i know is, It'd be nice to have forums dedicated to the UDK and Starcraft II maps.
Because i currently map for those as well and i'd rather not have another forum (let alone 2) drain my time.
I'm all for the switch.

Who gives a crap if the new site wont be strictly dedicated to HalfLife/source?
The current members develop for many other games, and i'm sure that within a short time frame we can have a decent following on multiple other engines, all spwaned from our current member base.

Regardless, we can't stay here.

yeah just use null.
if you don't have a texture called null,
http://ammahls.com/index.php?page=downloadcat&cat=tools
that should come with a set of textures.
bevel, skip, null, and hint included.

Else, just open up wally, make a random 16x16 texture and name them like that.

XSI has a built in program for doing that.

A little birdy told me a tutorial is coming for it too.
BUT that test was just to get something into source.

I can model easier in Blender, and import straight to XSI for texturing and exporting.

My next experiment will be physics models yay, then after that.. gibbing breakable props. but not for a while.

Well if you make the whole thing one giant func_detail, so long as you can see one little part of it, the entire thing is going to render.

I would suggest breaking it into small parts.
