Well seriously, using only Valves textures in Half-Life 1 doesn't exactly give you a huge range of options either. The fact that the textures are so low-res that you can't determine what you're looking at probably helped.

Fact is, games TODAY support high-res textures, high poly models, dynamic lighting, etc. Yes, you have to work harder, but hey, that's how life works, sugar.

Oh and Crystalman, we established that on page 1.

Its the same for any other modern game, not just Source. People who bemoan the use of props are just silly.

Aww, that's a shame. This was looking pretty awesome (looked like my CS:S on my old graphics card, which is high praise, trust me :P ). I would've said that it was Source running on low end specs if I hadn't known better.

I hope you come back to it one day, it definately showed a lot of potential.

Update time.

The last beta test we had was done with a Fast VIS/RAD compile. I'm praying that this was the sole cause of the lag that a lot of the testers seemed to get. Although we were playing on an American server, I think that the lag was far too high (I was getting 6fps at the CT spawn, definately not good).

I'm running a full compile right now and will be testing it later to determine just what is going on. I made some optimisation enhancements to the map and added a bunch of nodraw brushes to block of unseen space to counter-act the lag. Hopefully it'll run a lot smoother for everyone, with lag only being an issue because of the ping.

If the Lost Coast water is contributing to the lag, it'll have to go. Such is the nature of outdoor maps with no means of effectively optimising the entire thing with hints and occluders and whatnot.

As for the new layout, I'm not too sure on the matter yet because of the lag. While it seemed to delay the time that the CT's and T's reached each, there was still a fair bit of snipering. It seemed a bit more...justified though. The ultimate test of the layout will be getting ten players to play (five on five) so we can see if it truly is balanced.

More (hopefully good) news soon.

This is a process known as decompiling and is generally frowned upon in the mapping community. I'm gonna assume you're only going to do it to learn about something though, so Google for Winbspc.

Also, if you're still using Worldcraft, I suggest you also Google for Hammer, which is the new version.

I'm pretty sure they're making a HL3. From what I remember, it'll probably use a heavily modified Source engine. I doubt Valve would be keen to develop a new engine yet again (considering that Goldsource was just the Quake engine, the leap from that to Source was pretty large).

I think the Wii will convince the intelligent gamers amongst us that this is the new way to go for gaming. I'll take my PC for hardcore graphics, but I'll take my Wii for some good fun. Plain and simple.

Both the PS3 and Xbox 360 are simply trying to do what a PC does. The PC will ALWAYS do it better.

I just find it hard to believe that Sony would put gyroscopes into their controllers if Nintendo hadn't done it first.

Motion sensor is nothing new either. There were a few third-party controllers released back in the day of the Nintendo 64.

It's copying. :P Dustbunny is correct. Sony "copied" the idea for a rumbling controller (i.e. the dualshock) and the mini joystick from Nintendo. Unlike Nintendo, they decided to use the technology without credited the people who originally created the rumble technology and thus got into shit for it.

Ubisoft has slammed Sony for their "copycat" antics. I'd have to agree really: the PS3 controller has a similar "Home" button like the Xbox 360 controller and also features gyroscopes. Even though its less advanced than the Wii's, its still a blatant attempt to steal some of Ninty's thunder.

Edit: It's no longer a boomerang. Its a redesigned Dual-Shock essentially, from what I've heard.

For your third question, you simply select the object you wish to be a func_whatever, and hit the "ToEntity" button on the right hand side of your window (alternatively, hit Ctrl-T). A pop-up box will come up allowing you to select whichever entity you want.

For decorative stuff, you'll want to select func_detail. This will reduce lag in your map and make the compile faster. You'll want to use func_detail for all small details, like pillars, fences, etc.

I already know that you can create a revolving door using the prop_door_rotating entity. What I want is for the door to be operated merely by physics: i.e. the player has to literally push up against the door to make it open, which would be followed by a small amount of free rotation before the door stops. Is this possible?
