The brush would be toast, but the entity tied to it would be fine. Try it, you'll see.

For example, decompiling will take a 6-sided cube, and make each side a new brush. So you now have 7 brushes, all intersecting and looking nasty, where there was only 1 before.

It might make 7 instances of the brush-based entity, but I don't think so.

If you can find the map, just decompile it and see how they worked it out.

You won't be able to use the map, because decompiling wrecks all the brushes, but the entity setup should remain intact.

Thank you again for getting us into modeling, Pepper!

I only started to get really comfortable with Gmax towards the end of the compo, and my model reflected that.

I was also fixated on using splines for a while, and it took me quite a while to realize that box modeling is much faster/easier.

I've learned a lot though, imo, and I continue learning new things each time I fire up max.

Main things I learned In this compo:
-Basic Gmax setup and basic box modeling.
-Extrusion polys
-Vertex manipulation
-Target welding--so much better than collapse!
-Cut plolys to add verticies--super useful! Still have no idea waht Slice does!
-Delete/creating polys--I used to be afraid of doing this!
-Flipping, so backfaces are back, where they belong :)
-Cloning
-Many Modifiers--edit mesh, meshsmooth, surface, cross section etc.
-Extrude edges, which is pretty useful--just figured this one out!
-Spline modeling
-That it's much easier to eliminate interior faces as you go, rather than at the end!
-Maximizing Perspective window--W key--makes editing fine points much easier.
-And many other little quirks/tricks of Gmax.

I look forward to the next compo :)

One option to implement what Captain P was saying, would be to use murals--textured brush(es) instead of the buildings--on either end, which would look exactly like the North/south portions of the camp.

One way to achieve this would be to 'snap' a picture--f5-- for each 'row,' then make a custom texture from the shots, and finally, apply them to a single brush face, one for each row.

Just adjust the accessible portion of the map to/from the 'murals' accordingly, and it will be hard to tell they're not real.

Also you'll have to find creative ways of cordoning the inaccesible areas with vehicles, rubbish, etc.

Hope Helps.

Spag that is freaking amazing! It looks like a real gun to me. :o

I love the fine detail of things like: the sights, cleaning rod brackets, trigger, and magazine release. All the big stuff looks spot on too.

Your meshsmoothed objects look pristine, except where the forgrip meats the reciever housing.

And All under 2000 polys, which is hard to accomplish with any level of fine detail.

There is no 'registration' for either, afaik.

Your avast has a limited licence--60 days--and that's what makes it shareware. Freeware keeps working forever and ever and...

I know, because I just downloaded it, and each time you use it, it urges you to register, whilst concurrently telling you how many days are left in the trial.

Admit when your wrong! It doesn't happen so often :P
Those things are a con. Do you defragment yours, though?
Not a con if your trying to zap all traces of a program, to get a fresh install--for purposes I will not discuss... :badass:

I don't think I've ever defragmented, at least not for a very long time. Anyway, doesn't Dr. Watson or somebody let you know when it's time?? :P

Why not just make the crate a func_door itself--no trigggers, no pushables--, which could also trigger the snarks/door etc.

Although the movement of the crate would be quite limited, it would be far more predictable/controlable/better in this case, than pushables imo.

But then doesn't that mean you have polys inside polys, which creates the problem SpaG was having?

Also:
apply meshsmooth to your mesh, so it gives you a idea how it will look in-game without texture.
How many iterations do we increment to see how our model would actually look in the game?

That is freakin' awsome! I just got the hang of using it... :) :)

I'm guessing decreasing the amount of pixels, increases your accruacy? What value do you use if you don't mind? I've been using 1 mostly, but if it's too much of a pain to get the 'cross,' I just bump it up to 2.

Oh and btw that transparency thing turned out to be under object properties, while using the select/move thingy and clicking your gun.

The 'viewport configure transparency' thingy, only seems to have an effect if 'see through' is checked under object properties.

When I first saw custom 'walls' on Doom games--mostly pr0n btw :) , my interest was perked that the user could actually edit the game. Downloaded DoomCad, but never used it.

Then for a while I ignored FPS games in favor of immersing myslef in RTS games--Starcraft, C&C mostly. I dabbled in editing levels for these games for a while.

My friends got me back into FPS by playing CS, sometime prior to 1.5.

Same as Hunter, I got interested In HL mapping as soon as I noticed the public could edit levels. And after finding so many webpages and tutorials devoted to the subject--Not least of which TWHL--, I was hooked.

I had the most energy and drive to map, when I knew the least about Half-Life and the Editor. It's Ironic that now, knowing more about both than I ever have before, I almost have no interest in making maps anymore. :(

Here are some misc. Gmax questions, that I should be able to figure by myself, but after a considerable amount of time, can't seem to.

1.Adjusting the grid. Once you've already started editing, how do you/can you change the size of the grid. I suppose I could just scale the whole thing bigger to make the grid smaller... What I'm trying to do is get a smaller grid size, so I can use the '2D Snap' to get my vertexes on perfect.

2.Ack! I just inadvertingly hit a hotkey in Gmax that turned my model transparent! It's actually pretty cool, because now It's a little easier to edit.
Can't figure which key does it though...anyone?

3.Also, ever notice that sometimes say you just want ot extrude something on the Y Plane but each time you try you click the window, It automaticlly changes to the z or x plane? Kinda disconcerting sometimes, and I know it's something dumb...

I'm really enjoying 'playing' with the editor btw!
