Well seriously, using only Valves textures in Half-Life 1 doesn't exactly give you a huge range of options either. The fact that the textures are so low-res that you can't determine what you're looking at probably helped.
Fact is, games TODAY support high-res textures, high poly models, dynamic lighting, etc. Yes, you have to work harder, but hey, that's how life works, sugar.
