I like Soup Miner's idea. If it happens to take on a specific trend, perhaps then a new (sub-)section could be discussed.

Also please a photography section where us photographers can show off our work and bloat our egos and pretend we're ?ber.

.co.za has worked just fine for about a decade, I don't know whether it was paid for or not, but I don't see any problems with free domains. They can't be bad just because they're free.

.co.uk is free and nobody has yet complained.

@Capt. Terror. I don't find it that terrible. I feel it would be worse if it were a suffix - i.e CraftersWorld. That sounds a bit like Wayne's World or that sort of thing and it's too informal for my likes :P

It was just an idea. Of course it's not even near enough as it is, but I think it would be easily adaptable (that doesn't mean modifications can't be extensive - they should). But if you have a better plan already, go with it.

I can almost picture a sign like this like on The Simpsons.
WorldCrafters
the new TWHL
In all honesty, I think WorldCrafters was a pretty good suggestion despite what some may say. It implies some form of modding or at least mapping (modding indirectly), and subtly hints of its Half Life roots without being too explicit or narrow. I vote for that.

Let's settle on a list then set up a poll for it under the shoutbox :)

Also, on the technical side, perhaps a phpBB base could be easily adapted to fit our current and possibly future needs and include the map vault, user profiles, even journals with minimal effort (it's modular and it's already written). Plus it would handle bbcode correctly across all the site unlike the current odd ad-hoc contraption (not meaning to offend Penguinboy, but this IS an odd ad-hoc contraption). Of course, it's just an idea. I offer my assistance as a code monkey regardless of the platform used :)

Stu claims that we are trying to "steal" TWHL from atom. You really think this?
To be honest, I was just kidding. Some things one can't express correctly using text.

There's a counter point to your plan, however. Assume you finally give up on Atom and move everything to a new server. But Atom doesn't know that, so now he's paying for an empty server. Or worse, a server that holds the old TWHL as it was the day the new site was launched, confusing the situation even further. New users will come across the "old", abandoned TWHL and will leave disappointed in a few days seeing it's deserted, or stick around and interact with other new clueless members, forming a sub-community.

Perhaps it needs more thought.

So essentially you want to STEAL Atom's site and want us to come up with a new name for your operation, while you pretend to cater to an unknown new audience. I'm not sure this will work. :P

I'd REALLY try to contact Atom in any way possible. He can't just vanish from existence. :)

I happen to have a similar story I can share.

Many moons ago I joined a certain forum, it was very popular and people in it were very friendly. The forum itself was a subdomain off some other site owned by someone I'll call Susan. Susan was admin of the forum, but wasn't interested in it - she never once logged in to her account. Instead, she relied on Katie to do all the forum admin work. Katie was a bit of a bitter person sometimes, and was generally disliked by the community.

Long story short, I wound up being promoted first to mod then admin when Katie quit. After insisting a bit I got ftp access and database login data from Susan so I could update the forum (it had been running on an ancient, horribly outdated version of phpBB), but Susan never came around to see what we were up to. Susan keeps paying for the hosting, but she never logged in and barely ever replied to email, so it was (still is) all up to me.

Anyway, the point of this was that the server went down several times and there was nothing I could do but waiting until it was reset. This cost us nearly all members, currently we're about 4 (down from a few hundred). I even thought of taking all files and data to a new server of mine, but after about two years of barely zero attendance I'm starting to believe it's pointless and they won't ever come back.

*Please note: Names have been anonymised where appropriate.

I see where you're going. If there's absolutely, positively no way you can reach the all mighty Atom and request server access, moving to a new server you have more control over is a possibility. It's perfectly possible even to migrate all the data to a new, more flexible database structure if desired. Having a bit of experience with servers, PHP and databases, I humbly offer myself as a volunteer to contribute to the development of the new site.

It would be a bit sad to see the TWHL name go, there is something even magical about it and its simplicity. If Atom won't release the domain to at least use as a redirect, I'm sure we can all come up with a new one. TNHL sounds good, but doesn't have the same ring to it.

That's a neat idea, I've never tried it. What lens are you using? Looks like a 400mm at least. Can I borrow it? :P

@Caboose: That, my friend, is San Carlos de Bariloche, somewhere in southern Argentina and near Chile. I'd totally live there (I'm saving up to make me a castle in those gorgeous mountains). You can't miss it, people come from everywhere (I've met tourists from the US, Australia, Brazil, England, Germany, Israel) Also there are exquisite chocolate factories, it's like going to Switzerland and finding everyone speaks Spanish instead of German :P

Perhaps that's the reason I haven't seen any Swiss :P

I think TWHL should allow 3-4 images per line, to save us some vertical scrolling...

Has anybody tried to mod Fallout 3? (or any other game in that engine, for that matter)

I find it interesting that there's no such thing as world brushes, as even the game world is formed by modular prefab models. While it allows to easily make large maps conforming to a standard set of measures independently of the mapper (and easily making custom content that's exactly like default content) I find it rather constrictive that you're stuck with making your world out of a predefined set of model blocks. It takes away all the flexibility that allows creative mappers to generate impressive architecture and details with generic building blocks - such as in HL. Plus having to make your whole map only looking at one (3D) view totally sucks. Hammer a 12 year old tool wins <3

Anybody else use it?

I've been using it for a few months as (apparently) the only decent replacement Outlook Express. It's like OE in steroids - even in processor usage.

I've noticed when I send out an email with medium-ish sized attachments (say, 3-4 MB), Thunderbird uses up 100% of system resources while all mail is sent. That means, anything but thunderbird grinds to a halt until all mail is sent - for many precious minutes stolen from whatever I need to do.

Has anyone else encountered this.. uh... issue? It's definitely the uncool side of Thunderbird, but I'd rather try to fix it than go back to OE. Any ideas on whether it is possible to reduce this behaviour?

Very thank you. Me appreciate comment.
