Just out of interest,
There were 12 Judges.
They all agreed that Rabid's entry was good, but there werebetter ones.
So why did it win??
It was one of the few entries that actually complied with the compo guidelines!

Lesson to all... Only do what you are asked to do.

Special mention to Captain P and RacerX for their entries...
Well Done.

As Jaardsi said, good brush work.
Understand the engine, Learn how it renders.
Forget hint brushes until you know what to do with them. They are not designed to improve speed in a piss poor map.

Go Rabid...
At the moment you will place regardless, as there are only two entries.

The Compo is a bit of a flop and I blame those lamers at valve for actually managing to launch HL2 !! I mean, how many false starts did we get? Jeeze, I was banking on a December Launch... even though they repeatedly said November (I mean really.. who believes production companies??) (Tongue in cheek ;)

So, If you are going to post.. Get it in there!!
Thanks for the support.
Good Luck.

I like petrol and 0022, but I am not allowed to say that because I judge it!! so don't tell anyone

Not sure about Dragging, but Right click the folder you want and copy the paste it where you want it to go.
This method works from the Wally's open Pak Folder, as I just did it.
Maybe I should have said this first time around ;)

After much thought i came to realise that nothing is random..
Posted on 20 Nov 04 03:33 by Gone_Latin
I know a lady that lived in a cave for ten years to figure that out.
Three major philosophical ideas exist on this.
1. Everything happens for a reason.
2. There is a God.
3. I control everything.

Here are a few other things you might want to ponder...

You don't exist.
The only thing that exists is the person in physical form.
The image you have of you is not shared by all the other people, since that image is in your head and bears no resemblance to the person that is you.
Decisions and choices you think you make are just that...
thoughts...
They hold no ground in reality.
The reality is that all things happen regardless of what we think.

Anonymous may well have decided to click 'post', but the reality is that his 'self' convinced him that clicking 'post' was his decision...
I suggest that he controls all his life.
His 'self' will tell him he can control some stuff, That is just the mind playing tricks on the person.. the truth is that he controls nothing.

Belief in 'self' is the single greatest chain around the persons neck.
Belief that there is no 'self' is the single most empowering realisation a person can have.

But you have to believe in something to free the mind...
Just make sure that something is not you.
Read the bio's of the worlds top 500 richest people, every single one of them has faith in something other than self.

I didn't spend ten years in a cave, no need for you to either.

They must be brilliant maps to warrant conversion...
Or are you going to convert all the maps that didn't work in the first place in the hope that the new engine will save you?

in Mapping for HL1 Post #73769
Good idea Tycell. Sequel in HL2... I like that.

There will be a need for HL1 mod's for a while yet, the main reason for that is that some people can not afford the hardware to run HL2.
Software levels were still being downloaded ... correction... 'Are' still being downloaded.

One thing still holds true...
If you design a good level, it will be downloaded.
If it is exceptionally good... it doesn't matter what platform it was made on...
The largest market for HL1 Mod's is Asia and Central Europe.
This market is LARGE... and with China coming online at an alarming rate you have two options...
1. Be 1337 and 'dis' all sub-standard technology, widoz and muppysoft.
2. Create HL1 and watch the hit counter revolve.

[Ask SlayerA where the majority of Minimicus downloads come from these day's]

My piss poor home site "built with NOF" (not in notepad cause I can't code for shit) recieves a handul of hits a day... 'about 5'... lol....
But the referer tells me that every hit is looking for Half-Life Modification and Half-Life Single Player Mod.

If you are still not convinced, then why are people still building Quake Maps??
Why is Q2 still the most active forum base around??

Thanks,
Since I really don't know the limitations of the new engine... 'except what I have read', I am reluctant to rewrite that article.
The reasoning behing this is that when I first became interested in helping people with Hammer mapping a few years ago, I was surprised how many sites continued to publish incorrect information....
In most cases, the info was leached from 'expert' sites and perpetuated itself.

A few things I do know about the HL2 engine, and that is you are still required to keep within limits...
What those limits are exactley, I am not sure... But keep an eye on Tommy14's site... Hopefully he will set everyone straight.

in Hammer 4 editing HL1 maps Post #73478
Discussion about this on VERC a while ago concluded that all the Mod teams who were going to port their old maps across to Hammer 4, would actually be wasting their time.

You need to get your head around the new object Physics, the new Materials and the way the game plays.

It would have to be some excellent brush work that took you years, before it was worth porting....(my opinion only)

Having said that... if you figure it out could you write a tutorial...
I am sure our members will give it a bash.

You could be a little more subtle...
After all, who is to say that he spent so much time building the maps that his arms were worn down to stubs and now he has to have spoons taped to his stumps just to post the map...

It is a bit hard to post screeniies when all you have is spoons.

What... you want me to sift through that stuff for reliable information because you are off to play Halo 2??

Sigh... It isn't going to happen...

PaLO is right,
I should have spotted the mistake. You can use hint's in MP maps, actually I strongly suggest it.
What you can't do is actively see the speed effect in MP mode, so you check the hints in a single player run.

in How do i make a sky!!!!!! Post #72073
The "sky" texture needs to be applied to all sides of a brush.
zooyorkbmxer has the right answer... No.

An upgrade somewhere along the line to ZHLT removed the problem associated with using sky on single faces.
Some people used it as a 'Null" texture. Very popular for a while there... before "null" came along and stole the thunder.

I am surprised that no one is using ZHLT 3.

Ok, so it is pretty safe to say that the sewer system has been the cause of the problem?
I haven't come across this before, but I suggest cutting the sewer part into a new map file and trying to work out why that effected it.

Might not be the sewer after all? It might be something to do with the textures you have chosen?

Trapt is right...
But don't get too bogged down in the detail.
With DM's it is more important to have game flow than detail, you can add that and the eye candy later...
The opposite is true for SP.
Detail is really important.

Whatever you do, DONT loose sight of the number 1 factor for a successful level.
That is:
It is fun to play !!

Ok...
Day of Defeat mapping judging from the screenies and the siite?

Problem:
They are viewable when you run the console ~ but dissapear when you return to the game/fullscreen/hud...
Answer: (sort of)
This was discussed ages ago... so long ago that I don't remember the fix.
But I do remember that with CS based map's the R_speeds will not continuously show on the screen beacuse they were never designed to.

You are stuck with checking them in the console ~ until I can remember how it was fixed, or if there actually was a fix.

For DoD stuff I have always found Nick Robbins Day of Defeat mapping to be a great source of info.

Why is that good?
Well the guy that accused me of being a bad leader said he was going to show me how to be a good leader by producing a Mod...

He was going to follow his "full page description" and get a team together. After all "How hard could it be"

Still don't know why that is the best thing that ever happened??
